Arrghh, Vectras have those idiot touch sensitive stalks. We hired one in France to watch the Monte and spent 4 days confusing the locals. they don't cancel, so you touch up and it indicates right, try to centre and it indicates left. Maybe thats why people don't bother using them anymore... Ive heard about this. How do they cancel/turn off then? BMW M5 on Top Gear IIRC

The Vectra indicators take some getting used to but they're OK when you get used to them. Ever so slightly pointless though.
I'm glad somebody brought up modern light units though, I thought I was the only one! I've noticed that on some integrated headlamp/indicator units that when the headlights are on they sometimes light up the orange indicator element and it looks like the cars are indicating. Very rubbish.

You guys want to try driving here (US) as many cars have a shared (red) brake light/indicator. So, if someone starts to signal and is on and off the brakes as they come up to the turn you get all sorts of seemingly random lights flashing on and off with no real indication of what they are actually doing. I have explained that really badly. ;D i know what you mean, ive seen those on old dubs. they are pretty cool to see over here but totally confussing.atleast we've advanced from semaphores.

people indicating, humm, the main things that bug me is people that don't indicate when they turn off a roundabout because i could have gone and people that go all the way round with there left indicator on or indicate too early. a indication to early is about as much use as not at all. and mundaneos allways have miss matched bumpers and taped up curse word ect because there plastic egg shell like creations and they have terrible blind spots/ high boot line. plus the bumper are a PITA to change as all of the plastic gismos brake and the bolts holding the sponge curse word which is the actual bumper, on behind rust up. sorry for the rant but those two subjects boil my wee

I might as well moan about indicating while I'm here, what is it with people who don't indicate to turn right on roundabouts, but then do the left indicator to exit it? Obviously doing both is the proper option but surely if you're only going to do one it should be the one that would stop people pulling out in front of you! YES! I was going to bring this up, because it frustrates me to death. Fair enough if you're going to be a complete idiot and not indicate at all, but not indicating when turning right is absolutely idiotic. I still reckon all roundabouts should be abolished - they're a great concept, but the general public are just too stupid to use them properly. hehe, true in most places, down here in Victoria Aus, i have never seen one driver indicate when they want to exit a roundabout, infact i don't think we are even taught to. however i have been 1 place where roundabouts work awesome. New South Wales has a roundabout nearly at every corner in the suburbs around sydney, and the method of use is to aim at them at full road speed and be good enough to calculate whether the car coming in from the side will get through without you T-boning them, or if you will have to slow down a fraction. In the month i lived there i never went through 1 roundabout more then 10km under the speedlimit

I have explained that really badly. ;D that doesn;t bother me. I'm used to red signals. My old Morris Minor only had 6 bulbs in the whole car - 2 headlights, 2 front running lights / signals and the rear lights (brake, tail, signal) The only proplem is nowadays people don;t expect a dim-bright (or rather dim-dimmer) "flasher" to be an indicator so you signal and they ignore you. Mind you a lot of people ignore signals anyway. Just this morning I was boxed in my some bint in a big Skoda because she wanted to ride my rear quarter and not see that I was signalling to poull into her lane. Luckily I have the power to dust her off and cut the curse word up. (obviously I was in the Buick not the Mazda LOL) And what is it with the number of people driving round with only one brake light working. I told some lass at a traffic light once that it was obvious NEITHER of her brake lights were working and she just looked at me like I was curse word and wound her window up and ignored me. Jesus when some HGV goes in the back of you cos he didn;t know you were braking you'll be thinkig "I wish someone had told me the brake lights weren;t working"

and why do so many Mondeos have mismatched bumpers...are their drivers particularly accident prone? Is it impossible to judge the length of them or are they all just uninsured? That is actually strangely true, my GF's brother's mondeo has cracked bumpers front and back, and there's one near where I park that's been without a rear bumper at all for a few weeks. I told some lass at a traffic light once that it was obvious NEITHER of her brake lights were working and she just looked at me like I was curse word and wound her window up and ignored me. Jesus when some HGV goes in the back of you cos he didn;t know you were braking you'll be thinkig "I wish someone had told me the brake lights weren;t working" Yeah, it's actually quite scary how relaxed some people are to safety issues like that, and other things like maintenance. I wonder how often the average road user checks things like coolant and brake fluid levels? You guys want to try driving here (US) as many cars have a shared (red) brake light/indicator. So, if someone starts to signal and is on and off the brakes as they come up to the turn you get all sorts of seemingly random lights flashing on and off with no real indication of what they are actually doing. I have explained that really badly. ;D I think those are really cool, I can see how they would be confusing though when people are braking on and off.

I had the same tail lights on my '61 Beetle, when I was looking for a friends house I was getting lost and there was a car behind me so I indicated left and pulled in. The car behind stopped right behind me. "Why don't you f*'in indiate!" the mouth-breather shouts through the window Agree that some cars indicators are hidden by the other lights, it's a bit curse word really when you think they've had 40 years to come up with a good idea. Here's the most visible place for rear indicators, not only can you see them but you can see them through the windows of the car ahead. And they're stylish too I had a Vectra hire-car with the funny indicator stalk and spent a mile or two indicating left, then right, then left etc. Best summed up by sniffpetrol as "smart-arsed indicator stalk which attempted to reinvent a part of the car that has worked perfectly well for the past 50-odd years and was in no way crying out to be buggered about with" ;D

As to the front indicators on some modern cars they are petty bad, I've often thought this. When on my Hols in Florida in just amazed at there rear lights, when one bulb does the lot brake/indicate/tail light, so when they brake and indicate all hell seems to go on! but hey all red lenses do look cool.

Was racking my brains to remember the modern trash I almost rear ended because I couldn't see the indicator - Passat of course. They really are terrible........ I've lost count of the times I've almost rear ended a car that has no brake lights working over here ( or worse - permanently on, blinding all and sundry ). Best is when you tell them, and you get their response 'I know' !!!! WHAT - irresponsible pricks! You think roundabouts are bad there - try Belgium.... I've just spent 8months fighting a case over the 'priorite a droite' stupid ruling....... some nonce in a Zafira thought he'd hoon out in front of me - with me having priority, I clipped him, he was going so fast he bounced of 6 other parked cars - but swore blind it was my fault as I was a foreigner! To be fair - some junctions are marked give way - some not, so they never know until already there! Un-fooookin-believable!

New BMW stalks work as follows;
To indicate right;
Nudge up briefly for short flash - 3 times, for lane changing Push up and hold for 1 second for longer flash - cancelled by pushing up again

To answer the Mondeo bumper question, they crack for fun always have done, and Mondeos are now in the banger league so any bumper will do, up to a few years ago most people would have had the new bumper painted to match as the cars were still worth a bit of wedge.
Escorts are just as bad, but you have the option of getting two black ones which I suspect is what a lot of people do.

I know they are there, it's just no one else does but in 3 years of driving i've not been rear ended yet, although come quite close. My police story is I knew I had a headlight out so used my (weak) fullbeam. Pull up behind someone at lights so go back to normal lights so I don't blind them. Pull away ,Police go past otherway, do a u-turn, pull me over. Are you aware you only have one headlight? Oh really, no didn't know that ;D Ok could you put them on for us please. No worries officer, Pull light switch, and no lighting works what so ever, D-oh. Copper says he has a beetle too and knows what they are like and since I had got to my destination let me off, with a Get them fixed type of warning.

New BMW stalks work as follows; To indicate right; Nudge up briefly for short flash - 3 times, for lane changing Push up and hold for 1 second for longer flash - cancelled by pushing up again New Corsas have that too. I bloody hate it! What was so wrong with the way indicators worked before?! Personally, I can't even stand self-cancelling. The Metro rarely bothers and the two Citroens never even had it to start with!
