I could have bought this a while ago, it was the right money buit I didn;t fancy it because it was straight six and was on chrome smoothies which looked a bit ghey. So then I see it in the flesh as it were, on the showfield, on a set of nice wheels and its a whole nother car. And I wish I'd baggsied it before.

I turned down a mk1 3dr Escort about 8 or 9 years ago because it needed minor welding to the drivers footwell. The price? £650.

pair of Austin A100 Atlantics, absolute basket cases, but for under $100 would have made a mad custom.

I should have bought the 2.5 NA Land Rover 90 I saw just before I bought my old '71 Series 2a...
they were the same money, but the 2a won because it was tax exempt.... it cost me an additional £1500 to save the £170 a year (at the time) road tax, because the 2a was so knackered! ho hum...

Java Triumph Stag.........Manual, great interior and well looked after when it was on the road. Turned up in a lockup about 10 minutes from my house. Been laid up in a garage for about 4 years, I told the owner I'd take it away (or give him 500 quid, eventually) but my neighbour couldn't keep his mouth shut and told him that it was worth much more (which I'd mistakingly told him earlier : Bit galled when it later sold on eBay (as was) for 2.5k. Ouch. Oh well.... So lesson learnt, keep your cards close to your chest.

Absolutely I had a slightly different experience with a 96 Rover 800 Vittesse Coupe (the 2.0 turbo nutter version) Parked opposite me - neighbour who is clueless with cars Supposed clutch failure and a few other minor faults - he wanted £50 for it.... I opened my own mouth and said bosh it on the bay of E and he hadn't got ebay ore even internet acccess so I said I'd do it for him Took pics - good avert - 30 mins of my time Listing ended at £870 - bu gger He did bung me a £100 so no bad taste - just a lesson learned

A lot, but three spring to mind. Daihatsu Charade Turbo Cabriolet - super rare (hence hardtop shown), was on eBay years ago, I was all geared up to buy it then my Mira came up instead so I bought that. Often wonder what would have happened if I'd got that instead, but alas I didn't have enough cash for both! Daihatsu Domino - absolutely mint condition one in the best colour (blue) with the 2 cyl engine, again, no money! Was an absolute minter too, didn't look like it had a speck of rust on it. Daihatsu Charmant LGX - Guess what? Money again. It was the LGX, the best spec you could get here, with sofa seats and even one of the best colour schemes, blue top, silver bottom. However, to counteract it, here is one I'm glad I didn't get. Daihatsu Mira TR-4 - Looked an interesting buy, the TR-4 being probably the oddest Mira ever made and pretty much guaranteed to be the only one in the country. The TR-4 was basically a FWD Mira TR-XX (660cc SOHC 3cyl turbo) with the addition of four wheel steering and deletion of most of the sports bodykit. However something didn't sit right, the seller wanted to pick me up and drive me to the car, some of the stuff said didn't seem to stack up. Saw it for sale later from someone else and it had a homemade perspex rear window which he didn't mention (unless that happened after). Couldn't see much evidence of the Tein suspension either.

Not retro, but... H - Plate 4x4 Saphire Cosworth. My friend got it from one of his customers for £1000. A bloody grand!!! Loaded lady owner didnt know it was worth anything, and as it had been laid up for a couple of months at her stables casually asked if he knew anyone who'd take it away for her. Nice standard car with 10 years of history including a rebuilt engine from Burtons. Even found a spare head in the boot....! Needed a brake caliper and two tiny bits of welding on the drivers side floor for the MOT. Serviced top to bottom, fitted an AP HD clutch and did 1 track day and maybe 100 road miles in it in a year. Gave me 1st chance at it for £2500, didnt have the cash of garage space at the time. Got sold to a local lad for much, much more who thrashed the poo out of it and lunched the 'box. Total waste. A complete . And...! There was a crystal blue 2.9 XR4x4 on ebay I missed winning by £2 as I was on holiday.. Ho hum...
