Hello all, As the title says i'm just a bit scared and in need of some advise. I sold my old work truck last friday to a couple of fellas who bid on it on ebay, and won it. they then came down, and haggled with me, and offered me £750 less than they won it from me on ebay for. We argued for about an hour, they test drove it, had a good look around it, and carried on haggling. But i was having none of it, so in the end, i said forget it, and started to walk off towards the house. They then said fair enough mate, and gave me the money, and told me to count it, which i did rather stupidly by holding the end of the wad of noted, and quikly counting the other end. We then signed the paperwork, and they headed off, smoking the tyres of my old work truck the length of the street as they left! I then went inside, and counted the money properly, only to find i was £160 down where they had folded some of the noted in half which meant i counted it twice! That annoyed me!
Anyway, later that night i got a phone call from them saying that the truck wouldn't start! They were very unhappy about this, and wanted to know what was wrong with it. I was at a bit of a loss to be fair, because if driven about 8,000 miles in it and never had any problems at all. So i told them that i didn't know as i've never experienced any problems with it. Apparently it's ok when it cold, but once the engine is warmed up it refuses to start on the key, the engine turns over freely, but it wont start, although apparently if they tow it, it will bump start! Incase this helps, its a 2008 2.5litre TDCi Ford Ranger. They then said that they were going to take it to a garage, and have them look at it, and they'd get back to me.
Well, i'd not heard from them until tonight, some four days after they picked it up. This is the bit that i need advise on, as i'm not a car dealer, and i'm not really sure what i should do. So they rang me up, and said that their mechanic can't find a problem with it, as it doesn't throw up any fault codes, but they said that where they've been trying to start it, now the immobiliser has packed up, and this is a problem only the main dealer can fix because the truck only came with one key? I don't really understand, but there you go. Then they said that they wanted their money back as the truck doesn't work. To which i replied that when they bought it from me, it was working, and it worked fine. But it is an old truck with 160,000 miles on it, so stuff may go wrong with it at any time. But after another hour or so, we were just going around in circles as they want to bring my truck back to me and get their money back, Actually at first they said i needed to come and collect it and bring them their money back! I was actually starting to feel quite threatened by what they were saying. They then said that i didn't want 30 odd gypsies turning up and demanding their money back, and to be honest, this has frightened me a bit, and i don't know what to do. Obviously i don't want any trouble, but also, there was nothing wrong with my truck when they drove away with it... Also of course, when the deal was done, i mailed the documents to the truck to the DVLA, so if i did take the truck back, they would still have the documents when the DVLA send them to them! Any thoughts, or words of wisdom, i am genuinely quite worried about this. Strangely enough when they showed up before we even talked about the truck i had a feeling that i shouldn't have sold the truck to them, i wish had gone with my gut reaction first!

Well I think the main rule of any sale on eBay is 'sold as seen'. I'm guessing you described the add as a working truck and when they tested the truck like you say it was working no problem. You've not done anything wrong because end of the day once a deal has been made it has been made. They tested the truck and knew what they was buying so really it's not your fault that the truck has now packed in.
The fact they paid you £160 less anyway is a joke and this alone should be enough reasoning that they should pay to get the truck that they tested and paid for fixed. Don't let them bully you into doing as they say because if they do make a legitimate threat I would just tell the police!
It's a very tricky situation but you've done everything you should have on your part, if they were nice people and didn't shaft you £160 then obviously it could be a different story and you might feel some sympathy to the fact the truck has now packed in but as they're threatening you and sound very dodgy altogether I would just tell them tough. Hope you get this sorted mate!!

Sorry to hear your story, they sound like foul people.
From what you have said, you have done nothing wrong and the problem is entirely theirs. They owe you £160. You owe them nothing.
You should report threatening and anti-social behavior using 101. Don't downplay it, they have made serious threats.
Unfortunately you can't apply logic or reason to these people. Stay safe, I hope the problem is solved without incidence.

Report to police and hope for the best. Its a pretty standard traveller scam, if you do end up with it back check it over with a fine tooth comb.

PM sent We had something similar a couple of years ago, I wish I had CCTV installed before the sale ended as we've had a few strange things happen since then (including one incident on the night I left negative feedback on Ebay - it might have just been a coincidence ) Hope you get things sorted.

Report to police and hope for the best. Its a pretty standard traveller scam, if you do end up with it back check it over with a fine tooth comb. Just for info - we tried this when our problems started. Police told us that if we knew who was responsible an officer would go and ask them for their version of events, otherwise the authorities could do nothing. Hopefully your local bobbies are more useful Unrelated ... I had frequent problems with a local drunk trying to get into my house when the nightclubs closed I got to the stage of ringing the police in advance when I knew they were out drinking in my area, so I could ring 999 if/when I got a surprise "visitor" at 4am ! The system worked fairly well...

Cut the loss, tell them sold as seen If they threaten you call the law and record any messages voicemails and hand them over I had a kinda similar when I sold my Toyota Monster truck on fleabay 6 huge guys turned up and decided to rip it to bits, and demand a huge discount, told them to f eck off. They got all boisterous, but I held my ground, Yes it was scary, but I'm a big chap, and told them if you don't want it go away, anymore s hit I will call the law They went away in the end, but still is the nastiest encounter Ive ever had

Sounds like sh1t dude:(
However I would be leaning towards calling their bluff.
Be firm with them, tell them had they not folded notes and shortchanged you then you'd be more willing to help.
If you take the van back you may get a ringer, sugar in the fuel tank, sand In the engine block. Its clear that at this point they'll just take the p1ss. Its more than likely had the engine swapped at the very minimum. Notify plod asap.

Just put your phone on record if they pay a visit, voicemails, texts anything send them to the local police, and tell them you are in fear of violence - that may kick them up a gear

Then you got off light Fred, thankfully.
I've been assaulted before over a refund being demanded after the car had been raced up the road and ruined. Was prevented physically from retreating to the house or calling police or family. 999 call responded 45 minutes after they'd left... With their refund. It ain't worth living in fear.
Unfortunately I am now also going through similar threats from someone I believe is on here and with a sort of similar story.
People like this have no moral compass or any second thought that prevents them from doing something they ought not to. They've made threats so you need to report those. Some people are just chancing it, some are genuinely best agreed with. If they are of the gypsy persuasion, there are two types, and having dealt with many over here, there is one type that start to make idle threats but then back off if you don't, the other ones will follow through. They talk the same and look the same, there is no way to know until you are nearing that critical mass point.
Being that the log book was filled in, does that mean you now have their address and name on a government held document?

It doesn't help you in this case but for future consideration - I always check the bidders just before the auction ends and remove any with dodgy / no feedback. So far I've never had any issues and I must have sold at least 40 cars doing this. Of course if someone is determined then they'll still get through though.

Sold as Seen, report them to the police. Change phone number.
How local are they?

Definitely give the pold a call to get their threats registered and logged just in case and iwould Google their address to see if it a exists and b is a travellers camp. As has already been said, record any threats from them if you can.
Personally I would call their bluff, but i can understand that is easy to say when it isn't you receiving the threats.

As others have said, report to the police, they've tried it on with you and haven't stopped.

You can't physically refund them until the V5 is with them for them to return the vehicle.
Also the fact the immobiliser is now faulty smells to me like it's been curse word with or they've made a copy of the key to drive it away with later. Is the ECU tied to the immob?
If you're worried then lock up the house and, remove all valuables and go stay with a family member. Or invite a few burly mates to come hang out at your house, if anyone comes knocking they can say you don't live there and they've never heard of you.
Don't be bullied into being another statistic, they could be just be trying their luck.

Word that springs to mind is BULLIES , rather than gypsy
We have a local gypsy camp , most are fine and want to fit in to the community
A quick call of the police may fetch up previous bullying from the same gang
Good luck

First of all when you sell a car like that always issue two receipts (can be hand written) marked Sold as Seen and signed by both parties. You keep one, they keep one.
These people are scum, but stand your ground. Report them to both the Police and eBay (so far they have committed theft and threatening behaviour) although don't hold out much hope in plod. We caught our local scum stealing scrap batteries, spooked him (one bloke with his wife and toddler) so he legged it with two batteries, phoned plod, gave full description and plate of vehicle. Plod sent a kid in uniform who was clearly terrified at the prospect of confronting these people who took a statement and nothing more was done. They returned a few weeks later, this time three blokes, and we confronted them, they hurled threats, but nothing happened and they left empty handed.
Basically they'll feed off the weak. Be firm, not offensive, and if possible record any conversations. And next time follow your gut, walk away if chancers turn up and watch feedback on eBay, no bidders under 10 feedback etc.

Also this - make sure the receipts have the time/date on them & take a photo of the V5 before it's posted, you then have the buyers details incase there are any issues (fake cash, speeding tickets on way home)
