Still not taken any good photos. Fail. I pulled the front apart this weekend to deal with the leaking transmission cooler pipes and also fit a bigger cooler to deal with the truck being old and worn out. I'm not sure weather the transmission has ever actually overheated or the switch for the warning has suffered switch creep which seems to be a thing. Either way, precautions.. Fitted a new grille to replace the mullered old one. Then did something I had been tempted to do for a while, defender side and turn signals. I used a stop/tail for the indicator as it means I can easily keep my DRL's. Next on the hitlist is repair the sump, the thread is a little dicey on the plug and I fear it won't survive the next oil change..

Those lights smarten the front up a fair bit, looks really agricultural.

More stuff happening. Some boxes turned up. A headlight, to replace the one I broke doing some grade A moroning removing the oil cooler, put the ratchet handle through the side of it when the bolt let go. A sump to replace the current one with a stripped thread and a spark plug wedged in the 'ole. And a drivers side used MOD-spec Defender snorkel. Upon removing the old sump, I found very little sludge and a perfectly clean oil strainer which I thought was top notch for a 240000 mile motor. I did find these however. The lumps, not the socket set. None were metallic, and one bit that looks like a trolls toe nail was clearly a small plastic washer. Answers on a postcard 'cause I have no idea either. New sump got the dents bashed out, cleaned thoroughly with Gunk (still amazed at how well that works) and given a coat of anti-rust primer and then painted with the random red left over from the 'Rusty' stencil. Job jobbed. Then time to make the snorkel work. Much chopping about of the wing-inlet was required, cut it down from the usual big off-square defender thing, added a tube into the back and re angled the inlet as it won't clear the wing as stock. Curved the baseplate to match the wing profile, and recycled one of the fan mounts from my transmission cooler kit that I didn't use to fit it to the A pillar. Got it all painted up Fitted the new switches to the overhead panel, ditched the big control box as it took up precious cabin space now. Then it was time to find some mud. Went on a little local outing with a few mates. I have now also refitted the LED work lamps to the bumper. You can just see them through the gack. Stuck TD5 Broken stuck TD5 Ended up having to recover one of the trucks with a 360 tracked excavator, went in too hard and folded the steering drag link over the diff case. Well done. Up until this point i'd managed to not get stuck even after recovering 3 trucks, but ended up grounding out the rear diff and towbar on the final 'escape' backwards, so ended up also getting a drag from the excavator, albeit 100 yards to clear ground. Much fun was had. And I got home to find the headlamp I'd replaced has now got a big crack in it. Brilliant Til next time..

Hes gonna be upset when he sees the prices of td5 bumpers... Yea, I just had a look when you said. Ouch. Options of staying OE at about £250 used, or fitting a winch bumper.. I know which I'd be doing..

I know which I'd be doing.. I found out the hard way after buying a td5 with a broken bumper...i managed to buy a black texture bumper for bout £150. Was concerned about the legalities of a winch bumper on a newer motor. (Think i was wrong) if he does go for another stock bumper, trim the bottom few inches off before fitting it. I promptly smashed my new front, and my rear bumper off next outing..

Could always buy one with a good front end and rotten back and do what I did. Easy conversion, 1 VW T5 bulkhead, a sheet of 6x3 steel and some box section in various sizes is all you need. Cab back was tacked up in a day..
