^ hopefully not rusty if it's an oddball car. Imagine trying to find a NOS transmission tunnel for something like a 70's Fiat? No chance, guess you'd have to grab anything you can find that's about the right size & shape from a scrapper or Bay'o'E and make it fit. Edit : just noticed you've got a MGB, not sure if you can get new tunnels for them or if you'll have to fit the nearest you can find

I'm sure I've seen MGBs and maybe Heralds converted to MX5 running gear with a sort of backbone chassis from under an MX. Or have I imagined that whole thing?

Yes that's been done a few times, however with the SVA I have not seen any recent projects in fact I measured it up when I did my conversion. However Frontline to a bolt on kit for the rear now, so how that get's around the issue I don't know. Myself I just put the Engine and box in my GT, the rest is just polybushed MGB stuff etc.

What about additions to body shells? Wide body kits e.c.t?

Heralds do have a separate chassis and so just come under the '8 points rule'
MGB's would also come under this rule UNTIL you alter any structural part of the monocoque. If any conversion parts fitted simply bolt on to original mounting points, then no issue.
If the wings are bolt on, then there's no real issue regarding arch kits etc afaik
