Re the tar, depends what Avgas you're using. Naphtha based ie Jet B & the smells not too bad, Kero based ie Jet A & it reeks. Whatever you use make sure you're well ventilated, no egg sucking lessons here, but I work in a kero plant & the stench of it in close quarters makes me want to hurl. Note to myself, good career choice ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)

Completely forgot to get some though. I'll just have to get more thinners. It seemed to eat my gloves quicker than avtur anyway. That or grind whats left away

I have gas!(snigger) Only got it midday today though so not much welding has occurred I'm still chasing the rust back but I think or hope I've hit solid metal The inner arch has had to come off and a lot of filler has come off around the arch strengthening panel. Originally this is where the rear shock mounted. This as torn off like they all do and has an MOT looking patch covering half of it. It looks like it's been put on with an oxy acetelene welder and I'm pretty sure its hiding the rusty remains of original steel underneath. It's coming out. New panel ordered ![](http://i376.photobucket.com/albums/oo205/Ivan_Brennan/DSC_0250_zpsih6adsmc.jpg) Until that gets here I want to sort the rear of the inner wing. Cue more rot chasing ![](http://i376.photobucket.com/albums/oo205/Ivan_Brennan/DSC_0251_zpsxzzwdazl.jpg) And new steel. ![](http://i376.photobucket.com/albums/oo205/Ivan_Brennan/DSC_0252_zpsluxl76gk.jpg) Looks like I'm going to be chasing the rot all round the wheel tub Might get some more done tomorrow. Depends on what her indoors has planned for me There's always bloody something....

Well i my self always have that nagging feeling with cars that something i have not investigated is festering away/about to go pop etc so you will know its not going to unexpectedly fail a mot or burst out in rust scabs !

Cars from this age are definitely prone to it regardless of the manufacturer. Plenty of rust traps, unpainted bits and the age of it. This one is 44 years old now so its not doing badly really

Managed a small amount today in between the rain. Really struggling with the weather at the moment ![](http://i376.photobucket.com/albums/oo205/Ivan_Brennan/DSC_0265_zps0gfz7smi.jpg) So thats the boot solid again. Now onto the inner wheel arch ![](http://i376.photobucket.com/albums/oo205/Ivan_Brennan/DSC_0266_zps48jfsrvh.jpg) ![](http://i376.photobucket.com/albums/oo205/Ivan_Brennan/DSC_0268_zpsbjjmfvmf.jpg) And thats as far as the weather let me go unfortunately. Hopefully it stays dry tomorrow as I could do with letting the car and cover dry Why has the summer gone?

Its been a while since my last update. My phone oil soaked, weld splattered phone decided it had enough so I haven't been able to take any pics. So last update I was chasing rust around the inner wheel tub. I would have definitely been better off replacing it. It would have been a lot quicker and easier. Anyway. Most of the area mating the inner wheel arch to the floor got replaced along with what was left of the metal festering under a couple of big MOT patches inside and out where the original shock mount would have been(GT6 rust trap). An awkward compound curved panel it wasn't easy to make and its a bit wobbly as you can see from the inside picture. After that a reinforcement panel went on and then a new lower seat belt mounting point for inertia reel seat belts. ![](http://i376.photobucket.com/albums/oo205/Ivan_Brennan/20170122_143638_zpsqucylsu5.jpg) ![](http://i376.photobucket.com/albums/oo205/Ivan_Brennan/20170122_143616_zpslp5thak6.jpg) Next up was to recreate the mounting point for these brackets in the boot. they're fairly thick so I presume there some sort of crash protection? Originally they'd bolt to the bumper. Managed to get all the tar out eventually with a heat gun and rag. Just needs seam sealer now. ![](http://i376.photobucket.com/albums/oo205/Ivan_Brennan/20170122_143625_zpsk7yet2lh.jpg) That done, on to the other side which I thought was in better nick MOT patch on inner arch ![](http://i376.photobucket.com/albums/oo205/Ivan_Brennan/20170122_143653_zpslk4jawms.jpg) Hole ![](http://i376.photobucket.com/albums/oo205/Ivan_Brennan/20170122_143705_zpsgb0znr6x.jpg) Hole ![](http://i376.photobucket.com/albums/oo205/Ivan_Brennan/20170122_143713_zpswhxszdfj.jpg) So having established that I got on with removing the wing, which I was able to mostly pull off by hand. This blokes welding is horrendous. And surprise surprise another tacked on inner wing repair ![](http://i376.photobucket.com/albums/oo205/Ivan_Brennan/20170122_143724_zpsk7smyztu.jpg) And worse than that there's this outer wheel arch which I'm removing with nothing more than a screwdriver. It may as well be blu-tacked on. This outer wheel arch is actually part of the inner wing pressing so this repair panel should be seam welded to the inner wing AND spot welded to the inner arch tub. Essentially this is just floating there. ![](http://i376.photobucket.com/albums/oo205/Ivan_Brennan/20170122_143731_zpslkjfg4r5.jpg) Some more zero penetration pigeon wibblepoo welding to the rear of the sill ![](http://i376.photobucket.com/albums/oo205/Ivan_Brennan/20170122_143741_zps8j0egxvy.jpg) On the subject of sills, I could never get the drivers side door gaps right at the front Passenger sill ![](http://i376.photobucket.com/albums/oo205/Ivan_Brennan/20170122_143822_zpslco1ndpk.jpg) Drivers sill ![](http://i376.photobucket.com/albums/oo205/Ivan_Brennan/20170122_143837_zpsfka3qovr.jpg) Using the door hinge mounting points you can see the sill below is further forward on one side. I believe the passenger side sill is in the correct place. However the welding done on both is awful and they're bound to be hiding rot so they'll be coming off Looks like I need to order some more cutting discs. I'm hoping by the end of this week I might be able to get a better place to work on it too. As a side project I'm in the process of turning this ammo tin into a workshop radio. Should be able to do it with a 12V battery, car radio and speakers. Because what I need now is another project apparently ![](http://i376.photobucket.com/albums/oo205/Ivan_Brennan/20170122_140909_zpsemqnxjji.jpg) Cheers!

Forgot to add this as well. MOT style patch under the master cylinder. Luckily you can get a repair panel that goes right up to the edge ![](http://i376.photobucket.com/albums/oo205/Ivan_Brennan/20170122_143950_zpswhjpxpbe.jpg) The more I take this car apart, the more I quite like the original colour of Emerald Green. Like this It reminds me of Fords Modena Green which I love only this is slightly darker. As for the final picture I'd like to get the same sort of look to this. Loosing the rear bumper really shows of the shape and painting some of the chrome bits black seems to simplify the lines a bit. That and a drop in altitude really transform the car I think

Not a fan of the blackend chrome personally unless ALL chrome is done, probably even bumpers, but a shame to lose that jewellery. GT6 shape will always look good anyway!

Very nice looking job you're doing there.
Have you seen the two sets of alloys in your PCD I have in the classifieds?
Might give you the look you're after and at the same time a little different to the more usual minilite replicas.

These come with some bits chrome and some bits black though. The trim that goes along the top of the rear wings is black as are some things inside like the gauge trim rings. A lot of the chrome on the car is in poor condition so it makes sense for now to paint some of it black. I'll see how it looks anyway and if looks curse word I'll source decent chrome or re-chrome what I've got

I've always preferred the look of the rear ends on the Mk 1 & 2 GT6s (and the 1, 2 & 3 Spitfires), and have never been a big fan of the seventies restyle that all the Triumph range got with the squared off rear end; but that Mk3 looks good without the bumper. Very "purposeful".
Keep it up, it'll soon be summer!

Bloody hell, this refurb looks to be getting rather involved! Great work though, and I like the idea of returning to emerald green. Personally speaking though, the mk3 is perfect in red, with bumpers retained. Keep going!

I like the later Spitfire & GT6's and the black trim looks good. I like bumper less cars but if it was me I would fill and smooth the bumper mounts but the car looks great. I love the colour
