To be fair it is sensible to do all the time, but it's habit I suppose. This is 4WD lesson 101. If the tyres hit a rut and slew sideways, it will spin the wheel very quickly/violently, breaking your thumbs. I refer you to my teaching granny to suck eggs comment as posted above if directed towards me, I've been driving offroad since I was 14~15, which was now over 10 years ago (jeez I'm getting on) I just forget- bad road habit. The discovery has PAS which is less likely to kick back the wheels from me (this is experience) but yes, still very much a silly thing to do regardless. Otherwise, as you are, not meant as a dig

We had a customer bring in a disco 1A the other day, roof rack, roof lamps, bullbar and massive spot lamps, bf Goodrich A/Ts, got chatting about landrovers, he eventually asked why mine is so tall. To which I replied that I drive it offroad. He looked puzzled. I realised that that point it was a sorry case of all the gear, no idea. Never used it a day of anger in his life.

Just do me a massive favour,next time you go off roading, take your thumbs out of the inside of the steering wheel! Quite. I would say teaching granny to suck eggs but I clearly have been doing it. Its complacency with where I'm driving, if its new I'm a lot more cautious. Thats all good then, it was the first thing i was told to do when i started 'froading 20 yrs ago ...... The second thing was to 'always send someone else to check the depth of the water ........'

Like the Disco! I have what lots of people tell me is a girls off road car, RR Evoque. So I did an off road day at Eastnor Castle in various Land Rovers. The Evoque was pretty damn good! RR Sport was my fave though!
Only done off roading 3 times, it's pretty good fun, wife won't let me take the Evoque off road!

The second thing was to 'always send someone else to check the depth of the water ........' Sage advice. What you really don't want to do is dive in enthusiastically in a 2.25 petrol 88" Series 2 and the floors start floating until enough comes in through the doors to equalise the pressure... ahem. Kept going mind! I really like the utilitarian but not ratty, capable but not overkill thing this has got going on. Something hardly anyone seems to manage to achieve with off roaders. Like the 200 series front end too

Haha! In a complete about-turn, I'm gonna be removing the front bumper today to swap with my brothers, as I could do with a more industrial front end, and the A bar has un-grown on me. If that is even a thing..

a few of an old disco 1 I had some years . Must admit don't see them many disco 1's still about that haven't rotted to death. Yours looks a tidy example. any plans for any suspension upgrades on and above whats already been done?

That's some bonkers angle you had on that! Mine was rotted to death, put a lot of new metal in and brothers 200 will need some before too long. Currently on H/D 1"~ springs with 2" Spring platforms, and 235 85 16 tyres so mine is pretty tall, brothers is on Unknown springs but probably the same as mine with Procomp shocks and stock size 205 16 tyres so isn't as tall. But his rides nicer, he still has ARBS

I think if I remember that had +2" procomp shocks with -2" tubular front shock mounts and rear shock -2" mounts. +2" springs. Front and rear relocation cones Sump n tank guard winch and tubular front bumper.longer braided hoses. Fitter the 2" wipers plastic arches the week before I sold it.
It needed welding not long after as failed its mot. Had a bobtail v8 rrc before this. Brought another 2000 series disco after this 300 series with a knackered cluth for peanuts with a host of goodies fitted and tons of welding and replacement panels. Fitted the clutch n sold it on. Helped to fund the offroad racer.

Slight update, mdh got these Francis M9 searchlights for me at a massive bargainous price, one with swivel and one 'spare' unit.. Needed to find a home for one. This is why I decided to ditch the front lamps.. SO I swapped the modified Defender winch bumper I was sporting with my brothers one-off winch bumper which seems to be made of RSJ which is more useful for me as I use my truck as a MV tug quite frequently. I made a pair of military landrover inspired wing-mounts for the lamp and a new CB aerial, as my last one was bumper mounted.. So I have one lamp on the bumper and one on the wing. The 'winch' lamp was a cheapy KC copy, so we had a play, painted the chrome body colour, and I plastic welded some bits of the daytime covers together to make a kinda convoy/BO lamp cover. Which I think looks pretty neat. More as it happens

So. This has been a while. Lets bring it up to speed. It has done a collect and tow of my tiny caravan we bought.. It did an 'escort vehicle' for a photoshoot with ThePollitt It did RRG when all else (The BMW) failed.. (thanks for the Photos mk14dr and niwid ) It did a 'family reuinion' with some of its previous torturers owners And many other things. But there comes a time when you have to step back and have a look and a think about things. The windscreen has now had a growing crack in it for a while and is now about a foot long. Whilst this was never an issue alone, I was loathe to have new glass fitted to it because I knew how badly jankey the body had got. Long story short, the body (not chassis) rear crossmember was collapsing into itself and was starting to get to the point of the rear of the bodywork sagging over the body mounts making it near impossible to open the tailgate. This was silly. To repair it would have been a lot of work. So. I decided to take the obvious plan of action. Poor thing. But wait. This isn't what it looks like. Is it? Maybe. Bin the really rusty bit. Keep the good end. Winner. I found a cheap VW T5 bulkhead on ebay locally, I wanted it for the window but I found the lower section fitted pretty well into the floor design of the Disco. Initial proportion check. That'll do. Turns out Hammerite 'red oxide' rust proof paint thins and sprays excellently. Trial fitted the 'rear doors'. Masked Threw some colour on to make it look niceish. Montana Slate Grey. Then it was time to take it home. So far I had been working on it at work in our valet bay out of hours. I made up some temporary spray deflectors from some dexion and a plastic drum and refitted my Vision Alert 60 for some additional lighting and drove it 'home' to the wife's grandmothers, she is very forgiving. Now. This is where I baffle a lot of expectations of the usual Landroverist. I'm not touching the chassis. For this to stay even remotely legal I can't modify it. Not that I would, chopped chassis Disco's are great for 'off-road use only', but they look odd and I want to use this as a truck. So. SO. No chopping. I built it this way so that even the original footprint of the bodies sill is still there. Today me and fatha Rich started building the back. Eye'd in place. Headboard is too tall. Whoops. Dodgy panorama. Got a few mounts left to build for it to be considered 'attached' but it's no longer resting on the blocks of wood. So progress is good. Anyway. Hope you've enjoyed basically what is me justifying repairing some rust in the most extravagant way.

Cool. Better than throwing it away like. What the plan for the bed? Stakesides? :-) Immediate plan for the bed is a true Oz style trayback UTE. Board it, get it back on the road. But you may have noticed the way I joined the rear rail to the sides, allows me to drop in an upright to take dropsides for the future. Currently it'll probably see most use as a flatbed but sides are on the cards, just not sure the timescale.

Samshing, often bobtail Discos look a little awkward but this looks spot on. The cab proportions look spot on. Love the little detail like the back doors to finish it off.
