Today was MOT day for the old Scrappage Scheme Survivor, and i don't know about you lot, but for me the MOT always fills me with dread. I don't think it's so much what will they find, i'm ok with that because i want my car, whatever it is to be in as safe condition as possible. But i do worry about how much they'll find, and will i be able to fix it, or will i be able to afford to get someone else who knows what they're doing to fix it? Anyway, after the fiasco with last years MOT when i stupidly took it to Kwik-Fart only to find that actually you can get better than a Kwik-Fit fitter, so this year i decided not to make that mistake again, and i took it to the same place it visited last year, BEST autos, in Winchester. It was a fairly young fella (well, younger than me anyway!) who carried out the MOT, and before too long he was done with it, and said that this was the first Talbot he'd ever MOT'd, and the first one he'd even seen!! (told ya he was a young fella!) He remarked on how solid it looked, and how it seems to be in quite good condition for it's age. Although it has clearly been welded, but what 30 year old car hasn't? He reckoned it would be good for a good few years yet, and issued it with a clean bill of health! So another years worth of happy Talbot motoring for me now that i got me a new MOT. Or will it be... You see, on my way home i took a little detour to collect some supplies from my local Homebase store. When i got back out and walked to the Talbot there was a fella looking at it, and taking a few photos. Ok, nothing too unusual there, it's an odd old car that you don't see everyday, so i found a few people have photographed it in the past. So we have a little chat, it was the normal stuff, how long you had it, whats it like, so on, and so fourth. Then he said, how longs the MOT? I said, i just got a fresh one today. So he says, great, wanna sell it? He then offers me too much for it, not, way too much, but just too much! Now, if your following my other saga, the Twelve Cars In A Year saga here on Retro Rides You'll know that i am currently out of pocket to the tune of nearly £1000 this year. Which is not ideal by any stretch! And to be honest i have been umming and ahhing over wether or not i should sell this. The thing is, i like it, i really like it, but i'm just not using it enough at the moment to warrant hanging on to it (plus, i've also got a Chrysler Alpine, and a Simca 1307 that i've not used in years as well, therefore i've effectively got THREE of these!), and a man waving a wad of cash in your face sure can help to focus your mind. However i was, at the time riding a bit of a high from it's MOT pass, and i was planning on taking it for a bit of a run tonight, which i did, and it was great. I do enjoy driving this little car, but maybe it's time to just let someone else have a go with it? I don't know, but i took his number, and told him that i'd let him know either way by the end of the weekend. Decisions, decisions!

Sell it... well maybe. It's very easy for me to say that, because we didn't get Talbot's over here and there's no nostalgic or emotional attachment. But after the 12 cars project is over, will you still want it? Are you only holding on to it for sentimental reasons? If you had to get it back or get another one, could it be replaced for the same as you sold it for?

Sell it. You've ticked the box and scratched the itch. If you let her go now , you know she goes to a guy that genuine likes her and is going to enjoy the beast, in stead of an unknown fleabay buyer with lousy feedback. And it saves an advert and money spending getting it sold.

The thing is sciclone i do still have an Alpine in two other flavours, albeit both in project form. I have a Simca 1307 which is left hand drive, and still french registered, and my original one which is pictured earlier on in this thread which is a Chrysler Alpine, having this Talbot Alpine effectively means i have the set lol! But i am leaning towards selling it, i bought it because my little girls wondered what they were like after looking at photos of my automotive back catalogue, plus i thought that it would help me to get my mojo back and get on with my first one, which it has to an extent. Which is good. Plus as dikkehemaworst says i've scratched that itch... Possibly, but like you say, if i sell it to this fella who obvioulsy wants it it does save the ebay fees and hassles. Which i must admit, is very appealing! I'll take it out over the weekend for an evaluation to see if i can let it go. I must admit, at this point i am still not wholley sold on the idea of selling it, but it's probably 60/40 toward selling it, sorry tedmunds But we'll see... The other thing of course is that if i sell it, that does free up some space (which i don't have) for this, my latest addition to the fleet, a 1996 Toyota Rav4. Stand by for a few pretty pics:- Readers of my other automotive ramblings will know that this was one of the stars of my Twelve Cars In A Year thread, it was the August car, car #8a! The thing is i really quite like driving it, and so does Mrs Pistonpopper, So instead of trying to sell it, and obviously losing yet more money i figured that we might as well keep it (for now) as we likes it so much. Of course keeping this little beauty can only mean one thing... Even less time to play with the Alpine, so really i rekon i should sell it, and let someone else have a turn. Damn, damn DAMN!! Why don't i have my own barn so i could store all my cars!! That really would be the answer!

Sell it. Easy for me to say as I am well known for not getting attached to cars.
I've only had my CL500 AMG a week and if someone offered me what it was worth and he wasn't a knob, I'd sell in a heartbeat.
To me, the thrill of my 'Toy' (I don't need a car, I drive maybe 500 miles a year tops) is in the chase, all the decision making, the dreams of how it will drive etc etc.
Currently, my Toy makes me feel 'Special' when I get in it and no doubt when that feeling goes, i will sell it. (For now though I am loving it - 75k car for under 10% of the price!)
So to summarise.. SELL SELL SELL - Then have fun finding a 'TOY', not a new daily. You have the Rav for that.

Sell it... SELL SELL SELL - Then have fun finding a 'TOY', not a new daily. You have the Rav for that. lol... Indeed PROCRASTINATION prə(ʊ)ˌkrastɪˈneɪʃ(ə)n noun the act or habit of procrastinating, or putting off or delaying, especially something requiring immediate attention. I procrastinate a lot, i don't know why i do it, because it never does me any good. Generally i go from procrastinating to knee jerk reactions. This as a rule is not good, but it's often how my car choices are made, i procrastinate, miss out, then have a knee jerk reaction and buy something else. Sometimes it works well for me, and sometimes it doesn't. For the second time this month my procrastination has meant that i've missed out on opportunities. On my other automotive thread of drivel i missed out on a gorgeous Mercedes due to my dithering! Don't worry though, if you want to have a look at that smokeem bought it lol! and on this here thread i missed out on selling my Alpine (well, one of my Alpines!) You may remember that a couple of weeks ago i told you of a fella who tried to buy my Alpine from me in the car park of my local Homebase store. well i should've taken his hand off, but i told him i'd think about it. Eventually i decided that he could have it, so i called him up, we had a little chat about it, he came out to look at it, but then decided that it wasn't for him after all, apparently he's decided to buy himself a Cortina... Yawn... BORING lol! Each to their own i guess! Still, i can't decide if i'm happy or sad about this. I was 60% leaning towards selling it, but i guess i'm ok about keeping it really. With the Twelve Cars In A Year saga drawing to an end i should have more time to play with my other cars, including this one, so perhaps it's for the best that i'm keeping it. Hooraaaaay!! (I think!)

Keep it. You know you'll regret it once it's gone. You still have your first one 20 odd years later!!! I love talbots. I have a few sambas. They're just too thin on the ground to part with. My love for the marque comes from my father. I will and do drive anything as a daily, and follow no fashions. My father drove nothing but Simca, Chrysler and Talbot for donkeys years. All my childhood memories were in them. I have some pictures which I'll copy and post at some point. Dad told me they were cheap to buy and run back in the day. 3 year old versions of the various models were much cheaper than other mainstream competitors models. That's why he bought them. He kept them for a couple of years and bought another 3 year old one. His last one was a late solara rapier or minx. Lovely thing. He fitted it with the exact same 13" alpine sport rims Mr popper has in storage (came off an old Orange and black sport years before). The Talbot marque ceased and we no longer had them as family transport. My father now has no love for any one manufacturer. He has never actually had the same affinity since. Listing his cars since reads something like this. 2 yr old Fiat uno 55S. 3 year old 626 gls with full twr body kit. 3 yr old sierra glsi. Hyundia pony (how and why?!!). Volvo. 3 yr old last model escort estate. 306 diesel. Polo. Fabia. Merc c220. There's been a few others in between I've forgotten, and he's had the merc now for years. For whatever reason he's never had the same link with any particular marque. Keep it. You know it makes sense!!

I know what you mean faker , there's something about old Talbots, they're not particularly good, but they get under your skin, and as you say they're cheap. Incidentally PSA Peugeot Citroën considered resurrecting the name and re-introducing Talbot to the market in 2008. They planned to target low-budget buyers, much like Renault have done with its Dacia brand. It was suggested that these could be models produced in China such as Talbot versions of the Citroën Elysée and of the Peugeot 206, but they did not make a comeback because PSA Peugeot Citroën introduced the second-generation Citroën C-Elysée and the Peugeot 301 instead. Anyhoo, when i got my first one it was bought for me by my Dad for managing to finally get my crêpe together and pass my driving test, it cost him just £200, and it was immaculate inside and out, and ran like a dream when i originally got it! But, being a stroppy teenager i was very un-impressed by this car, and hated it! Now, you may wonder why i hated my Chrysler Alpine? Well, it just wasn't what i wanted, not even close. Oddly what i wanted was this:- This was the car i learned to drive in, a 2.0 litre Vauxhall Carlton Automatic! I loved driving that thing, but it wasn't mine, and, now that i had my own car, i had no excuse to drive the Carlton anymore. So i hated my Chrysler Alpine, which in all fairness, was in great shape! Also they were so much cheaper than what my friends were driving, Cortinas, and Marinas etc, they were spending £500 or £600 on their cars which were a little bit tatty, and i could get hold of a blinder of an Alpine for just £200, and the Alpines were always of a far higher trim level... Idiot child i was! Bizarrely after a few of my friends drove my Alpine a few of them converted from their Ford and BL products, and joined me on the dark side! By the way, that Carlton at the time would cost me somewhere about £1000, and probably as much to insure it. I really was better off with the Alpine! But funnily enough, the lust for the Carlton never left me, and for a good few years i have been searching for that particular car, PLD 813W, but with no luck. It dawned on me that by now it had probably been turned into baked bean tins, so i decided to just find another one if i could, and try to build myself the Carlton i would've had back in the day, so i posted this:- I was looking on howmanyleft and it dawned on me that there are very few Carltons left on the road. So I have decided to try and resurrect one, and get it back on the road. I've asked around my friends who are all pretty talented in different areas of car restoration and repair, and they're all up for it if I am able to find one! So this is what I'm looking for, it needs to be an estate from 1978–86, nothing else will do, and it needs to have documents, as I want to be able to know for sure it's not stolen. Sorry, but I always get a bit nervous when a car is offered without documents. Oh, and I'd rather it hadn't been in an accident, as I can cut out rust and weld in New steel, but I don't know how to go about straightening a car that's very bent. Obviously if the damage is confined to a panel etc thats ok, but bent floor pans and buckled bodies would be a no go for me as i wouldn't know where to begin straightening it out. Apart from that I don't care how rusty the body etc is, as I can get it welded up. I don't care if the engine doesn't work as I've got in mind a later, or different power source! It would be a bonus if the interior was good though, especially the plastic bits. So does anyone know where something like this is lurking, waiting for a new home? I figured that we're a pretty big community, and so I thought that maybe the best way of finding one is to ask if anyone has one hidden away in a lock up or something. Of course, in the highly unlikely event that someone, owns, or knows of, or has seen my old car in their travels (the one in the photo) that would be a huge bonus. This car is a two litre Vauxhall Carlton estate, registration number PLD 813W, and i guess i must've sold it around 20ish years ago from the Winchester area. The last time I saw it, it was still wearing its original light metallic blue paint work, and was driving through Southampton. According to the DVLA website its not been taxed since 1995 so I'm guessing that it's long gone to the great scrapyard in the sky, but i'm hoping that it's still out there somewhere. If you happen to have it (or one like it) lurking in your garage, or maybe know someone who does, please let me know. Thanks in advance. Still nothing, i knew there must be a few still out there, i just didn't know where. In the end, i found this mk2 Carlton estate, and snapped it up as i had started to believe that finding a mk1 Carlton estate in any condition just wasn't going to happen, and finding this mk2 Carlton estate was as good as it was going to get. The trouble was, as good as it is, and make no mistake it is a good car, it's not quite what i was looking for. It is in absolutely superb condition, but to me, it felt like i was listening to the 'B' side, you know its the same group, but it's just not quite as good as the song you bought the single to hear if you know what i mean! The mk2 is still a beautiful car in my opinion, but as Roy Walker, from the TV game show 'Catchphrase' would say, "It's good, but it's not right!" I can't believe that it's not close enough either, i'll never, EVER find a better Carlton i reckon, but it's not the one i'm looking for. Sometime ago i had a really, REALLY nice Volvo 240GL, it was very very tidy, and i have this friend who was very interested in it, except he was looking for a Volvo 244, not a 240. Now, i don't know what the difference is between a Volvo 240, and a Volvo 244, and bizarrely neither did he, but his Dad had a Volvo 244 when he was a kid, and so it had to be a Volvo 244. I thought he was crazy not to have this 240, and i really didn't understand why he didn't want it, but he said it had to be a 244. At the time i really didn't get it... But now, having had this, i can see what he's saying, it's a good car, yes, but it's not the right one... I've definately lost the plot! Needless to say i am very dissapointed with myself for not liking this enough, i don't know why i don't like it, but i don't. When you put it up against the Vauxhall Omega i had earlier in the year... I'd have the Omega, and i even considered hanging on to it, it was a great car, and i probably liked it enough to take the place of a mk1 Carlton Estate in my little collection... I still think about having one even now! When i found the Mk2 Carlton i thought that it would have all the bits of the Mk1 Carlton that i like, plus all the bits of the Omega that i like, but it just doesn't. So the search for a Mk1 Carlton goes on... Until... Early in November after purchasing my mk2 Carlton i get this email from the editor of Retro Cars no less! It read:- "I came across your post lusting after a Vauxhall Carlton Estate and wanted to let you know that we're selling ours. It's been a Classic Car Buyer magazine run about for the past 6 years and has been round Europe on a rally. We've given it a lot of time and attention to keep it running well and MoT'd etc. it's been almost 100 percent reliable and is loved by the whole office, but it's time to pass it on as we've got far too many cars here and want to buy more!" So we conversed for a bit and i tried to arrange a time when i could just get away from work for a day, and pop along to have a look at it. Tuesday the 24th of November was that day. So, i told Mrs Pistonpopper that i was going to be out all day, as i was going to look at a car in Peterborough. She informed me that nobody hires a transporter, which i had parked outside, and drives 140 odd miles to Peterborough to just look at a car. Hmm, she had a point. So on that bombshell... Some very pleasant chatter was had, and for a very reasonable fee, it was mine... ALL MINE!!! YAY!!!!! It was loaded up, and John and the staff at Kelsey Publishing said their goodbyes, and i was off home again... With my new toy!! Sure it's a little bit scruffy, but it's solid, it runs, drives etc, and is ready to go... Once i tax it! I was quite surprised how similar they both are in size, i really thought the mk2 would've been bigger! The truth is that the Mk2 Carlton is far and away a better car, and it's a better car in every single way. Except for, i prefer the looks of the Mk1, i know the changes were pretty subtle but for me the Mk2 was just too slippery, too aerodynamic, too refined! Maybe the mk2 Carlton is just too good! For me, the Mk1, this Mk1 is better, i don't know what it is about it that makes it better, i just can't put my finger on it. It's like my Talbot, you know there are better cars out there, but you like it inspite of that. I actually look forward to getting into the Mk1, and doing a bit of work to it... So what are my plans for it? Well i'll probably start with a good old fashioned de-stickering, and see what lurks beneath all those stickers on the bonnet! Other than that:- I've managed to snag myself a set of Opel Manta 'B' series wheels for it... Doc Brown and Marty McFly aren't the only ones to have a hovver car! Here it is hovvering, waiting for it's new wheels to be fitted! Fitted! (Sorry for the terrible quality photo! Must try harder!) I reckon they look alright on it. Could probably do with a tap with the lowering stick while i'm at it! I like it...

Agreed my friend, I don't want it too low as I think it starts to look silly if it's stupidly low. Plus, with all the speed bumps around here it becomes a pain in the bum to drive it, and does kinda suck the joy out of it a bit.
