Hello I've got a 1982 renault trafic t800 camper with the 1.4 petrol engine and it's very slow I was just wondering if anyone knows what other engines I can fit that will give it abit more power I only payed £450 for it and after abit of welding it's now taxed and mot'd and used it a couple of times but you get a lot of funny looks when cars are passing you when your going up hill at 10mph Thanks ant

It might be worth getting the engine thoroughly serviced and tuned up as it doesn't seem right that it could be that slow...!!!

When these were new you could have either a 1.4 or a 1.7 petrol engine (there were a couple of Diesels too) so you could try and find a 1.7 unit and breathe on it for a bit more poke...
Fitting the 1.7 unit will involve a bit of 'tickling' to the front end as it pokes out a bit but as long as you get everything from the 1.7 van (different grille and bumper) you should be ok...!
I hope it all goes well, please do keep us posted...

I can't help with possible engine-swap, I'm afraid. However, we test-drove a diesel Trafic camper of similar era about 8 years ago. Even that wasn't at all lively, even on the flat. I daren't think what it would be like on a hill.
I hope some Reno-phile can advise you on possible upgrades.

Volvo 480 1.7 turbo lump would be good too, but I'd look at newer stuff - could run a 16v lump on ecu or multi carbs (1.4/1.6/1.7/1.8/2.0)
Or even a V.A.G lump with a Passat/A4/A6 fwd transaxle gearbox if you're handy in the workshop.

I drove the Trafic with the high roof with the 1.4 (8v Cleon engineer) 1.7 (8v F-type engine) and 2.2 engines. The 2.2 petrol is the best option and is used in the years of your Trafic series. This engine is used also used in the R21. I remember the 1.4 to be slower than a snail. Just dangerously slow.
So there is loads of Renault options: cleon engines, such as the R5 GTT engine. F-type engines, Clio 1.8 16v or even 2.0. With the 2.2 option you could even go for the 2.0 turbo engine from the R21 turbo.
Because the Trafic was used over a long period and parts are cheap I would stick with a Renault engine.

My dad had a few traffics back in the day. All 1.7's, they weren't to slow but topped out about 65mph if I remember correctly. I know he straight fitted a Volvo 340 engine in one of them when the Cambelt snapped. Same engine I believe.

2.2 is a J-type engine variant. They also did do a 2.0 version and a 12 valve version. The 8v F-type also has a 2.0l variant which makes it a bit more confusing.
Thinking about it, there is aven an 1.6 Cleon variant produced in South-America for a Ford/VW.

I'm not familiar with the early traffic vans. Do they have the engine inline in front of the gearbox as on the Mk 1 & 2 Espaces..?? If so, I've got some parts that may be of help. I've just scrapped my '93 Espace that I've used for the last 18 years. It is a 2 litre petrol (I'll find out exact engine description). I saved the engine and box and just the engine from a 'spares car' I had. The engine in mine has done 140,000 miles and ran well. The gearbox is OK too. The engine out of the spares car is available too. That had done 112,000 miles and ran well but has stood for some time. They are both injection 2 litres and the injection bits for both are there but dismantled from the engines. I was going to run one on carbs in a SIMCA 1000 track car but have Just been offered a ready prepared car for that. The wiring loom has been cut in places when the cars were dismantled. I had worked out that a Talbot Samba distributor I have would fit to supply 'old school' ignition to adapt theses engines to carbs. Mick
