My mum had one of these in beige, well saying that my dad bought it for her, but ended up using it more for himself when ever his mini/passat/escort/volvo/orion wasn't working back when they could be had 10 a penny.

Yeah had a beige one myself, paid 45 quid ran it for a couple of years . Used to thrash it from Chichester to mid Wales and back fairly often. No problems with it really apart from my starving it of oil then it was off to the scrapyard. Think I've owned around eight of these little cars over the years - cheap as chips motoring

Its going to be a busy weekend ! 998 was slowly dying so hoofed it out in favour of 1275 which I believe has been mildly breathed on - came to me in this rather lovely clean state and the guy that sold it to me is coming up on sunday night to get it started and tuned (with luck). Excited ! Metro unit, HIF44 with Ramair filter, lcb and stainless exhaust which I fear will be stupidly loud and large ..

Used to run Minis years ago, have to say having this one is great, even more fun soon I hope.
Even though this is a standard looking car apart from a few retro touches I can't believe the reaction it gets out on the street.
Oh and this is my wifes car ..

progress just rad and a few other bits to finish off guy who sold me the engine couldn't make it down tonight to help get her running and tuned up, had a busy day winning races in his grasstrack mini. coming over one night in week to hopefully fire her up, can't wait! Should sound 'interesting' with single box exhaust and air filter ..

Fired her up today!
Not too loud but pretty gruff sounding, lumpy at idle which I'm hoping is down to a hairy cam ..
Been held up a bit waiting for a few parts, now only rad and cooling system bits to fit, so I'm hoping tomorrow is road test day - yeeha!
no doubt a few teething problems will pop up, hopefully it will run pretty well

After some fettling she's running very well. Huge difference in performance which is fun, air filter pretty noisy but single box exhaust quieter than expected. Sounds rorty on full song Not yet perfect but on the whole really chuffed. People seem to love this car for some reason, lots of appreciative looks from bystanders. Main thing is it makes people smile

Didn't get around to making that video yet, here's why - was getting puffs of blue smoke so time to investigate Bores look good and compression when checked pre disassembly 175, 155, 155, 160 Happy it's turned out to be the Big valve unleaded head (mg metro) now being reconditioned Will post up engine noise when up and running, should have std cooper alloys and maybe an MX5 seat fitted for lanky driver - picked up seat off ebay for a measly £1.24

Cheers for the tips Being told on the mini forum that compression is poor, not happy

If the bores are not worn it could well be just the valves and guides paticularly if your puffs of smoke were after a closed throttle overun.

If the valves aren't seating properly you won't have decent compressions, those figures don't seem too bad to me but then again mini's aren't my thing

great little project you have going here...for some reason that color may be to blame for its popularity...not sure why, but its endearing...
175 does not sound too low for compression...what should it be, 190?
maybe the valves and or timing werent perfect and had something to do with the compression?
best of luck with it...
