Oil wise it will be Shell Helix R which is M approved (and i have a 80 litre drum of it!) If it's good enough for M by M than I guess you'll be fine Good luck with the rebuild, the car's worth it! Well, fingers crossed it will keep it nice and smooth! To be honest the engine actually pulls really well but i figure while its out.... in essence i am putting in a new set of OE pistons and rings, the valve springs and buckets from and S50B32, late spec cams new BMW head gasket ACL race shells and ARPs on the bottom along with two additional oil baffles. Hopefully that should future proof it and free up a touch more go.

k so quick update on progress. Bought lots of stuff from bmw (all the usual clips washers and other plums) Completely stripped out the car with the exception of the loom and column to fully assess the work required. Interior has been fully re-trimmed in black nappa with a pale blue stitch (will get some pics of that) and had heated seat mats added (all the original cloth has been retained, not decided if i will sell it as a kit or keep it with the car). New Cecotto front chin spoiler and all fixings has been purchased (genuine) Most of the required bods steel repair panels have been purchased (genuine) A GRP evo adjutable rear spoiler (i just couldn't find a decent second hand one and couldn't stomach the cost of a new one from bmw) So on with the gore. Passenger foot well, essentially pretty ruined (liquid is a mug of spilt tea) will need work in addition to the repair plates sadly. Driver side footwell, moderate ruination here but will be easily resolved with the repair plates Drivers side wheel house, yep, could drain some pasta through that. Under the abs pump, not bad actually, just needs a good clean, prime and paint. I had bought the panels to replace all this as i assumed it would be rubber ducked. The other side however, got stuck into, again all original bmw panels to repair (these are just there for test fitting and not welded right now) Fortunately the speakers have been collecting the rust from the footwells = zero hoovering

Wow, you are making quite an impact, will be a great car once you have been through it. I know it won't be at the front of your mind now but back to the pads, have you ever used Pagid Blues. Best I have ever used, even if they aren't cheap.

To be honest, no, i have always used Ferodo 2500's / 3000's or EBC yellow / blue with the occasional Mintex 1144 or 1155 and been happy with the performance, but i do know that Pagid are consistently recommended, the Group N spec pad for this car is a Pagid compound, so may see if i can put an order in for some!

Haha, I had to ask!
That E36 also looks like fun, guessing a 3.0 M3?

Well, some more parts taken off (i am doing all the disassembly and removing most of the curse word to help in keeping the costs reasonable (ish) So off with the front legs, passenger door, underbody heatsheilds etc) However, stuff is starting to get repaired, and properly too (hope this goes without saying) So for those of you with short memory spans, spot the difference. last update: This update Wherever a repair panel is not available from BMW it has to be made, however these are all properly made with the correct gauge steel and then butt welded with allthe correct shaping and swaging so one all the weld are ground down the repair should be completely invisible. Nice to see things kicking along! Still some time before its out setting fire to the hedge rows again though

I wish I had the time and money to do something with mine, its only a 328 but has been sat for almost 4 yrs after its started to use a lot of oil and compression on cylinder 2 is down to 120 and the other 5 were at 155-160, so I have presumed Nikasil bore failure. I don't want to sell it so it just sits waiting, can see it being muck longer though!

Can't claim any great progress on mine in the last 12 months if i am really honest, the e30 has kind of taken over, but once that is done well i will have it done in no time, well next to no time, or at least in the next few years, probably.

So it was time to tackle the really grotty bit, the passenger footwell. All the other ropy area's pale into insignificance in comparison to this bodged up rotten pile of patchwork. As such there was only one way to make this right, chop the fuckers out. So Obviously lots more to get axed, and a complete new genuine battery tray section to go in also. In other news, some parts: Ran a tap through all the mountings to get a feel for the size of my erect flap :smt110 Genuine evo chin Started work on getting the airbox nailed, i have a spare set of s14 throttles to mock up on, so the flange will be marked up in engineers blue to get the port matching right, at the moment some of the ports are slightly occluded. For now, that is all.

Loving the C/F inlet! very cool... no pun intended Yea, i know, it brings me out in a cold sweat every time i think about it. Inlet will probably need to take a bit of a back seat for a little while as i will need to fit a piggyback to get any benefit so in a rare moment of clarity i figured that concentrating on getting it solid and in one piece should be the priority!

This is a great write up and also a great car. I had to laugh at your comment ( not before i had indicated to every chav and dickhead in a 200 mile radius of Birmingham that i wanted a drag race) that made my day Thanks

If your ever feeling board driving through Brum, just flick your headlamps randomly and some traveller heap will be death rattling up your backside in no time So all the passenger side is buttoned up, chasing the rust has just gone on and on which has ended up with most of the passenger footwell being fabricated. Most of the plates are edge to edge welded so once the welds are ground down it will be a seamless repair. Complete new battery tray going in. All rot is gone leading to having to make us some additional repair sections, again these will be ground down for a seamless finish. bit more to be done on the outside to get the correct shape and finish a few seam welds before grinding them down. Just to give a bit of an idea on the welding done

Right, well, where to start again  Just keep on finding things, and the reality is that having come this far i am not going to leave anything undone in terms of rust. So i have stripped out the complete loom, brake servo, pedal box, and all the hydraulic lines, both front arches have been scoured down to the metal (that was not even slightly fun, burning bitumen flting all over the place and pretty much smoked out Daves unit) for repair and will then be coated in Raptor Bed Liner with other impact area's getting a few coats of Gravitex. The sills have been repaired, the floors on both sides ave been repaired, the bulkhead has been fixed all the inner wing sections have been repaired, new front bumper mounts. Still to do, few more bits of welding, braze and weld the front scuttle grind down all the welds, seam sealer, abrasion protection, repair one of the wings, undercoat, paint, paint all the new bits and then i have to put the curse word back together (if i can still remember where all the bits go  )

Flippin' heck, good work!!
Looks pretty intense but there's nothing better than knowing the car inside out. Will have to bite the bullet and start the process on my Capri next winter, rather dreading that...
