So it all started when I decided that I wanted to build an overland camper to go of into the great unknown, after much looking I decided that I wanted an L300 Delica as it seemed to be the best base for a camper for a family of 4 but also having 4x4 ability for the out of the way places I wanted to go. Did not want an L400 as I wanted a mechanical base with little to no ECU's. So to start I got this one from this forum. I got it as it was a manual so a bit better on fuel and a bit better cruser on long trips. The owner said it was a little rusty and it had been down the side of his house for 3 years. Turns out he must have been a light house keeper as the Delica that turned up at my house was very rusty and a bit slimy. Although it was a lot more rusty than I thought it was going to be the last owner had warned me and I was still happy as I know if worst can to it I could strip it and get money back and the price was more than fair. Front arch drivers side All the arches look like this Under sliding door, drivers side sill is even worse As I want to take the Delica to Romania in August I decided that this was not the vehicle to go in as I would never get the welding done in time let alone the camper conversion so I had to look for another one.

So on to Part 2, while looking on Facebook I stumbled across another Delica L300 for sale this time an auto. It looked good but did not have an MOT. So I made an offer and it was accepted. This time I wanted to see it have a look before handing over cash so instead of sending a transport company to get it I decided to go and get it myself. So I hooked up the trailer to the trusty old transit and set of from Deryshire to Bristol. When I turned onto the street I was greeted by quite a nice almost shiny Delica, which was nice. After fitting a pair of new batteries it fired up and after a quick look round it seemed solid so we loaded it up on the trailer and headed home. Once home a quick check over to see if everything was as good as it looked and it seemed to be, It did smell a lot of dog though as the last owner had five of them. I changed a few bulbs and wipers and put it in for an MOT, which it passed. Then of for a wash and valet to get rid of the smell inside First real test drive was to a friend of mine for a meeting, 50 miles with some traffic All went very well made it in one piece. as leaving got to the fuel station, filled up and noticed a lot of water under it, quick trip back 400yrds to mates house to look at it and water pump failure Que ride home on the big yellow taxi. So water pump ordered and fitted yesterday Start of work old pump out New pump in Job was not as bad as I thought it was going to be, having a mate help was also good it took about 4 hours start to finish and water pump and stat was £43 from Euro car parts. So tested it going to Limes café meet 50 mile round trip and everything worked great Home safe So that is my Delica adventure so far first one I got just before xmas and green one I have had 8 weeks

Well I decided the Delica was looking a little low so I decided to lift it a bit Start of the day it looked like this Not bad but not that high so I cranked the front bars to give a 55mm lift, I will reclock the passenger side on when I have a bit more time. The I had a disaster when it came to the rear, I had ordered a 6mm lift block kit for a Jeep Cherokee as I had used one on my own jeep I knew it could be made to fit and the u bolts would be the right size. Well when I opened the box the u bolts were missing. that did not help with progress. As luck would have it Bruce (aka mystery machine) had a set of 4 left from his Delica days which meant a 300mile round trip to Bristol from Derbyshire and back. Once we got back it was starting to go dark so no pictures. I still have to adjust the rear brake line bracket to give more slack but I decided to call it a day at 11 oclock as I was now tired and cold. End of play a 11 oclock This is how it now looks in day light on 31 10.5 15 Mickey Thompson mud and snow tyre shod Pajero rims The blocks on the rear Then went out in her for a Peak 4x4 Off road assessment day, I have already done the assessment but am going to help out and a mate of mine was going in my Jeep for his assessment so should be a good day.

Well this is were it starts getting silly, I went out for a brief drive to Glasgow 285miles each way today. I parked up in a water sports center for no more than 30min, I came out from the office were I had a coffee and this happened  It was a long day left the house at 3:40am and drive for 5 hours 20min none stop. The transit did what it has always done for the last 9 1/2 years I have owned it (performed like a champ) loaded pulled like a train due to its bit of tuning  then a fuel fill up and 5:40 backnone stop and still back in time to unload, return the trainer and go to my sons parents evening. Not a bad days work. Home safe and meeting its lifted stable mate It needs bumpers and some glass which I have on the rusty one and some trim and stuff for the ignition. She is very solid, almost rust free but drivers rear quarter is a bit rippled. And that's my Delica adventures up to date so far.

Good luck with the build. I have an l300 van that I converted to a camper (it's on this forum somewhere! ). If you break the other up I maybe interested in any trim to upgrade my interior as the van is very basic in the cab area !

I'm after door trims / electric front window set up. N/s drop glass. And thats what I can think of for now. Yes my van was broken in gently when it was finished. Ive had a couple more holidays in it and was great fun. Now the lighter nights are on the way I plan to finish off the little bits I didn't manage last year. ..

Well I had 3 days off work so decided to do some work to Delica number 2 as I still need to turn it into a camper. So spare wheel carrier needed making as I wanted to spares and room for batteries were the spare normally goes. so this is what was made. Without wheels With wheels on Hinges, mounted into lock nuts on the inside of the body, that bit was a pain as the lower section was double skinned. Retaining bracket, will have a lock fitted And cut out to let the rear wiper still work That took all of the first day. did not think it would have taken that long but still I am happy with the result.

So second day and the real work started. I had picked up this the week end before. Its off a Mazda bongo. Just so you know if you are thinking of fitting one of these to you Delica L300 it is 9cm wider than your gutter so is a real pain to fit, high roofs like mine are even thinner at the top of the roof. Having found that the new roof was to wide we started cutting the Delica to bits, very scary this bit. All the roof glass smashed. The roof was quite rusty. So we had to start making a frame to support the new roof with the frame made and braced to make to very strong it was time to put the Bongo roof on so all the pop top mounting points were in the right place Welding of the roof started but was not finished as time was pressing on so workshop doors were shut for the night

So that brings us onto today. Finished welding on the Bongo roof was the first job. When that was finished it was time to close of the ends of the rame and shape/blend the front. When this was done it was time to re attach the Pop top and see if it still worked, no photos of this part as it took 3 people to man handle it, we also put a small 25mm rip in the canvas at this point which is a bit of a pain but it can be patched. Roof fitted and up And down Next job was to weld on some brackets for the awning to be bolted to. Paint all the new steel and bolt the awning on. Not photos of the brackets but the awning fits. here it is up, I also have sides for it Inside, needs the roof lining out of the first Delica I got so we can trim it out and make it look nice I am very happy with the result, I need to fill and blend to metal work a bit over the next week or so ready for a final pain, After a mad three days I am now done in and ready for a sit down and relax.

I like what you're doing with this. Keeping everything compact too. What sort of awning is that and did it come complete with the sides that you mention? When it's all together do you have a particular destination in mind? You mention ' into the great unknown.' Sounds interesting!

The awning is from tuff trek online and it comes with or without sides, I also went for the ground sheet as well. I want to take it to Iceland next year and out into Europe this year latter on, also fancy eastern Europe in the future as well

No mate it was a pain in the rear end and not a job I ever want to do again. If you want to come and have a look how it was done though you are welcome to pop over.
You are also welcome to come along next time we go on a few green lanes.
