Glad to see your engine is okay!
If it is a Lucas distributor there are/were kits that convert it to run Bosch type points which are still of good quality which is more than can be said of the Chinese made Lucas type points on the market.
That said there is a good chance that the points will have been fried by a dead condenser. These can just give up or be killed by badly sooted plugs or broken down HT leads. HT leads are easy to test with a multi-meter set in resistance mode. You are looking for a resistance of under 6.5kΩ. New condensers can also be of questionable quality.
I can recommend the Accuspark kits as linked to above, I've done thousands of miles in several cars with those kits fitted and put them on as a matter of course. I've never had any trouble with them.
