Yay Nikko. Very pretty area to ride/drive through.
If the person is wealthy enough to buy the Elgrand, then they should be wealthy enough to go touring in it.

Not as much progress today as it was mainly measuring and checking for space. Trying to hold a speaker with a massive magnet next to a metal door is a challenge too! A bit frustrating that the window mechanism is about an inch too low to seat the 10" midbass below it so I'll just need to build further out to house it, still enough room to do that though so all fine. More importantly the door structure is completely flat so I can just bolt on layered pieces of MDF of the relevant shape without worrying about spaces to backfill etc. Standard paper speaker removed...

The only thing about Nikko is it's a tourist area, so prices are a little higher than normal (not stupidly so though). To walk to Kegon falls is free. To get up close and personal, requires you to buy an elevator ticket. Lake Chuzenji is quite nice as well. But if you hire a motorbike and go up the Romance Highway ring road, my goodness that's nice. Corner, Straight, Corner, Corner, Straight, Tunnel. You get the idea. Best road I found was actually about 25-40 north of Nikko. I'll shut up now..

A bit more progress today, slightly out of planned sequence as I could work on the door cards in the garden with the occasional trip to the bus for a test fit rather than spending the whole time in the bus that the deadening floor prep would require. First of all I split the two halves of the oem door card by drilling out the plastic welded poppers. I went a bit too far with the first hole. Oops, good job I won't need to use them... I measured the depth of the standard door card - good to know that my new one won't be any deeper than the standard... Should be okay for the 10" midbass BlackDeath Pro 10W woofer... The initial rough shape was gained by drawing around the standard door card section... First of many trial fits... Contoured a bit more ... Refitted the standard top half of the door card so i could test the height of my template too. Yeah more trial fitting... Final shape of the layer 1 in cardboard, each layer will have a slightly different shape at the top edge to cover the lower edge of the top section where it was previously fixed to the standard lower section... Next plan for the door cards is too cut layer 1 out in 12mm MDF (it will be thinner than the remaining layers so that layer 2 will sit tighter to the top section along that joining edge.

More boring but essential prep work on today's lunch break... I removed the armrest (12mm head bolt hidden behind a zip off cover) to give more clearance for the sub box between the seats / the box will act as an arm rest once installed any way... And I went over the floor with a scraper to remove the stubborn floor foam... Next job ... vac and scrub clean the floor ready to apply deadening sheets

I know I promised vacuuming photos and scrubbing next but I decided it made sense to route cables first so I didn't inadvertently cover required holes / cable channels with deadening sheets. So behold photos of holes and cables poking through them... A cable... a 0 gauge one at that and just about long enough... A hole... underneath the underlay just above and to the right of the accelerator pedal... A cable... threaded through the hole. Originally I couldn't find where it was in the engine bay but after leaning a torch agains the hole in the footwell I could see the source of the light in the engine bay and reached for the cable behind the fuse box and out it came... Routed around where it needs to go, covered in convoluted tubing to match the standard cables, the end taped up for now and strapped to oem cables... Back inside the bus, I removed the under floor cubby so that the cable could run underneath it... I routed the cable through and strapped it in various places, I need an extra tie for this area, down under the cubby... Back up out the cubby and through the B pillar trim mount... This is where I'll route the power cable across to the amp rack in the middle, it's nice and safe here as it's between the two seats so know risk of the seats or rails interfering. It's also where the front carpet joins the rear carpet so access should be easy enough. I haven't decided whether to locate the fused distribution block here or extend with a one to one fuse holder and locate the distribution block on the amp rack itself... The cubby refitted... With the power sorted it was onto the cables from the head unit which were routed through a couple of different channels underneath the centre console ... These are for front end amp, sub amp, 3.5mm video/audio input into H/U, phono video output from the H/U into the oem overhead screen inputs, amp remote cable, and H/U "handbrake" cable to tell it when certain settings functions and the DVD can safely be used.... Obviously they'll all be cable tied and P clipped accordingly once the deadening is down. As I moved my bus back in place there was a lovely cover of Heathens by Billie Martin on so I took a photo to remind me to get a copy and play it when I have proper sounds. Another step closer ...

So the deadening has started - the first thing I've actually added as part of the build rather than just taking away. This is the first time I've used the vibe sound deadening and I'm impressed so far. It's easier to cut / just with a pair of SPAM MESSAGE PLEASE REPORT scissors / than dynamat xtreme and it's cleaner to use than non-foil backed deadening I've used in the past too. The sheets are a nice size - a bit bigger than A4 paper so you can work out what cuts need to be made as you apply each sheet and it's a nice size to handle without it dropping in the wrong place as you place it down and stretch it into place. I heated each sheet under the footwell heater for a while as I applied the previously heated sheet which makes the adhesive stickier and the sheet more mouldable as it's pressed down into place. This is just what I had chance to lay in half an hour but I'll take a photo after I've applied a single box of the bulk pack so you can see the coverage - I'll apply two layers directly underneath and the areas surrounding the sub with a plan to single layer the whole floor and then a similar method for the doors (single layer all over with double or triple layer directly behind the speakers)

Cheers oukie and sb glad to see people are still reading - I don't think there's much interest in stereos on here which is fair enough As for the spam filter that's made me smile. I was describing my scissors as not expensive and just from a room in the house where you do your cooking!

More of the same today, getting into more of a routine now - two lots of sheets warming through nicely under the driver and passenger footwell heaters on 32 degrees... Had to go around a few captive nuts and cables so cut in situ with a Stanley blade... About a third of the floor done so far... I've got another hour and a bit spare to do some more tonight.

I am finding this to be interesting and informative, even though I doubt I'll ever install a stereo in my car, and I might even have a go at fitting sound deadening now that you've taken the trouble to show how it's done to a good standard.

Hell yeah, 0-gauge wire. Memories of being 18/19 and stuffing 0-gauge through holes in cars.. mind 90s Fiesta have plenty. Usually by torchlight at 10pm. Keep going
