Not sure if this is OT or not, but I was working on an old car about 10 mins ago when I noticed a neighbour a few doors up doing an oil change on his old pug. Hed driven it off his drive into the road, and was draining the oil out without a catch pan- I.e all over the road and allowing it to go down a drain. Cars have driven though it and people have walked in it so theres old engine oil EVERYWHERE.
I was a bit miffed but so being the big man I am I stormed right over... to my phone and rang the council who said they wernt bothered.
Should I ignore it? I was always told that if you allow oil to go down a drain the world would explode. Its not nice watching kids walk though sump oil.....

If youre feeling hard you could go over say "pack that in or I`ll open you up", or if you don't want to get in a tangle then just go over and say "wouldnt do that if I were you mate, you`ll get f*cked for it, mate of mine got an £800 fine for doing that" etc.

I only noticed what had happened as he took the car off the jack and saw the stream of oil running into the gutter, making its way towards all the lovely endanged sea birds, butterflies and flowers. Ill give the EA a try. It could be a minor issue or a big one. Either way its an eyesore and stinks!

Rang the EA, they say it depends on the quantity of oil dropped. I'm not really interested in getting the guy into trouble, I just want the mess dealt with! Theyve taken my details and the guys going to find out some info and ring me back with what action (if any) should be taken. Just had a thought though- what if they come round to my house and say "ello ello ello, whats all this car stuff round the back of your shed"? Also might look dodgy if a big orange van with "enviroment agenecy busy body nosy neighbour response team" turn up and are seen talking to me before knocking on said blokes front door. What if he comes round and duffs me up?

Yeah thats well out of order that is. Try to make sure the guy never find out it was you who dobbed him in though, he might give them a call about any current or future car related stuff you have going on that could be deemed as 'crimes against the environment' in tit-for-tat style retaliation.

Theyve rang me back. The EA don't seem too bothered, although draining oil into a gutter is pretty damn antisocial its not exactly the Exxon Valdez and its not a great enough quanity to warrant doing anything. Expect they are busy with people burning tyres and feeding asbestos to ducks to have time to deal with this. Would have thought thed put something downto soak it up. I offered to put sawdust down but they said theyd deal with it if neccesary.
I dunno, have a bonfire before 7Pm and the council kick your front door down, drain engine oil all over a public road on a bank holiday weekend and nobodys cares.

EA should ALWAYS deal with it, any polluting of waterways, or surface drains which usually end up feeding into a waterway sooner or later, needs to be tackled. Isn't used oil cancerous? Or is that an urban myth? Either way it kills all the little fluffy wildlife and the EA have teams of people specifically employed to sort it. There shouldn't be any trouble with you having cans of used oil stored, they wouldn't be impressed if it was open containers but if it's sealed and obviously not gallons and gallons like you're running a business they'll be fine, just explain you're waiting to take it to the local oil recycling bank. If you don't get any joy from the Environment Agency, PM me... I has contacts

Thats disgraceful. Plan B then- Get someone to film you trying to cross the road and slipping onto your ar$e, then ring 'claims direct' or some other such insurance claim vultures. Sue them off the face of the earth

Say back to the EA "I want that in writing because I'll be talking to my MP about it". It is absolutely 100% their responsibility, it's 100% illegal, my guess is you got hold of some t055er who couldn't be ar53d and hoped you'd go away.

Nah, ive told the EA, what more can I do? If they deem it a waste of their time then I'm not going to argue. I just hope the bloke who drained the oil's children get covered in the stuff then run all over his expensive white carpet and roll round on his brand new cream leather sofa. Him having kids and still leaving the oil on the road for his own children to walk though show how inconsiderate the bumwad really is.
I like the idea of slipping over and sueing his ass. Thatll teach him.
Nevermind, I guess its a bit of pub ammo for a rant later on.

As already said that is a total disgrace and bang out of order.
Just a thought if the EA deem it to be "not worth it due to the small amount" how many idiots doing this would it take for them to take action?
After all individualy each is only dumping a small amount, but all of them put together soon adds up?!

Excellent!
I've got loads of old oil around in cans...but now the EA have OK'd it I'm gonna pop round the corner (obviously I'm not doing outside my own house, that's stuff is nasty) and pour it down the drain.
Call them back and get a name of the person who decided not to act. Disgusting!

A nice idea would be to take your old oil round to the garden of the moron that dumped his oil in the street and pour it all over his garden A few folks here seem to be taking offense with the EA but forgetting that the source of this woe is the neighbour. The EA should send a letter to the neighbour advising that if he does not pay to have the oil spill cleaned up then they will do it and charge him for the pleasure... and that would not be cheap... Why should the public be subsidising his oil changes?

ring again like its you first time as an anonamous phoner, ask for name and position of the person you speak to, this will inply you are checking up on them and its standard procedure when a council rings EA, also the roads and drains are ownd by highways and byways. so give them a ring.
(personaly iff i saw him id be making him clear it up by force if necasary)

Heh, spilt about half a litre of oil on a road where the viva was when i was taking the engine out, and I got a right f***ing earful for it even though i sawdusted its ass of the face of the earth and cleaned it up. But if it's a whole sump-full i spose it's bad. It just seems so inconsequential in the greater scheme of things.
