I think the Swedes have proven that Volvo engines can produce ridiculous power... how cost effective that power is I don't know.... a guy on VZi has managed to get a turbo T5 engine into his beetle now that thing is quick, a lot of hard work though. Thats adaptorman. His whole build up thread is on here as well

How about Lexus/Toyota 4litre V8. £800 for a car wrapped arround it with 12 months ticket. 250BHP standard and the whole Tom's/Mines/Apexi catalogue to choose from.

hers an off the wall suggestion.
Citroen CX 25 Gti Turbo engine.
2.5 4 cyl pushrod OHV. garret turbo and on Turbo 2's intercooler too. around 180bhp standard but with some mods (not all cheap) over 400 bhp more then possible and reliable.

Nah Penski, sold it off a while ago Only thing that stopped me using it was it's impressive girth! Still like to entertain the idea though. Maybe when I build a spaceframe ;D

My fave engine (though Ive never had one) they can be had for cheap in a whole car and they are awesome and really light.

I bought mine with Zero history, and about due a belt. But they aren't so fussy about belts as some small revhead 4 pots. It is badged as a Toyota Celsior rather than a Lexus LS400, but it looks the same, drives the same and by god that thing punches when you floor it.
So quiet though. Even on the motorway you can't hear the engine. 4 litres and 250bhp is hardly stressing a quad cam v8. The standard ECU is pretty locked down and it controls the dash too, so you need to piggy back it with something like an emanage if you want to stay injection.
I believe the Aussies like to stick on a pair of turbos, and japs like to slap on superchargers.

how 'revvy' is it?
could one dump the injection and run carbs relatively easily?

I think the 'V' is quite tight, in order to keep it dimensionally fairly small.
Some kind of custom inlet would be on the cards. Not sure how easy it would be.
Its a 32 valve quad cam so I'm guessing its revvy but ive no first hand with them.

The 1UZFE does rev well, above 4000RPM it does pick up it's skirt. Tops out about 6500RPM as standard. You have to be careful about the outputs though, most seem to make about 200BHP at the crank on the rollers in Australia. People do make uprated parts for them but at the moment they cost a small fortune. Single supercharger will see about 300BHP on a standard bottom end if you keep the revs sane about 6000RPM. If you do a lot of head work, raise the CR to 11.5:1, make an 8-throttle system and have a custom ECU you can see 7500RPM and 300BHP on an otherwise standard engine although your mileage may vary. The last thing you'd wanna do is put carbs on it Penski, waste of time and a decent custom injection system would be the way to go

As Wickidbad said the Toyota/Lexus 1UZFE is a bit of a bargain and is pretty light/compact for a 32v V8 (a couple have been put into MX-5's) and it has six bolt mains. Not such a great following in the aftermarket as some but have a reasonable following in Oz, respond very well to forced induction - there's some vids on YouTube of a Ultima running a 1000bhp twin turbo lump . Most are auto's but you can buy bellhousings to connect them to Supra 5 and 6 speed manuals. I think the 1JZ 2.5 turbo's inline six (old Supra Turbo, Soarer) go for cheap as well as everyone wants the later 3.0 2JZ version.
