As a trader giving "test drives" must be a pain but won't it get you a good reputation and spread by word of mouth, of course it might also spread that you are a soft touch for free test drives...
My worst experiences at main dealers have been at a Peugeot dealer many years(30is so attitudes have changed) ago buying a car for my wife despite explicitly telling the salesman it was for her he'd only talk to me, walked out in the end, and BMW where I remember being basically ignored.
You could always go to a dealer and be honest, at least then they don't waste time talking just let (or not) you have a test drive. Probably best not to take the **** ie.. do it on a wet day, drive through puddles, been gone for hours and pick a quiet time.
FWIW if you're thinking of a E46 I'd look at late model E36's as well they drive differently and the E36 is more of a drivers car for me, I went from a E36 328 Tourer to a E46 323 Coupe (sport suspension) and the E36 was the better drivers car.

There`s a simple answer here. Sell the capri first, and once sold THEN go test drive new cars. At least then, you`ll be in a position to buy if you see something you like. From experience, it winds me up when people book an appointment to see a car. I take the time to get the car from the unit, wash it, put fuel in and make sure it`s all ready to be seen and driven. This all takes time. Then, once they show, it`s either obvious straight away thet they`re just here for the fun, or they openly say that their have to sell their car first.
I understand you need to test drive a car first, and by no means are you obligated to buy. However, IMHO, you should be genuine and be in a position to buy. It`s wasting peoples time if not.
This is obviously just my opinion, and no doubt others will disagree. Genuinely though, if you phoned me and explained the situation, I`d be happy to let you take the car for a quick drive, when it was a good time for me. This way, i`d not need to spend time on prep, and specifically getting the car ready for a potential sale. There`s no false pretense then.
Good luck with the search.
