Hi All, been a member for a while so thought I'd share my 1982 Polo GL , After doing a bit of digging I have discovered that this is the oldest remaining mk2 Polo currently on the road . I'm just waiting for some confirmation but we also think that it is the oldest remaining mk2 registered in the UK , its a 02/82 car which would of been a pre-ordered car by the original purchaser Model : February 1982 Volkswagen Polo GL Engine : HZ 1043cc (replacing HB 1093cc) , Weber 32tl carb , early single box exhaust system , HB engine inlet manifold , electronic ignitionSuspension : TA Technix shocks and springs 60/80
Brakes : VW I upgraded from early vw Wheels and Tyres : 13" Steels Exterior Styling/Modifications : Original NOS dealer option side decal Interior Styling/Modifications : Original 80's Alexander alfa steering wheel cover ICE and Security: Blaupunkt Ludwigshafen 18 Radio
I'd had the itch for an early Mk2 for a long time but the right car never came along until now . Its been in storage since 2006 now until I got it in July and it had quite a few jobs needing to be done before it was back on the road . -No Brakes Needed rear wheel cylinder-O/S window mech Replaced mechanism complete and used original glass-N/S door handle Repaired-Runs a bit rough (dirty fuel) Tank drained and Carb replaced/upgraded from Pierburg 1b3 to Weber 32tl-Several Lights not working Replaced bulbs-Blow on exhaust Discovered it was brand new but had been fitted incorrectly
All in all i'm so happy with it , body is solid with minimal rust for a 32 year old car After a few days work we put it in for a MOT and it flew through

That looks really nice indeed...
My Grandad had an early Mk2 Polo (a bright yellow saloon version) so these hold quite a special memory for me!
I look forward to seeing more of this car...

The plan was to garage this over winter and run my Scirocco or my other mk2 , That plan lasted all of 3 weeks and I picked it up and started using it again because I missed it . I've since fixed rear wiper , heated rear screen , leaking rear wash

Great little cars, my mum bought a Polo Fox new in 1991 ( she hated it because it was grey) It was a good deal though. She always complained about the brakes though, but that was due to the non servo assistance wasnt it, as there wasnt space when they were made right hand drive. (it also failed it first MOT on welding due to a rotten battery tray as the drain holes were blocked with protection wax!)
Loved the colour and the period bits getting but in!

Nice one. Good colour too. My Mum had one of these but in not such a fetching shade. That steering wheel glove is a right time-warp.

A very nice Polo, good to also see it hasn't gone down the usual 'VW scene' route.

looking good - classy car What steveo said. The brakes do take some getting used to due to the lack of servo. However, at under 750kg these are very lightweight cars and the brake dimensions are fairly reasonable. Correct adjustment of the rear drums is the key to a decent pedal and to get the best out of them. VW didn't even increase the brake dimensions on the MK2F when it came out in 1990, just a servo was added for a lighter pedal. In good order they'll be fine - they just need a firm push - you'll soon get used to them, as long as you don't have a Citroen CX as another daily driver! Check the battery tray, back end of the sills and filler neck for corrosion. It does seem as a rule of thumb that the early cars are far less prone to rust than the later models, particularly the MK2F. I like the later VW steels and the alloys you have fitted in some of the pics in equal measure, really subtle. The interior looks exceptionally good, often the seat trim and door cards wear very badly on this era of Polo. Pleeeeease DON'T put a roof rack full of tat on or sticker bomb the dash etc etc or I'll have to slap you around the face with a wet fish!!! A lovely early car this, keep us posted. Cheers, Richard.

yeah its all about the drum ajustment , i take out a wheel bolt and tweak the ajuster a bit more so they just bind with one click on the hanbrake
then get used to braking from the hip with your whole leg rather than at the ankle lol

Thanks for the comments Ian , My '91 Polo CL is Grey metallic . I was told that the early ones had 8kg of ziebart protection . checked all the drains on this just to make sure I don't encounter any problems in the future

That has to be one of the best condition old vw I have seen for ages, was it originally a pierburg?
I swapped the pierburg for a weber 32/34 dmtl on my 1.3 mk2 golf and it's the best thing I have ever done to it!

Thanks Richard, the interior is in really good condition. Actually bought the car without seeing it other than some pictures that had been taken about 4 years previous when it was rolled out of storage for a MOT so was over the moon when I took delivery of it
