Hi folks, I've been looking at lowering springs for a long time, now would be a good time to do it but I've lost most of the handy links I had stored on the PC (even the RR thread link to Seths build ) The height in the pics below is about right but the springs are too soft (old age? ) Questions :
Some modern springs are a direct fit - any suggestions what Car/Model/Spec/Drop for my build ? Where to buy? Does anyone have a set going spare ? (unused? from your last upgrade?) I'm looking for :New (good used?) front coil springs, pair. Lowered (about 2" from stock if possible) Uprated for "fast road" use (any ideas poundage is standard / fast road ? ) *not* coilovers Supercheap thanks
All help appreciated, just so you know what it's for...

I fitted mk3 2.0 Capri springs in mine. They are about 2 inches shorter than hillman ones (which means they rattle around at full droop) but sit in the spring mounts perfectly with load on them . I also went for slightly stiffer , -1 inch lowering springs. I think there's some pictures on my thread, but I need to sort the dampers out next!

Too many projects, not enough time.

I chopped 1 full coil out of the original springs and it sat it the same height with the capri ones if my memory serves me right!

Reference measurements for the benefit of future Hunter / Rootes Arrow owners (or me just in case I forget ) all measurements in proper units - inches Hunter front struts / springsSpring cups suit springs with outside diameter 5.25" Spring inside diameter 4.5" Strut length when extended 10" between top & bottom cups Capri spring measurements(spec believed to be 190lb, -2" drop) diameter 5.25" outside - so suits Hunter struts spring free length 8" (so will fit but will rattle loose at full extension) thoughts -Capri 190lb -2" drop looks to be too short on the bench so -1 drop *might* be direct swap/upgrade for Hunters, if anyone any other / better idea, feel free to share Thanks for the help (and especially to dezcapri for sorting out some Capri springs for me to measure up) credit to Hillmanjames for the pic

For info : Capri springs fit, they work, and ride height is same exactly same as it was before (low!) If anyone wants a low-down Hunter, try 190lb springs (8" free length) from a Capri Mk2 2.0 I'm now looking for some 300lb (maybe 275lb) springs to see if that will reduce the body roll even further (any links or leads would be welcome ) * Estates are big n heavy, 190lb springs could be fine for a saloon.

Measurements for Hunter owners / anyone curious... Strut height (gap from bottom spring cup to top spring cup, standard shocks fitted with 190lb -2" springs) Normal ride height, gap is 12cm Strut part-extended but spring seated in the cups, gap 18cm Full strut extension, gap 22cm So the springs can fall out 4cm before full extension, unless wired/clipped/welded/superglued into their seats

Bumping this for any new readers / new ideas (I'd like to get something sorted in the next couple of weeks before things get hectic here) Does anyone know where I can get uprated Capri front springs (300lb would be ideal, best I can find is 220lb from Rally Design which are not a lot stiffer than what I already have). Have been told Sierra fronts are the same diameter - does anyone have a set they could measure for me?? Super-cheap if possble so no custom made spings etc. Usual terms apply - I can offer public thanks, RR brownie points, virtual beer etc as a reward for helpful info

I've seen custom springs somewhere made to whatever rate you want for about £28 each.
I've just won a set of rear leafs for Hillman James's old whip. Can't wait to see the difference old ones are absolutely level when viewed!

Can't wait to see the difference old ones are absolutely level when viewed! If that's for front coil springs, any idea who was selling? Any plans for a build thread? Link pls ps. That could explain why he didn't reply to my last pm - wanna buy a spare set of doors / quad lights etc? See my latest for-sale ad I found out you could get different number of leaves on Hunter springs for Saloon/Estate/Heavy-Duty (maybe 3/4/5 leaves)? For anyone else thinking of Hunter rear leaf springs, these might be interesting retrorides.proboards.com/thread/187313/leaf-springs and retrorides.proboards.com/thread/169274/spring-dimensions-cheap-north-source

Found that link was a couple of years ago I was looking but prices start at £24 each. They can do any length you want though obviously more coil is more cash.
D Faulkner springs LLP, they have escort springs listed in 300 lbs rating you wanted at £34.80 + vat and carriage.
Will do a build thread when welding begins!
Saw your for sales ad but I have decent doors, got a pair of nos sills to fit.
Here's some spring rates from genuine Hillman Hunter workshop manual. When pics finally upload.

hi I know this is an old thread but looking for a few hints, I have a singer vogue (new vogue) basically a Hillman hunter. I have a turbo diesel in from a ford sierra obviously the front spring are poo and can`t hake the extra weight, done all the measuring as you guys have above , but my question is on the vogue both upper and lower front spring mounts are flat and standard singer springs are closed and ground springs top and bottom is the Cortina and capri the same or are the springs a tangent end

hi I know this is an old thread but looking for a few hints... Hi, most of the Hunter stuff I've found / worked out is in the link below, including front spring options I've also been told that a Capri front end can be made to fit - complete with rack & pinion... forum.retro-rides.org/thread/196874/tech-notes-hunter-mods-daily?page=1&scrollTo=2308679For uprated front springs, I found 220lbs springs off the shelf (Rally design?), as far as I know anything above that needs custom springs (see above) or coil-over conversion. Start a build thread and let folk know what you have, a TD-Hunter/Vogue sounds like a fun toy
