Back in march 2013: Changed the original black GTI badge on the grill (171853601 041) Someone had changed a chromed item on it... New plastic covers for the front seat sides: New front licence plate holder came from Germany, original holder was long gone. Possibly it had been ripped of already when new, because it had the Kamei front spoiler with integrated holder (the old pics)

I wanted to keep GTI original on the inside and not change the seats. Still the driver´s seat bolster was slightly worn and had cigarette marks on it (Thats over 300000km and 14 owners.) Back then (2 years ago) the red/black fabric was not available. So I opened the Ebay once more. I found complete set of seats for 200 euros from Germany (again) The seats had been storaged for a while, here´s pictures from the original advert: I used the driver´s seat on mine (on the right side) and sold the rest to the nothern Finland to an Mk1 Diesel project. Driver´s seat just needed good was and it was then ready to be fitted into car. That rear seat was also sold, mine was better.....

Next I decided to disable the headlight washers. The hoses were leaking and I liked smoother bumper without the washers. I kept the original bumper and washers and also left the larger reservoir on its place, if I want to change it back. Must have been a standard option here in north. Klokkerholm repro front bumper, which included also new mounting set. Replacing the rusty bumper mounts... Also changed new indicator lenses, old vs new

I had the original seat belts also refurbished back then. I Found a old guy here in Helsinki running a company specialized on seat belts. He changed all the belts retaining the original latches and locks. Now seat belts work like new all though all the components visible are still original VW...

And changed the noisy heater motor. Original 1983 model AEG item was still there. It´s interesting to see, if the chinese repro one lasts over 30 years. Tight fit !

May 2013 Coilovers adjusted in (too) low position. Looked good- rubbish to drive. And those narrow Nangkangs did not help. Bought also original Golf GTI dealer showroom plates. (Mk6 GTI part number) And that was the first of the three GTI front spoilers on that summer...

June 2013 Drove the GTI on the ferry and drove to Bugrun held in Mantorp race track in Sweden. Biggest VW event in scandinavia, like Gatebil but with Vdubs. Met fellow Mk1 GTI owner there, other black one was also 1983 model if remember right:

Changed the flashy aftermarket radio to not-so-flashy Retro one: Also had Cobra remote control central locking / alarm / immobilizer fitted. Doors now open with keyfob and I can sleep well at night.... Also changed the ignition switch and had all the locks refurbished and bought 2 new VW- keys from VW Classic parts.. -> Back in 1 key system (well fuel filler has got its own key still) And also new cigarette ligher and dash cover replaced in the pic.

I also have a set of 13" GTI steelies with suitable Michelin tyres. Bought them because got them really cheap from a fellow GTI owner who was selling his mk1. I tried them on but decided to keep them storaged waiting for the right day.

Also ruined the oil pan and replaced it. (those 165 Nankangs and coilovers...) The oilpan was leaking already thanks to double-gasket-silicone-patent made by some previous owner Also changed the oil filter mount back then (someone else had broke that and oil was leaking.) GTI has got oil cooler and oil filter mount was expensive from VW (was still available) Luckily I spotted used one from Italy this time. (Ebay <3) Pics from the oil pan change:

And then...... Sold the GTI on february 2014 when we needed a second car at home. Bought a 2001 Audi A2 and sold the GTI to my mate. Again imported from Sweden to Finland. Just 1.4 55kw petrol but with Open Sky- roof (broke down, was repaired expensively by insurance company), leather interior etc. Changed S-Line steering wheel from a A4 8E Cabrio and bought A3 8L S-Line gear knob. Also had the bumpers painted, replaced the headlights, alternator etc. It had already TA- Technix coilovers and I just swapped ugly 16" summer wheels to those 17" VW Cross Polo ones. Loved the car, we drove 25000km with it in 11 months. Then I bought the Mini and it was time to sell the A2. (December 2014)

...I decided to ask, if my mate now needs a second car. And guess what- he did. So I swapped the A2 back to "my" GTI now just before christmas. It had been driven only 1000km after I sold her and got new battery, fan and indicator switch during the ~11 months when it wasn´t mine. But now it is. (I already adjusted the coilovers upwards a year ago and changed wider 185/45/15 tyres for the 7" rims, drives well now too.) Happy GTI owner again ! All the story until now has been from the near past next updates will be present then...

Slighty off topic, but retro oriented.... One of my mates did a find. He bought a 1987 M3 E30 on december from his friend this time. 100% original (If you do not count the Supersprint back box) It was imported 3 around years ago from Germany (when the E30 prices weren´t rocketing yet) Only 120000km, full leather, A/C, Siemens car phone, electric windows etc, BMW sound system. For some mysterious reason the previous owner newer registered/MOTd it into Finland it and it was forgotten for 3 years into public underground garage, where it received several dents from the fellow drivers parking on the side of it. My mate tried to buy it for a year and finally the owner said yes. The car did not start and the owner decided to sell it cheap thing it would have serious engine failure or something. So my mate got it for 18000 euros, which is quite reasonable looking the E30 adverts. And it was just 5km away. Few pics of the sorry (dusty)state of it before my mate bought it:

Next on the list with the GTI is to: - Replace the slightly boy racer spec Simons back box (which is welded into original central part) with a original spec exhaust. On the motorway the sound is also too loud now, sporty in town though. - Replace the worn/ broken door check rods from both front doors and replace door hinges (or pins) The door check rods seem to be out of stock from VWHeritage, does anyone now where to get ones at the moment: www.vwheritage.com/shop/171837251/door-check-rod-mk1-golf-mk1-golf-cabriolet/Should be in stock there in 5 weeks, so I´ll wait if they do not pop earlier elsewhere...

And the "new Retro" aka daily got new summer wheels. (16" Winter tyres on now....) I spotted a used set of OZ Superleggeras and I think they´ll suit well to the british racing green.... 7x17" ET 37 Tyres were worn Dunlops DOT 2002 and slightly too small, so they´ll have to go....

I took the GTI back on the road this week. I did take a closer look of the filler surprise on the right hand side C- pillar. Badly made repair, water had got between filler and metal and filler was partly off. I sanded those and did repair paint to those spots. Unfortunally, It came dark before I remembered to take picture of the finished result. Those shall do now before possible full respray and wider body repair...

Then I investigated what was wrong with the headlights, high beams were on all the time. My mate had changed the indicator stalk a year ago, just after I sold the GTI and reason was easy to find: Stalk was fitted wrong, high beam clip was not attached to the stalk and that´s why the high beams were on all the time. 10 minutes and lights were working like they should. And while I was there I took a picture of the speedometer: 320586 km, that´s 202931 miles. Golf rolled nearly 30 years through forests in swedish Lapland daily basis.

Did also small update. GTI had period KAMEI Golf ball gear knob fitted. While I get rid of the KAMEI front spoiler already 2 years ago I decided it was time to change new original Golf ball gear knob also. (Which my mate had ordered last summer from VW Classic parts and I got it with the GTI) Old KAMEI gear knob: (For sale) New GTI knob:
