I was stood at the petrol station this morning watching the numbers racing round and something dawned on me. The petrol is measured at the pump along with the cost of the fuel. After that point there is approximately 2 Metres of pipe to the tank. When you've finished pumping the petrol, what happens to the fuel already in the pipe, which you have to pay for?? This is probably the product of a twisted mind but i reckon I'm giving away a pint of fuel each trip to the pump.

BUT
presumably the pipe is full when you start - from the previous person who used it!

Unless it was me,.. who empties as much of the pipe as possible

Just always remember to gas up first thing in the morning. The temperature will be lower, thus the petrol will be thicker. As the day warms up, the petrol will expand in your tank, but you'll still use the same volume. Instant saving of cash!!

I often tip the pipe up to get the bit of petrol left in it. I had a friend who claimed to run his motorbike on 'pipe petrol' - "never paid a penny", allegedly.

Also, why fill the tank up (unless you're doing a long motorway haul)? Fill it to the brim, the car weighs more, it uses more fuel. Half-fill it for everyday use - again, ca$h $aved! (I don't know why I'm offering these tips - when I boot it in the BMW, the needle on the economy gauge plunges scarily towards the 10mpg zone! )

Unless it was me,.. who empties as much of the pipe as possible I always laughed at people (when I was working as a petrol till-tart) who picked the pipe up to try and let all the fuel run from the pipe into the tank. The pipe is pressurised with the fuel from the pump. The trigger is on the end of the pipe. Think about it! ;D

I wonder how much extra fuel is let in petrol pumps with retactable pipes?

Yes you are being ripped off Ministrone, look at the PRICE!

Prices? What's the best value? We got a friend who will make a specific 20-mile round trip to go to the cheapest petrol station in the area. What a waste! I just go to the "expensive" one up the end of the road, or the whatever's closest when the "best-stop-pretty-soonish" light comes on!

Handy hint: If you're paying cash, try and roll-over your amount by a penny - e.g if you're putting a tenners worth in, put in £10.01. 9 times out of 10 the cashier doesn't care about the hassle of you trying to find the penny and lets you off!
Over a year it'll add up and you'll be RICH! RICH I TELL YOU! MUHAHAH!*
*Well, about 50p better off anyway!

Doesn't work around here though, bearing in mind how notoriously thrifty and cheap the average Scotsman is, you'll rarely find a petrol station manager that wouldn't sack a man for losing a penny to a customer! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D It is true that we're being ripped off at the pumps, but it's Tony Blair and his pals that are doing the ripping off, not the petrol station!

Good point...although if I don't tip the nozzle at the end a bit always drips out onto the car, so it does some good at least!

Petrol prices don't affect me..... I always buy £20 worth.....
|
|
... the only injury I sustained was a bumped head when I let the seatbelt of without realizing the car was upside down and that's not really the car's fault.

Ah but if the prices were decent 20 quid of fuel would last you longer!

Funny how you never hear of an oil company going bust.......
Another way to save on fuel is make sure your engine is in good order! I increased my economy simply by cleaning out the oil trap on the Volvo. Gosh I'm tight, but it matters when Tony keeps stealing from me. Git.

I always wonder whether the pumps are accurately calibrated (yeah, sad I know... ). You could be getting more / less for your money... I had the misfortune of paying 89.9p / litre on the M1 the other week - I don't understand how prices can vary so much. OK there's ground rent to consider depending on where you are in the UK, but then I "only" paid 84p/litre in Central London - same as I do here "oop north". Something fishy's going on....

Here's something that puzzles me..... petrol is priced at XX point something pence per litre, right? So if you filled up an exactly one litre test container, as used by the trading standards people, how much would you be charged?
