So ...
I have cleared a few things out to sell on ebay recently , and juts want to know if anyone else has encountered a bigger group of nutters than prospective mk1 escort buyers ?
I have had no end of grief on there from them , starting within 10 minutes of the auction . Being bombarded with ' whats your buy it now mate ?' ' how much cash now m8te ?' etc etc .
And then when i say i will let the auction run i get told it wont go for much anyway and its my loss . Thats mild compared to some of it .
Why do bits for these cars provoke such bidding anger, fury and feeling that people will take peanuts for something that will go for a lot ?
I totally do not understand why people get there knickers in a twist so much .
Is it like this for VW bits , another strong , fanatical scene ?

Sadly, you've pretty much described any sought after item on eBay, or just eBay full stop. Some of the 'vintage' Tamiya crowd won't take no for an answer and play it all coy: "Well, I don't know how much it's worth" when they clearly have a figure in mind. It gets tedious- quickly. I'm using it less and less as a selling resource now, there's too much scope for buyers to take the wee and cock sellers around. eBay knows it's too big to take on and placate the former because it the final sale fees make it a truck load of money.

Yeah, I know what you mean mate... I've got a few old Fords, but I've given up on the Ford scene. I've had no end of nutters trying to buy my Mk1, and others, and when you tell 'em they aren't for sale they get stroppy and abusive. One guy had the temerity to tell me that I had no right to decline his offer to buy my Escort as he'd offered what he considered the cars worth and added £500!!! Apart from the fact I felt his offer was actually less than the true value, I plainly stated that the car was not for sale under any circumstances, at which point he told me that I couldn't state that as fact, and that if he so wished he could force me to sell to him!! At which point I told him to sling his hook, before I removed him from my premises!!! I think other 'scenes' are victims of the same kind of behaviour, but I haven't experienced them personally...

The ford scene is crazy now, I can't be bothered with it anymore, I've owned hundreds of fords since I was 15 years old,, but I find the prices being paid now just ridiculous, I recently paid £750 for a jaguar xj8, a car in my opinion a far better car than any rotten tarted up mk1 escort for stupid money....personally I much prefer other makes now the ford scene has gone for me

You must never confuse a hobby with a business. I suspect that much of the dealings in Ford parts is done by people out to make money which, lets face it, they will because the Ford scene has become an uncontrollable monster. It may also demonstrate why so many Escrotes are going missing, there will be plenty of people out there who wont be too picky making money from stolen parts and the like. A bit tragic really.

I sold some old bits , curse word really , and the chap was selling loads of stuff himself . I was into my old bikes for a bit , truimphs etc , and it was the same with them .
I think its older blokes buying bits then re selling them for £5-10 more each time for pocket money .
You could not buy any truimph part complete , everything was broken down to nuts and bolts , each for sale for £10 , so if you bought a engines worth it would cost you £2000 for a pile of worn junk !

The Ford scene is alright minus the scummy (thieving, cloning, etc) side, there's a good reason the cars and parts are so sought after. There'll be people that let it down just like in any other car circle though. If you can filter through the timewasters etc you'll get a good result, the guy that came to buy the orange Mk2 here was no nonsense and they're generally not too bad.

Unfortunately it's the same with any scene where cars/parts become really desirable, i have had no end of idiots trying to buy my cars, i have found the best nice at first them when they get arsey show my force of character, they soon get the message and do one, it's a shame everyone gets tarred with the same brush though because I've met many many more nice, honest people in my time

I've had a myriad of old Fords in the past but now I really couldn't entertain the idea...
I love old Fords as that's where my love for old cars came from...
However, it seems that the 'scene' is destroying things for people that only have money that is of the realistic amount (just like me!!!)...
If the value isn't high for restoration (that gets my vote) or profit reasons then the value is high for banger-racing reasons...!!! It's just so wrong but that's just what the market is doing...
I wanted to buy a 3.0S Capri for so long and about 3 years ago I had the chance to buy a rough but solid example for about £3k and I stupidly walked away (caution can be a killer)...!!! Today a similar example would be double that amount and maybe a tad more...!!!
With regards to the Mk1 Escort things are just getting beyond silly... The prices for a mundane motor (and I am comparing this to contemporary saloons!) are beyond ridiculous yet they still find owners...
I don't know how this will end but the rise of classic Ford prices is not going to end in the near-future by the looks of things...
I wish I could afford an old Ford now but it seems like they're just a little out of reach for me so I have to make do with the memories I have of them when I could still afford them and I wasn't afraid to use them and leave them in a public place...!
One day though, one day...

Actually The Sierra is the only one I drove recently that I still thought was half decent and most people hate those!

My mk1 escort was my first ford and brought it just before the "Scene" took off. I brought it as a retro ride which i could use as a daily drive and enjoy.
Now i can't take it anywhere without someone offering to buy it and to scared to leave it parked anywhere in public. Its taken the fun out of owning it. Its such a shame as its such a fun car to drive but i can't afford all the little bits and pieces now to keep it going because of the rediculous prices.
I'm considering selling it now just so i can be gone with the stress of all the idiots who want to buy it or nick it.

Well I can say Morris Minor people are a strange bunch, having sold one for a friend... I completely agree and half of them don't want to spend more than 2 pence on a part. Consequently new repro spares are total rubbish

It's the same with Land Rovers. 18 months ago I was looking to buy a defender 90 or 110, it was unreal what people wanted for a tea bag of a car. The landy magazines don't help either. They write about the Defender amourgedon that's coming in October and how prices will soar. I still want one but will have to save some serious cash to get one. I looked for alternatives of which there isn't. But in the end I got a Frontera of all things. The best bit is that I know it will still be there when I get back.

Good point made there - how about the normal people that just own and drive these cars and need to buy parts for maintenance/repair etc? How are they meant to do that when parts go for such silly money?
I'm into old Fords, love the things, have owned many and I'm sure will do so again, but some of the prices are absolute madness. Have you seen how much a Saph Cossie fetches these days?! Even people in the Ford scene think its bonkers!
I'll never forget way, way back in the day when my old man had the chance to buy tidy a Brooklands Capri for £350 when you could barely give them away and he had to pass it up. We literally had zero money back then - but it still hurts! What would that be worth now, 10-15 grand?

I have to admit I have done the "how much do you have the car advertised for" etc but only if the seller has added "car for sale elsewhere so may remove at anytime" in the listing.
Strangely though 9 times out of 10 I get the reply "make me an offer" wtf?!? If you have the car advertised elsewhere then you must know what you want for it?

Ford Scene....full of utter numpties! I got sick of the usual stupid questions when selling the Laser Capri that I just didnt bother answering them. I'm never going to sell the 2.8 so hopefully I wont get the same questions again, you don't get any of that rubbish selling the "Flat Cappers" favorite MG :-).
