please bear with this first post, its a series of posts following my build:
been on the lookout for a new project for a long time now, something to sink my teeth into long term (once my bobber bike is finished)..
i knew i wanted some form of pickup and it had to be hotrod/ratrod (but safe and not tacky) themed. been building newer modifed cars for a fair few years now, along with a bike and helping out with a few other things. mechanical engineer by trade with some fabrication experience I'm after a challenge. me and a few friends have our own little workshop with a few tools and a spreay booth ect. also have access to a blast booth to make tarting things up alot easier. a rat model A came up online recently and it was everything i was after parts wise. steel (whats currently left of it) dropped axle/traditonal front, 350 chevy/ th350, new frame, 9 inch rear ect along with a few spares i was worried id struggle to obtain and a nice set of whitewalls, also came with clear title and relevant paperwork ect.
the shell itself has been chopped and stretched by previous owner, not been finished to the best standard and will definately be tidying up along with channeling over the chassis, luckily it was braced and nothing is too far out of line. i got it for the budget i allowed to find a base car and collected on tuesday,as this is my first rod build I'm gonna spend a few months gathering all the information i can along with some parts i need to make a start and get going.
i know ive got alot of work on my hands and alot of obstacles to overcome but I'm as excited as i am scared
once my summer bobber is done ill have a breather and get started on her.
immediate plans will be:
lower front end
build steering system
channel/ fix cab
new rear leaf string mounts
try to track down a door hinge kit (or fabricate my own if anyone has done this??)
extend pickup bed close to its original length
ect ect ect ect... haha
ill no doubt be asking you guys for advice aswell as sharing my progress!
i eventually finished my bobber build and began on the truck.
first thing really is get it sitting right, i like my cars low so it was never gonna stay a highboy. started out sitting like this, as you can see a good few miles off the floor..
decided to fabricate a taller spring perch and also "z" the chassis. started with the back while waiting for some steel for the perch.its still braced up and a few good stiches of weld, will be fully welding and adding fish plates once its all down sitting how i want..
from this..
to this :
as I'm going to be channeling the cab i cant keep the current axle setup so will be changing the rear suspension for a triangulated 4 bar with rose joints, keeping the rear leaf but adding additional shocks.
started today installing the front perch and getting ready to step the front of the chassis up to give it a nice stance, ive been bitten by some nasty insect on my hand and its swollen up to the size of a golf ball so my trusted bearded assistant is manning the grinder..
more tomorrow once ive get the front back on
btw, ill try and get some pics of my buddys fiesta in the background. running a bmw v8 engine and running gear..
been carrying on with the z chassis. pretty much finished so i dropped the body back on to see the height - pre channelled.
looking good i think!
after some shocks for the front setup next, just found myself a front grill so i can work out how much to move the engine forward aswell.
then things get stupid.... hello airbags..
Thats going to be its stance at full drop, apart from the back will be lifted slightly to get the body parallel to the floor, otherwise the pickup bed will be scraping the floor. the bags I'm running have a pretty big lift, when they are up it also gives it a pretty nice nose down stance and also has a fair big of ground clearance at the front. i will be rounding the corners off on the front "z" of the chassis and tubing the front rails. will look nice!
ive made sure it all sits within the scrub line at driving height which is the important bit imo.
knocked a few bits up while waiting for parts.
hated the original engine mounts, they just didnt look safe so made up a hurst style engine mount setup with speedway cushion mounts.
next up is starting on the rear axle. got the bags installed. decided to sink them into the chassis rails as on the inside they sat too close and on the outside they just came out too far. would need a very wide bed to fit them into and just wouldnt look right..
and..
here is the plan ive came up with, as i wanted to extend the rear part of the frame ive killed 2 birds with one stone by fitting these notches. allowing me to fit my battery and air equipment behind the axle.
all fitted now and will get pics up soon.
while i was waiting for some steel to come in ive started making my 4 triangulated 4 link setup. first item is the axle link mounts :
now ive got the chassis how i want it its time to strip it down. clamp down. measure, measure again and weld. including building the gearbox mount and fish plates ect. more pics soon..
found some inspiration online, hopefully will look similar to this one day...
got some more done on the chassis, welded up and fitted air bag mounts, took it over to my buddys workshop, used his chassis table, lots of clamping measuring and bracing. i will be putting a gusset on the mounts at some point in the future.
will also be added rear cross brace/braces in the chassis once ive sorted the 4 link setup and confirmed where everything is going.
also decided to raduis the front "z" of the frame. happy with how its came out. will be fitting a curved plate on the inside edge to mount the radius rods.
next up : transmisson mounts and framework. and 4 link setup.
got a back street heroes photoshoot tomorrow on the litle bobber ive built so decided to get the car out to give us some room if they want to use the wrokshop to do the shoot in. first time ive seen it out in the sun since i started work on it. I'm happy so far!
