Hi PP, Thanks for remembering that I asked for first refusal. Having sold my Cougar ( UK version ) and my Foxbody, I bought a suitable replacement that was punted as being ready to go, just needing carpet and headlining. Needless to say, that wasn't strictly correct! The front indicators don't work, speedo doesn't work, wipers don't work, the fuel gauge reads "full" until you turn the ignition on and then the needle goes off the scale and I'm almost certain that either the brake flexi pipes have degraded internally or the servo is fubar'd. However, it does need carpet and a headlining. So, feeling slightly screwed and as my Charger is almost ready but not quite, the new addition needs a little bit of work as well and my Hilux now needs the turbo replacing, I'd love to know the details of the Firebird. Feel free to PM me the info and what you'd like for it. Thanks again

If you decide to part ways with the Fox bodies please bear me in mind. I have a cunning plan that involves big motors, big turbos and the destruction of rear bumpers.... P

Somehow I missed this before or maybe I got in here when it had a different title and forgot about it?! Best regards from the outskirts of Köln! It did have a different title at one point, it was originally called "Not Twelve Cars In A Year" catchy eh? Took me ages to think that one up ha ha! Next time i'm in Köln i shall keep an eye out for your Golf, although oddly there's one just like yours running about around here at the moment, even has VANS on the doors, and white wheels too! Unless of course you are running around Winchester? If not, then you've definately inspired someone! So tonight, this happened... Yep, i have finally decided to sell my Talbot Alpine. So igotthepoison if you fancy it back let me know To be honest i am not happy about selling it, but if the truth be known i really need to have a culling of my out of control collection, plus i could do with the money. So as ever, here's the link. Initially i had decided to sell my Chev-suzu pick up, and i put it up for grabs hoping against the odds not to have to deal with some ebay idiot who was going to mess me about ha ha! Anyway, it sold! For £1901! Not quite as much as i had hoped for, but close enough! I then did something rather foolish... I celebrated the fact that i'd sold it by buying this... The famous first fill shot! Yes, it's a Mitsubishi L200. I'd never had one of these before, but i quite fancied one, and because i was sure that the guy who bought my Chevrolet wasn't going to mess me about, i bought it. Yes, i know i was having a culling... Or trying to! Anyway, between me winning this L200, and me collecting it i get this message from the winning bidder on the Chevrolet. "Unfortunately I've not been able to secure insurance. I had an accident earlier this year, so they won't insure me or rather if they do it is an excessive amount. I am truly sorry for this and the inconvenience caused. I honestly didn't think it would be such a problem. I can try to continue tomorrow, however I don't want to waste anymore of your time and fully understand if you would prefer to try find another buyer." I was so ticked off, mostly at myself for not learning anything about ebay so called bidders during my Twelve Cars In A Year saga... IDIOT!! I didn't even bother to respond to his email, because i sort of had a problem. (and it's not just an addiction to buying cars on ebay, although clearly that is a problem!) No my problem looked like this... Granted, it's not the worst looking problem in the world, but in reality i wanted, and needed to sell the Chevrolet, so i offered it to the next guy down on the bidding list, who never got back to me and obviously didn't take me up on the offer. I don't blame him, if ever i get a second chance offer i never take it as i always feel that i have had my bids artificially raised by one of the sellers friends or something. So, only one thing for it, re-list it for another ten days, and wait for less interest in it, and a lower selling price, which seems to always happen when you re-list stuff. So after a couple of days of it being one fleabay for a second time one of my friends decided that he wants to buy my Chevrolet, we chat on farcebook about it, and he decides that he'd like to come and see it, and maybe to buy it. I figured that would be fine, as my listing doesn't end for a couple of days after the weekend, so i should be able to end it without drama should he buy it. In the meantime i get this email from ebay:- "After reviewing your eBay account, it appears that you haven't followed our Inappropriate Seller Terms policy... Listing terms and conditions that state the seller is not obligated to complete a transaction with an eligible winning bidder is not allowed... Examples of terms and conditions that are not allowed include: - 'This item is for sale locally, and may not be available after the transaction' - Stating that you "reserve the right to cancel a bid at any time" even after a buyer has won the item - Stating that you "aren't responsible for delivery" after the item has shipped" This is because someone has obviously reported me for saying in my ebay ad:- "I have this advertised elsewhere and so i reserve the right to end the auction early." Which, given the amount of people who mess sellers around on ebay by not completing the transaction i think is fair enough! And as i'd already been messed about by one so called buyer, i was pretty angry about ebays message, and i would have told them so if there was any way to email them back! The thing is, if ebay garaunteed that the transaction would be completed by the winning bidder, that would be fair enough, but they wont, so i really don't see why i shouldn't be able to safe gaurd myself by offering it elsewhere while it was being advertised on ebay! Anyway, ebay's email went on to say "When a buyer wins and pays for an item, they expect to receive it. Including conditions that do not comply with eBay’s user Agreement can result in a poor experience for the buyer and negative feedback for the seller." REALLY!! Well it it should work both ways, when a seller sells an item they expect the goddam buyer to come and funkin well buy it!! I was pretty angry at the time, but i'm over it now! So my friend asks me how much i wanted for the Chevrolet. I told him that he could have it for £2000 which is about what it cost me. He thought that was a fair price, and said he'd be around at the weekend to pick up the pick up! Of course stupidly in the meantime i took, and then posted a set of photos of the L200 on farcebook. So this same friend thought that that the L200 was a cool truck too, and asked me how much i had paid for that. I told him it was £1300, and that was the end of that. So, Saturday rolls around, and said friend shows up to buy the Chevrolet, he gave it a look over, we took it for a spin, and he liked it, then he asked me what the L200 was like. So like an idiot i said, lets take it for a ride, so off we went. When we got back we went inside my house, and my friend got out this wad of cash and proceeded to count it out. He got to £1300 and stopped. I said, no, the L200 was £1300, but the Chevrolet was £2000, then he told me that he wanted the L200 instead! So... For crying out loud! There it goes!! But before he left with it i did make sure that he realised that i had only had it for about ten days, and didn't know what, if anything is wrong with it yet, but he could have it if he was willing to take the risk that it might not be perfect. He said he was, so we did the deal, and i hung onto the Chevrolet which was still obviously on fleabay! Finally, just a couple of days later the Chevrolet sells on ebay... As predicted it sold for less, just £1850! Which to be fair was not as bad as i was expecting it to sell for! Except, it didn't sell! Of FFFFfffflamin' Fox Picture! About twenty minutes before the auction ended i get this email from the then winning bidder, and they guy who actully went on to win it. "Sorry but apparently you have to cancel my bid as the insurance company's can't track the identity of this vehicle so I will not be purchasing if my bid stays the highest." and after winning it i get this from him "I will not be purchasing the vehicle as the information is not correct checking the insurance it comes up as a 1962 2 door coup chevy and other insurance company's won't insure my son or I to drive" So i say to him that the information is correct, but he emails me back with, "Sorry it is not insurable!" I said to him that of course it's insureable, and told him to check the DVLA website, and sent him the link to it so that he could see this for himself. I pointed out to this so-called ebay buyer that the truck was taxed, and for it to be taxed it needed to be insured, so clearly it was insured, and i had insured it. But he just responded by saying "Not interested thanks to many if buts and maybes" I decided that maybe this buyer was a window licker of biblical proportions, so i just gave up and went and did something more constructive instead... I headed off into the woods shouting and screaming like a crazy man! The thing was, after i had calmed down, about two days later i thoght that i would try the original buyer to see why he couldn't insure it either, so i sent him a message on ebay saying, I wonder if you could help me? After i sold the truck to you, and you couldn't insure it i re-listed it, and have sold it to someone else. However, they said before the auction ended that they were not going to come for it as they can't insure it. Infact they said that it was un-insurable! They said that it doens't show up on any insurance database as a pick up, and infact apparently it is shown as a 1962 two door Chevy coupe! Which in my opinion it can't do as it has a '54' numberplate, and you can't put a newer numberplate on an older car. However if you check on the DVLA website and it brings it up as a Chevrolet GMC, so the information is correct. So it's not registered incorrectly, and not uninsurable at all, nothing is, as if you check the DVLA website you can see that it's taxed, and that's because i have insured it as you can't tax a vehicle that isn't insured! Anyway, i've just tried to get a quote from comparethemarket.com and i've managed to get atleast ten quotes for it from them. But for whatever reason the numberplate doesn't work, and i've had to enter the details manually, but once i've done that i've got quotes ranging from about £500 to just over £700 fully comp for me at 47 years old with no no claims discount! So i'm just wondering if you had the same problem as the most recent buyer? I waited for a reply, and to be honest i really didn't expect one, but then i got one from him, and he said:- "I had a similar problem, when searching for insurance or on the DVLA website I couldn't find the vehicle using the registration number. I even tried on we buy any car.com to see if I could find the vehicle on there. The only way I could find your vehicle was to manually enter the information into the site. Even on the DVLA website, once I manually added the information the information was for the correct vehicle and I could see it was taxed. However my added problem was the accident I had at the beginning of the year. When I did enter the information manually and with the accident on record, the insurance companies wanted to charge me close to or more the amount I was going to buy the vehicle for, which I wasn't prepared to pay. I'm not sure why the registration number can't be used when searching for insurance, but yes I did have a similar problem." I was quite grateful for this insight, and i can fully understand why he wouldn't want to be paying nearly as much as the cost of a vehicle to insure it. The question is, why, when you try to insure it by typing in the registration number do the insurance data bases decide that it's a 1962 two door Chevy coupe? How can that be when it has a '54' numberplate? And more importantly, how can i rectify this situation so that when i attenpt to sell it again, the winning bdder can actually get it insured! Answers on a postcard please... Actually, if you could answer on this thread it would probably be a little more helpful... And faster! The funny thing is, now i'm not even sure if i want to sell it. It's a good truck, and i always thing having a pick up is very handy. So in a bizarre twist i'm probably going to hang on to it for a bit... Unless of course something else comes along!

I've had similar issues with insurance engines and the like not registering a couple of my reg no's. Looking into a bit deeper I discovered that the cars were initially registered on private plates when brand new then assigned an age related plate later in the line. Ironically they were both 54 plate cars with similar endings too.
Not saying this is your issue but might help, has it had a plate change recorded on the mot history online?

I had a similar experience when trying to get quotes for my Vespa, I thought it was originally because the bike wasn't on DVLA MOT records, possibly something to do with it having been in bits for however many years before I got it, though when I tax checked it I could see it was SORN and the details were correct just no details returned when MOT checked, odd indeed with your truck as that is and has been on the road for a while. I'd ring them.
Having googled other people with this problem using Confused.com it seems the response from confused is this
"We source our registration details from a DVLA provider, but these aren’t always completely accurate as it can depend on when the system has been updated. New models and imported vehicles in particular can be difficult to locate. "
Though surely their details have been updated since the truck was made. I'd have thought that if there really was an issue with the plate Police would have contacted you already from the last time you drove through an ANPR.

Ahh pistonpopper... what is it with you and ebay??! I do get a sense of foreboding when you sell something! :-P must be said ebay is full of messers/prats/*insert swearword of choice heres*.. I know good buyers/sellers too, (hey we all buy/sell stuff!) though you do seem very skilled at weeding them out! Makes a better adventure tho I suppose :-P I do wish you well with sale of the alpine, if I wasn't saving for a house move I would be after that! I would even break my no-more-white-cars rule (driven 2, killed both) so hope it goes to a good home and you get a GOOD buyer!!! :-)

I favour the word "Berk" as a description for persons such as those being found during your ebay sales experiences, although, I have also found an equal number of "Berks" when selling in normal classifieds. I am however an advocate of the full fat rhyming slang meaning rather than the skinny Latte low tone innocuous "idiot" meaning of the word.

just a thought, but not anything to do with it being a commercial vehicle is it? i ran it through Compare the market, and money supermarket both thought it to be a 2 door Chevy LI Auto 1964-2016. however when i tried the reg on Autotrader (Sell a car) it recognised it to be commercial and asked if it was a van, when i said yes it pulled in Chevrolet, gold 2004 Diesel so its closer good luck with it though.

Did you ever have an issue with your Firebird? If I go to more mainstream insurance companies with my Skyline I either get "is a micra?" or "is it a GTR?", the latter I sort of get as that's the closest the computer can find that was ever sold here. The former gets them a dial tone...

Mr Pistonpopper, i was wondering if the sale of this alpine could perhaps instigate a revival for your original...?

Was meant to be crossing the border yesterday but decided against it when the weather forecasts said thunder n rain. Living in Scotland, rain aint too much of an issue, but driving 4 hours in it i really couldnt bring myself to do. Nothing booked so no great loss and a crackin pair o storms to watch!
So what did i do? Yes i looked at this thread......
.....then the other one! I then took inspiration in your wramblings and took the wife n youngest 2 for a run to "nowhere" and ended up in Glen Doll! Tell you what, there is nothing Mundane about my Mondeo!
But then i am now wrambling on! My interest here was piqued by your Alpine as it is what i first drove after passing my test way back in 88. My dad an me even re-engined it soon after for some reason (1.2-1.5??) and it did him another wee while. I then see you drive a Mustang which i would love to get one day! Other things you mention i can also relate to, as if i had somewhere to store em like you, i would also have a wee collection! All the best, Geoff.

So, over two months since my last update i figured it was about time i made some sort of effort! You might want to make yourself comfortable and maybe get a cuppa! Todays episode is going to be kinda BIG, and probably in three parts... Part 1. Ahh pistonpopper... what is it with you and ebay??! I do get a sense of foreboding when you sell something! I've got to tell you, you are not alone. Even the thought of putting something on ebay fills me with dread! It should be so simple, but due to the amount of messers it's just a pain in the buttocks! As ever i have given this some thought, and here is my solution. Someone puts something on ebay for auction. Someone bids on said item and wins the auction. The listing, and sellers fees are then instantly paid by the winning bidder, no ifs, no buts, paid straight away automatically. The winning bidder then gets an invoice for the item they have won, minus the fees that they have already paid... Simple! All the ebay wasters wiped out instantly! So tonight, this happened... Yep, i have finally decided to sell my Talbot Alpine. But... what? Flubbergusted. Flubbergusted indeed! The thing is, i have got quite a collection at the moment, and i really need to try and raise some revenue for the Carlton restoration, although it's so bad that i reckon it'll be more like a recreation! I have another reason for selling it, and the other cars that i sell, and that reason is neighbours. I have, as i look from the window of Pistonpopper towers three cars parked outside. They're all taxed, insured, MOT'd and ready to roll at a moments notice. However i change them all of the time with three other cars that i have parked outside on the street of where i work. These too are all taxed, insured, MOT'd and ready to roll at a moments notice. So sometimes i go out in one car, and come home in another! This it would appear has become a problem for some of my neighbours, actually it only seems to be some of my newer neighbours. The other day a lady who lives along the road from Pistonpopper Towers and who only moved in about six months ago stopped me as i got out of my car and had a right go at me in the street. She had a real rant about how i was taking up all the parking spaces in the street with my cars. So i said to her that i wasn't taking up all the spaces, i was only taking up three. But she kept on moaning. Then i said to her, so whos is that car? She said, it's mine. I said, and that one? She said, it's my husbands. Oh i said, so whos is the van? She said, it's my husbands works van. So then i said, so you've also got three vehicles parked in the street. But she said that her husbands work van didn't count because it wasn't their personal car! So i said, of course it counts, it's taking up a car parking space, now sod off! i was pretty grumpy, and this is because i'm also getting it from the neighbours of my workplace where i park some of my other cars. I have started getting these annonymous notes left on my cars outside where i work. Now my place of work has a pretty large frontage, and i try to park outside the building, and three cars doesn't fill up the whole frontage of my building. Now i have this neighbour there who has moved in just over a year ago, and it is them that is leaving the annonymous letters on my cars. They think that they're being clever because they leave these annonymous letters signing off, "The angry residents of the street". What this idiot doesn't realise is that i have known most of the residents on this street for over thirty years, and beleive me when they have a problem, they don't leave an annonymous letter, they come over and tell you there's a problem. But i've asked them, and they all seem fine with me parking three cars outside my building. The other thing is i have a security camera on my building, and i can see this muppet come out of his house, and put the note on my cars. I honestly feel like writing him a note saying to the annoymous angry resident, stop putting notes on my car. P.S. you're not so annonymous as i can see you with my security camera putting notes on my car, so stop trying to hide behind the other residents of the street who i have known for thirty odd years! But then i feel like i am sinking to his level, and to be frank i can't be arsed with writing a letter to this moron! But it has to be said that it's kinda just all getting to me at the moment, and this is why i have decided to have a culling! I want to just get down to a resonable amount of cars, something like, oh i dunno, five or so. Or atleast get my collection into single figures again! So starting with the Alpine, the culling began... It was initially won, and i say won in the loosest possible sense by ebay member 'bolde-uk2015' who only had 6 feedbacks! I thought, oh, here we go, but then i looked at his profile and it said they were based in United Kingdom, and have been an eBay member since 25 May, 2015, so i figured that maybe they just didn't do much trading on ebay. So i sent them an email asking when they were collecting the Alpine... Nothing... Waited... Nothing... Waited some more... Nothing... Sent another email and waited... Nothing... So then i decided to check their feedback. As you can see, not exactly a glowing report! First feedback good, then it all goes shitfaced from there on in! DAMMIT... As predicted by Darkspeed , the curse of the ebay idiot had stuck again! As ebay are less than useless about the idiots who infest their site i figured that i'd have a little whingy whiney moment to myself and then re-list it for a second time. This time i decided not to start the bidding at £1, but instead go straight for £400, and hope for the best, as ever the second time around it sold for less, just £460, a £65.99 drop from the first time it sold, but never mind. So the guy who bought it sent me a message and asked if i could deliver to Fareham at all as he wanted to do some bits on it before taxing insuring etc. This is not normally something i would even consider doing, but a quick look at google maps and i saw that he was about 26 miles from me, and as i enjoy driving the Alpine very much i figured why not, it will be my farewell voyage! So i said i would deliver it if he could paypal me a deposit of £60 that will leave £400 to pay in cash when I deliver the Alpine. So that was agreed, and i delivered it for free. I did however have some concerns about driving it. My concern was this, as i hadn't driven it for a long time, i felt ok about selling it, however, as i was delivering it, how would i feel about it after driving it for half an hour or so? Would i still be happy to sell it? Well, i guess i'd know soon enough, the day of deliverence came, a Monday no less, so i took the morning off work, convinced my friend to come with me to give me a lift home in his car, and off we went... Except the battery was flat where i hadn't driven it in months, so my friend gave me a jump start, and THEN, off we went! Driving along the M27 at just over 60mph i must admit i was wondering why i was selling my car, and by the time i had arrived to do the deal i was completely ready to back out of it, turn around, and drive home. But i kept telling myself that if i did that, then i too would be an ebay messer, just i'd be one from the other side of the deal. All too quickly we had arrived at the buyers house. He came out and gave the Alpine a fairly good looking over, and pointed out a few things that he wasn't too happy about, and oddly i kept thinking, thats fine, i'll just take it home again! Then he decided that he wanted to take it for a bit of a test drive, but ofcourse i had turned it off, and with the flat battery it refused to start! I figured that this would put the new owner off, but it didn't! So we hooked it back up to my friends car for a jump start. It then started easily, and we were off for our test drive for a few minutes or so, and the whole time i was thinking that hopefully he was going to back out of the deal, but he didn't. When we got back to his house he had another look over it, and eventually he decided that he was happy, he'd hand over the cash, and we'd fill out the documents... Drat! That was that then, my adventure with Tallbot Alpine C592 NJM was over. One last photo and a pat on the bonnet before we drove away! In the car on the way home my friend and I were chatting about how i was feeling after selling the Alpine, i told him that i wasn't that thrilled to be honest, and that i actually would've kept that car atleast until i had my original one back on the road. But i told him that i must be strong, and the culling must continue. I followed this up by saying that if the guy had decided he didn't want it, then i wasn't going to talk him into it, i'd just jump back in the Talbot, and high tail it back home! But as that hadn't happened, then i would just have to let it go, and that i guess it was for the best as i really did need to cut down my fleet! The following day i got an email from the Alpines new owner, he said that it's not going well so far and that the car is not ready to drive because of these faults:- Rear wiper not working Battery dead will not charge Front wiper only one working Battery tray insecure Fans don't work Boot rusted though Drivers window not working No radio Two tyres need replace due to cracks Exhaust mount broken This was a bit of a surprise, and i replied that i was sorry to hear that he wasn't happy with his new car. But as i am not a mechanic, and don't really have much in the way of mechanical knowledge (which i think is pretty obvious if you read any of my threads lol) i thought that the car was fine. As far as i was concerned it drove just as well as it always did, infact to be honest it drives a lot better now than it did when i bought it (sorry igotthepoison ). When i delivered it to him the previous day it drove fine, therefore in my opinion it is ready to drive. I also reminded him that it is a 31 year old car, not a brand new car, or even a completely restored car. But after i delivered it to him free of charge, and he gave it a look over, inspected it, took it for a test drive, and when he was happy with it, and handed over the payment for it before filling in the V5c so it that became legally his, this then meant that he approved of it, and he was happy with it. If at any point while he was inspecting it, or test driving it he was not happy at all with it, then this was the time to say that he wasn't happy with the car, and didn't want to complete the sale, not over 24 hours later, and not after filling in the V5c. I might have been a bit grumpy, but due to the other idiots that i've had to deal with, my tolerance levels for this are at an all time low. Anyhoo, a couple of days later i get another message from the Alpines new owner, he said simply that the car was listed as ready to drive. Starts first time, and when it did not start i had said it was a newish battery just needed a charge. He went on to say that he was going to try and fix the faults and he would have to buy a battery! Unfortunately he had caught me on the wrong day. I had already fallen out with my neighbour over my two cars that i now had parked outside Pistonpopper Towers, and i had arrived at work to find a note on each of my cars. To say i was pushed over the edge was an understatement. On top of this i had noticed that he had painted the poor thing, and was trying to punt (unsuccessfully) it on on another forum for more than he had paid me, so ofcourse i let the poor new owner of my Alpine have it with both barrels, and replied by saying that I didn't know what to say as it was fine when I had it, but things can and do fail on old cars without any notice, I then reminded him again that it is a 31 year old car, not a brand new car, or even a completely restored car. Also that i had delivered it to him free of charge, and after he gave it a look over, inspected it, took it for a test drive, and was sure he was happy with it, he filled in the V5c so it that became legally his, he then handed over the payment for it, which obviously meant that he approved of it, and was happy with his new purchase. If at any point while he was inspecting it, or test driving it he wasn't happy at all with it, then that was the time to say that he wasn't happy with it, and he didn't want to complete the sale, not over five days later, not after filling in the V5c, and definitely not after painting it. I have noticed that you have put it up for sale, so you may want to mention these 'faults' that have developed since you have owned it. I finished of by wishing him good luck with the sale! I was not having a great day, and i was properly angry! The following day after i had calmed down a bit i started to think that maybe i'd been a bit of a nob! Perhaps i had been wrong, i mean it has happened before, i seem to remember a day back in the summer of 1979 when i was wrong the last time, so obviously it wasn't out of the question! Anyhoo, i had spent the day thinking about it at work, and came to the conclusion that maybe i should offer to pay for the battery as i had actually said in my advert that it is quite a nice example of a 31 year old Talbot Alpine, it starts first time every time, and is great fun to own and drive. I meant this too, when i was driving it it did start first time every time, but as i hadn't driven it for a while maybe the battery had given up. I had also decided that as a mark of good will i would give him the replacement wings i had bought, and some other spares i had collected. So i logged onto fleabay, and noticed that he had left me feedback... Oh dear!! Well it was probably justified after my rant, but lets just say that had a negative effect on my mood, and all thoughts of offering to chip into the price of the battery, and give him the wings and other spares i had collected sort of evaporated right there and then! Moving on, rumour has it that he is now breaking the car for spares, which seems a bit of a backwards move after re-painting it, but there's probably method in his madness. Personally i don't care for it's new look. I cannot pin point what it is that i don't like about it, but something just doesn't work for me, but each to their own. It has to be said that i did consider painting it matt black, but for me there was something about it's beigeness that i liked... I dunno, maybe it's being middle aged... I'll just get me pipe and slippers and go sit by the fire! By the way, if you do happen to be in the market for a Talbot Alpine, then it's on Gumtree, and it's Ad id is:- 1186539150. I stand by what i said in my original advert, it was quite a nice example of a 31 year old Talbot Alpine, it is great fun to own and drive, but it's not a brand new car, or even a restored car. It bares the markings, and patina of a thirty one year old car that has survived over three decades of use on the highways and byways in all the weathers that the English climate can throw at it (although it's now covered over with blackboard paint or something!) but it was in nice condition for its age although it is not perfect like a brand new or completely restored car is! Right then, moving on, but sticking with the Alpine for a while longer. What was it like for me? Well, with the exception of this:- So, everything was going well, maybe a little too well... On Saturday 14 June 2014, I was out running some errands... ...after driving for over an hour, and racking up about another 85 miles the Talbot decided that what we needed to experience was the joy of coasting to a halt beside a busy A34, which was lovely due to your fuel line being blocked with sludge from your fuel tank. It was good, and i really enjoyed it. Under the bonnet that little 1.6 litre engine whirred away in a very uncarachteristic way for this particular Simca engine, it didn't rattle like a bag full of rusty spanners! It was powerful enough to whip the Alpine along the road at decent enough speeds that you could keep up with the modern traffic who were keeping to the speed limits! It's not a fast car by any stretch of the imagination, but driving it you felt like you were going fast! Inside the dashboard was functional, however i always meant to swap that non working clock for a rev counter, but never seemed to get around to it. There was no radio but to be fair even if there was one, you would've struggled to hear it over the loud exhaust! The front seats were lovely big, comfy things, which probably didn't hold you in very well if you were driving it like you stole it, but for normal driving, they were very comfortable, like driving around in your favourite armchair! I spent a whole day driving this thing once, and when i got back home it felt as comfortable getting out of it as it did when i got into it! Brilliant! In the back it was the same deal, big comfy chairs. The Pistonpoppets said it was great in the back, and said they had plenty of room, and it was comfortable! They did however moan when i fitted the seatbelts! Now for a few pretty pictures of the outside of it in all it's beige fabulousness! Fantastic... The fourth picture is my personal favourite. Personally i think it's not a bad looking machine at all, and to me it is just a bit more interesting, and unusual than the normal Cortinas, Golfs, Cavaliers, etc that everyone else wants. Despite being Hearing Aid Beige in colour (when it was mine) this is not the car for someone who wants to just blend in! It was a car for an individual, something that would stand out from the crowd where ever you are, be it driving along the road, at a car show, or doing the weekly shopping. So would i have another one? Well, i don't really need one... I still have my original one, and a Simca 1308 in bits spread across several council garages! Mr Pistonpopper, i was wondering if the sale of this alpine could perhaps instigate a revival for your original...? Well, when i bought this Beige one part of the reason was because the Pistonpoppets wondered what they were like to drive in, and partly i bought it because i hoped that it would help to re-kinidle my interest in restoring my original one. I can say that my interest in it has been rejuvinated, and once my Carlton project is finished, my original Alpine is next on the list! It's a while off yet, but watch this space! Now before i move on to the next installment of this thread, and while we are talking about cars that i used to own. A while back i posted some pictures of my Range Rover. As you can see, not too shabby, infact a bit of a golden oldie! Well, like a great deal of you probably do, i often find myself wondering what has happened to my old cars once i am no longer their custodian. Well, good news, i need wonder no more about my old Range Rover as during the summer it turned up on ebay... I think it's safe to say it doens't look quite as good as it did when i had it... What the heck happened? And on that note, you might want to go and brew yourselves another cuppa, and maybe have a Digestive or two, and prepare yourselves for part 2...

Hopefully you've now refreshed yourselves and you're back ready for more of my mindless babble? OK then, let's start with this... My 1989 Volkswagen Scirocco Scala. (yes, this was the infamous first fill shot!) Now, last year when i had the Golf Cabriolet i waffled on about it... For a car called "GOLF" i should've thought i would've been able to get all my Golf bats in the boot!! ...But, and this is a big but because i like bit butts and i cannot lie... Ahem, anyway, it's not the best looking car out there is it? Sure, it is pretty inoffensive, and easy on the eye, but we go back to the whole Kitchen Appliances idea again, you know it does the job, you might even know it does the job well. But do you care? Do you ever look at it and think thats a superb thing, i'm so glad it's mine. Sadly the answer for me atleast was no. I can't help feeling that if you were buying this thing new back in 2001 you would've been happy, you would've thought you done well buying such a fine piece of German engineering. And this would would've been great right up until the point that you pulled up at a set of traffic lights and someone pulled up along side you in a Vauxhall Astra convertible, or a Renault Megane convertible. Sadly i think that even the Rover 416 Convertible and the Ford Escort convertible were better looking. Plus, you can bet that both the Ford and the Rover offerings had more toys, and were probably cheaper to buy in the first place! So why would you have bought a Golf in the first place? Well, for me i reckon that it's all down to very cleaver marketing by VW. It's been ingrained into our culture from the very beginning that Golfs are good, probably due to the fact that it's pretty much folklore that Beetles are cool. Because Beetles are cool, it has followed on that the follow up act from Volkwagen is cool too, and people like cool things, and like to think that they're in with the cool kids. So they buy the Golf, because it's still a VW, but it's newer than the Beetle, and for a lot of people newer = better, so, newer, better cooler! Plus of course the Golf caters for all, there's the standard Golf, for Granny, the GTi for the boy racer, The Estate for the family man, the Cabriolet for the young woman about town, and now of course there's the R32, for the boy racer who never grew up! Plus inititially there was also the very cool Caddy, for the workforce! So VW had cleverly catered for all, and this surely is one of the reasons for the love of the Golf. For me however, i didn't love it. It was ok, but i've driven more interesting, and more inspiring cars this year. So sadly i still don't get the Golf thing, and my guess is that i never will, and thats just fine, because it would be a dull old world if we all loved the same thing, especially if the same thing was that we all loved Golfs lol! Now then, i know there will be a few of you Golfers out there right now who have thrown their clubs onto the ground with despair and are now crying into your Pringle jumpers and tammyshanter hats. Probably exclaiming that i don't know what i'm talking about, and that i should try driving a 'well sorted' Golf. And you're right, i couldn't agree more, a well sorted Golf would be a heck of a lot better than just a standard Golf. But a 'well sorted' anything will always be better than the standard version.... once it's been 'well sorted' it changes the carachter of the car, so you can't really compare it to the standard car, and as i said at the beginning i wanted an average Golf, so i could try and understand the attraction of owning a Golf. I didn't get Volkwagens other landmark car, the Beetle thing either, i really couldn't see what all the fuss was about. However when i bought one, i found that i thoroughly enjoyed my spell as a Beetle owner, it was great even though i owned it through the winter, and drove it in all the conditions that the English winter climate could throw at it! After owning a Beetle i could see how they get under your skin, it was a great car, and i enjoyed it a lot, and i wondered if i ever did get around to buying a Golf would i would feel the same way about that as i did about the Beetle sadly this was not to be... GOLF's, I just don't get it! (still!) I was so uninspired by the Golf that come the end of the year i said. I'm going to talk about the cars i felt were the worst three, or the three i enjoyed the least if you prefer first. I know this is going to upset the fans, but for me the worst car of the twelve was the 2001 Golf Cabrio. It was a tough call for me to pick this car as the worst car, but one of them had to be, so this is it. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't that it was a bad car, it's just that it was a very bland and boring car. Had it have been a tin-top it would've been truly un-remarkable, and very un-inspiring. It did everything you'd expect it to do, but nothing more. So why wait until now to bring up the Scirocco? Well, simply because i had nothing to say about it. I think Rocco's are very overlooked, particulaly given they drive better than golfs IMO. PP i'm disappointed we have not seen a write up on it, or have i just missed it.. You have even seen it before, when i went to Beach Buggin' 2016... Some of my low tech photos taken on my 1963 Kodak Retinette 1B camera using old 200 asa Truprint film that expired in the late eighties of the Beach Buggin' event held on Southsea common... Thanks for looking! Some splendidly ugly buggy's in there as well. And loving the 'roc with a tow bar. Yep, that was mine! So fear not jpr1977, here is what i have learned from being the custodian of a 1989 VW Scirocco Scala. So where shall i start? How about when i first posted a picture of it on Retro Rides, at the 2016 Beach Buggin' event held on Southsea common, but first, here's a few more photos from the event, starting with... My Scirocco. and lastly... Last year i attended Beach Buggin' for the first time, it is billed as the ultimate VDUB show by the beach due to their location on Southsea Common in the heart of the seafront. The show is fairly unique as it's free to the walking public who come en mass attracted by the amazing displays and is a fantastic celebration of all things VW. The only problem that i find about free car shows is the huge amount of people who turn up which makes taking photographs a bit tricky, but if you're patient enough, you'll get some in the end! Last years objective, get rid of the Golf. This years objective... Get rid of the Scirocco! I was ready to sell it, and i just thought that while i had a captive audience it wasn't going to cost me anything to write a notice and stick it to my windows. I passed the car several times during the day, and often it had a little crowd around it so i stopped to answer questions etc. There seemed to be a fair bit of interest in it, but as ever no one came back to buy it! Still, not to worry, like last year it was a pretty good show with an absolutely huge turnout of cars, and the sickly sweet smell of marijuana being smoked pretty much filled the air the whole day! Well worth checking out if you're into the whole VW scene, or smokin weed, which i guess is pretty much the same thing! Actually its worth checking out even if you're not into the whole VW scene or smokin weed, and i shall probably be going back to it next year, no matter what i'm driving. Should you feel the need to check out a few more of my low quality photos of the show, (yes, lower quality than these!) Then they can be found here... retrorides.proboards.com/thread/191435/beach-buggin-2016Now then, knowing that a Scirocco is basically just a Golf in a pretty party frock i was concerend that owning one would be quite unremarkable, like how i felt about owning a Golf. However, i have always liked how the Scirocco looks, and being a very shallow man like myself means that i hoped that i would overlook it's possible blandness because of it's good looks! I was right to be concerned, it just didn't do it for me, except in the looks department! But nevermind that, let's talk about performance. Under the bonnet lurked a 1.8 litre fuel infected engine, which should have been more than enough fun, but it's biggest problem was this... Yes, really, the Alpine with it's 1.6 litre naturally aspirated engine! When i had my first Alpine i remember wanting a Scirocco, i wanted one really bad. But i never got one until now. I wonder if i had bought one back in the early nineties when i was tooling around in my first Alpine, if i would've found it as big of a dissappointment as i do today? So why is the Alpine with is 1.6 litre naturally aspirated engine better than my Scirocco with its 1.8 litre fuel injected engine? Now i'm not going to sit here and tell you that the Alpine was faster, i mean i'm deluded, but even i wouldn't believe that! The Alpine WASN'T faster, but it felt faster when you were driving it. Worse than that, the Alpine felt more sure footed through the twisties. I never felt that the Alpine wanted to throw me off into the fields, but the Scirocco just didn't feel as sure footed as the Apline, and really didn't inspire confidence at all on the quiet country race tracks um, i mean back roads! This, however may have been due to the choice of tyres that the Scirocco had. I don't know what brand they actually were, but where normal tyres say "Pirelli", or "Good Year", or "Firestone", or something else in large letters on the sidewall, these said "BUDGET" lol like it was something to be proud of! Hey look at me, i've got BUDGET tyres... I'm a cheap ass! I almost felt like painting the wording in with white tyre paint just for comedy value, but didn't because i figured it might hurt the resale value! Anyway, the rubber was pretty damn hard, bordering on plastic, but they were all in good condition, and had tonnes of tread so i left them alone! I personally reckon that they will probably be good for about another 100,000 miles or so! I really should've changed them, but as i wasn't in love with the car, i figured that when i sold it i would suggest to the new owner that they might want to change them. However, the tyres probably we're not the reason for me not liking it. I mean, the tyres i could've changed, and that would've probably transformed the thing completely! It's biggest problem was right here... The interior! Actually, the interior was ok, much like the Golf i had before it was pretty bland, but inoffensive enough. Just not very inspiring. But the seats!! For me i found these incredibly uncomfortable! I was ok for about twenty minutes or so, but anything over about half an hour, and frankly i was walking around like a grumpy old man for a while after we arrived at wherever we were going! This though is not the fault of the Scirocco, this is the fault of the pies! My guess is that when the designers at Volkswagen designed the Scirocco they had in mind a young male in their twenties, with a fit, taught body! I am not that man, or even close. I am probably twice the age of their target audience, and probably twice the weight too! So really i didn't enjoy driving the Scirocco was because of me... And the pies... DAMN YOU PIES!! Why do you have to be so delicious?! The front seats for my, lets call it "luxury" bodywork were just too narrow, and instead of hugging me firmly i felt like i had been shoe horned into it. Couple this with the firm suspension, and the even firmer tyres, and it just made the ride very un-enjoyable. However, in the back... The Pistonpoppets said it was very comfortable, and the seats were lovely! Of course, they are a lot smaller than me lol! The only thing that they really complained about was how hot it got in the back when the sun was out. But apart from that... All good! Now then, the best bit, the reason for wanting one in the first place. The bodywork. Just look at it... Fantastic! Ooh... Corner... better take it easy! Overlooking the fact that it has a couple of rust blisters (which were confined to the doors!) and the fact that the bonnet would appear to have been painted with bitumastic paint, and applied with a yard broom, this is a fantastic looking car. Far and away better looking than the Golf, or, dare i say it? Than any Golf! For me the whole point to owning this car is how it looks, and the visceral imapct it has on me! I know there are better looking cars out there, and i know there are cars out there that have a bigger visceral impact on me. I've even owned them, the biggest of the lot being my red 1977 Pontiac Firebird, when i bought that thing i thought it was the best looking car of all time, and still do. But for me, even though the Scirocco is nowhere near as good looking as my Firebird was, it still does something to me. Its good looks are very similar to another one of my all time favourite cars, and i think that the Scirocco is almost Deloreanesque in its beauty. Great Scott!, Well, i did say almost But the question is though, after the disappointment of the Scirocco, would i have another one? Yes i would, and this is because my Scirocco itch has not been properly scratched. You see, i thought that having a Mk2 would do it for me, and to a certain extent it does, but i have always preferred the look of the Mk1. Even though the Mk2 is really really similar to look at, it's not a Mk1. I think that they are the best looking Sciroccos of the bunch, so as yet my itch has still to be satisfied! Hopefully if i ever find one, it's going to be a more comfortable, and more enjoyable experience than the Mk2 has been. Actually, to be fair i would have one of the latest Sciroccos too. Although i don't think they look anywhere near as good as the earlier Sciroccos, i think they look a lot better than the Corrados! I never liked those things. For me one of the reasons that i bought the Fiat Bravo was that i think it looks a little bit like the current Scirocco! No really! But you've got to really want to see it... Really, Really, REALLY want to see it... Maybe this will help... If i was any good with the sawsall, and the sparkly stick then maybe?.. No? Ok then, perhaps i need to lay off the cough syrup for a while lol. Anyway, this brings me to the end of my little adventure with the Mk2 Scirocco. Why? Because there it goes... I know what you might be thinking, but it's not gone anywhere! Which is sort of true as the lad who lives across the road from me has bought it, which is good because it meant that i didn't need to faff around with the idiots of fleabay, but bad because my nosey neighbours now think i have four cars parked in the street! Incase you're wondering, yes he is closer to who Volkswagen had in mind when they designed the Scirocco, and yes, i did point out the tyres to him. Even going so far as taking him out for a 'hot lap' to emphasis the point! Anyway, after he had owned it for about three or four weeks i asked him how he was getting on with it. He says that he loves it, he's having a great time with it and it's better in every way to his 2006 Kia Picanto which the Scirocco has replaced. After the ebay experience with the Alpine, this was good to hear, a happy customer! Anyway he says he plans to keep it as long as he can, but he says that should i turn up with a cheap 2.8 Capri, he will then, and only then sell the Scirocco, and buy the Capri instead! Hmm... Cheap 2.8 Capri, do they even still exist? Now then, i really think it's time for another cuppa while you prepare yourselves for part three of this evenings updates...

In part 3 of this monsterous update of biblical proportions i'm going to start with the Carlton, now you may remember that back in May it failed it's MOT in spectacular fashion... ...later the MOT expector came out with a fistfull of failiure sheets! Sorry, he said, but it's bad! It IS bad! Actually it's far worse than probably even the MOT inspector thought! Once it was up on the table at Aunt Fannys we started to have a good prod around the Carlton, and the more we proded, the less we had to prod! So it's currently perched on a table looking very sorry for its self! Actually, in these two photos it doesn't look too bad, but underneath there's next to nothing left! So the first thing we did once it was up on the table was have a good prod around, this was followed by my friend and I sitting on the floor while i had a cry! My friend said to me that he would like to comfort me by saying not to worry, it's not too bad, but unfortunately he couldn't as it was really REALLY bad! I have to say that i am quite lucky in a way, because my friend understands that finding another one will be hard, and we might end up no better off, so he said, what shall we do? What's the plan? So i said that i really didn't have a clue, and asked him what he thought. He thought that what we should do is go out and find a nice V6 Omega, like this thing of beauty from last years 12 cars thread... Chop the body off the Omega, chop the floor out of the Carlton, then glue them back together with the hot sparkly stick! I sat there, letting his words of wisdom penetrate my feeble brain, before saying, ok, lets have a measure up! Before too long we had the measurements for the Carlton, Starting with, what i consider to be the most important measurement, the wheelbase which was about 105 inches. The car itself is about 182 inches long, and 68 inches wide. Good, now we have something to work from we thought, right, go out and find an Omega to measure! It took a while, but eventually after driving around all the carparks in town i spotted an old guy filling up at the petrol station. I pulled in and wandered up to the old fella and asked him if he would mind if i measured his car up? He was a bit dumbfounded and my request, but he said that it would be ok. Good, so, out with the tape measure. The all important wheelbase was 107.5 inches, the length was about 193 inches, and the width was about 70 inches! Good, so as expected the Omega is bigger everywhere. Back at base we looked long and hard at the difference in measurements. It was decided that we could chop 2.5 inches from the middle of the car to get the wheelbase right. With that removed there would only be another 8.5 inches to lose from the over all length of the floorpan, which should be easy enough, most of that would probably be lost from the boot to be fair! And this just leaves the difference of 2 inches in width, and this, it was decided just meant that the wheels would fill the arches better! So that was the plan. And it was a good plan, it meant that it would have a V6 engine with plenty of power, decent brakes, decent suspension, it was going to be just epic! Then i had a thought, if we did this, would it not need a BIVA? We discussed this at length over a bit of a brew, and after a bit of research we thought that it probably would need a BIVA... Oh BOVVER!! But worse than that, it seemed a sketchy area to chop the floor pan out of one car, and weld it in place in another. I probably have this wrong, and hopefully if you know better you'll tell me, but it looked like if we weld the floorpan from an Omega into my Carlton, it may not even pass a BIVA test? We thought some more, did a bit more research, and finally my friend said, "But who would know? What MOT inspector is going to look under there and go, no, thats not a Carlton floorpan, thats the floorpan from an Omega?" I must say that he's got a point, i mean who would know (apart from you guys obviously!), how would they find out? If we did a good enough job, once it was all welded, seam sealed, and painted under there nobody will know that it's not a Carlton will they? But, the trouble was that by now i was starting to think that i didn't want it to be an Omega underneath anymore, i wanted it to be a Carlton. Something will be lost from the driving experience if it's too good! I can't beleive that i'm writing this, but i want it to be more of a restoration, so it's as it left the factory... Well, more or less! So after all that research and discussion we were back to where we started, with a very rusty Carlton, and wondering where we go from here! A list was made that looked more like a scroll of work we needed to do. We then turned to the body, removed all the glass carefully. Then turned our attention to the rusty body panels! I said to my friend that as we are going down the resto route, i wanted it done properly, so any rust we found was to be chopped out, and filled with fresh steel. Any panels that were rusty would be replaced. Before too long it was apparent that i was going to need a new bonnet, front wings, valence, doors, sills (obviously), rear arches, the lower edge of the rear wings, and a new tailgate might be good too. However the good news is that the roof is fine! Currently i have located most of the parts in either very good, rust free condition, and in some cases, brand new! However, none of these parts are in the UK, they are all spread across mainland Europe. I'm thinking, roadtrip! Probably with a trailer, lets just hope it goes better than my first attempt at towing a trailer across Europe! This brings us on to the last bit of my update. The Fiat! Now, i'm nowhere near ready to sell this little car, and i absolutely love driving it, it handles superbly, and goes like the devil. It is an absolute blast to drive! I really do believe that as a track day toy this would be phenomenal fun! They sell for next to nothing, and they're just brilliant, far better than the Golf or Scirocco! So but after selling the Alpine, and the Scirocco, i had the bit firmly clenched between my teeth. So while it's got a couple of months MOT on it, it's got to go! DAMMIT! So on to the bay of e it went where i figured that it will probably sell for peanuts! If indeed it actually managed to find a buyer who wasn't going to mess me around! Three days into the auction i still had no bids! A 90's Fiat parked at a murder scene no less Parking it at a murder scene probably didn't help, but stupidly i didn't notice that when i took the photos lol! Something needed to be done, no one was even looking at my little Fiat, so i posted a link for a Cheap, and fun runabout in the Ebay and Elsewhere bit on this very forum. Didn't mention it was a Fiat in the hope that people would look first, and judge later! Oh that's a nasty trick, not telling people what it is and making them look at a FIAT! It worked ha ha! I had a bidder, and then another one, and another... It was taking it's time but with about two days left to go i was up to a massive £50! Which wasn't enough frankly, but i was hoping for a mad flurry at the end! I now had a few different bidders, and a fair amount of watchers! I started to wonder which one of my potential winners was going to be the one who messed me around, but i shouldn't have worried, because it was to be none of them. Instead i was blind sided, and ebay decided they would mess me around instead, and ended my listing! WHY?!! I said in dispair, why when i'm not being messed about by buyers, why has Ebay done this to me? Probably because it was going too smoothly! But here's the email i got... We've determined that some of your listings haven't followed our Brand Name Misuse policy. Therefore, we had to take the following actions:- Listings that didn't follow our policies have been removed. Adding brand, celebrity, or manufacturer names to a listing that was not made by that company, person, or manufacturer isn't allowed. We have credited all associated fees except for the final value fee for your listing! WHAT!? I had no idea this was not allowed, besides, i'm not sure i have mislead anyone, They're all Fiats, and they all use the Fiat The Type Two platform that was a front wheel drive platform which was designed by the Fiat Group and used during the late 1980s, 1990s and early 2000s for a range of Alfa Romeo, Fiat and even Lancia models. The Type Two platform introduced the concept of a "modular" platform, allowing the Fiat group to assemble various models from the same floorpan with some special modifications. It uses four-wheel independent suspension, composed of MacPherson struts at the front and trailing arms at the rear. Ok so maybe the Punto, the Panda, and the Strada might be a bit of a stretch but i'm pretty sure it's under the Bravo, Brava, Marea, Multipla, Tipo, Stilo, and various other Fiats, plus many more Alfa Romeos, and Lancias. But as ever there's no way of arguing with ebay as they won't let you contact them in any way shape or form. So instead i had to just suck it up, and move on. However, i did call my credit card company and instruct them that when ebay put in for their fees this month they were not to pay them. I told them that they had cancelled my listing and as such they should not be paid for it. My credit card company agreed, and told me that ebay would not be paid for this listing! Yay, it's a small win, but a win never the less! Of course ebay will probably cancel my account, and i'll be thrown off ebay altogether so it'll probably end up by being a Pyrrhic victory for me, but its a victory never the less! I wish i could say that i hated this car, but i don't, i just love it. It's 1.8 litre Twin Cam engine whizzes away under the bonnet, and makes it quite a fun little car to drive, every time i take it out i find that it's a better car than i thought the last time i took it out, it's just brilliant. Yes it's a little scruffy, but it's not rusty, it's just the laquer is all peeling off! If i had plenty of cash, and a massive wharehouse where i could keep my favourite cars, then this one would be one of the cars i'd keep forever! I wouldn't even bother finding a tidy example, i'd keep this one! But time, space, and needing the cash for the Carlton all mean that in reality, it's got to go! But, it would seem that due to being a Fiat, and a particularly unloved Fiat at that, that it's not going to sell for any proper money. Therefore i have decided that i shall just keep it until the MOT runs out, then its back onto fleabay as spares or repair due to the crack that it has in the windscreen! And here endeth my massive update. Thanks for reading!

Do you remember the Queen interrupting our roast turkey dinners one year to tell us about her horrible annus?
I think 2016 has given you a horrible annus too!
