I have just boughta 1985 Audi 100 and apart from a few niggles it's a great car. The main problem being the heater isn't working at all and I'm not a very hands on guy and my funds at the moment after buying the car won't allow me to get it fully reconditioned. So my question is what do you guys do with poor working heaters in this weather. I've been looking at the cigarette lighter heaters as a quick fix. Can anyone recommend anything?

As in not working you mean the blower doesn't function? or there is no heat at all ? If its the switch strip it out and look to see if its burnt out or just needs cleaning.

I drive a beetle with J tubes fitted meaning no heating at all... Wear a coat and hat and leave the window open a crack so the windows don't steam up lol.

If it blows but doesnt get hot (ooo errr) Try flushing the heater matrix with a hose pipe.

Its either the motor, the matrix, or the wiring. Give us some more info on the symptoms and we can take you through a solution.
As mentioned above, heater core flush if its blowing cold. If its the motor, you may be able to free it off or save it but your tech ability may scupper that if its well hidden. That said, most heater motor removals are long but basic in the parts needed to remove.
If its the wiring, ie, not blowing at all but mild warmth coming through whilst driving, you should obviously check the fuses, then consider a bypass to an on/off switch direct to the motor. Total mingebag solution as it will just blow full blast, but I'm missing a resistor pack in my Carlton and as a temporary solution it does clear my windscreen!

Nothing at all the blower doesn't blow and the motor doesn't turn. The guy I got it off had it in bits and says the motor is knackered, sometimes comes on when you hit a pot hole but I've now hit many and had nothing lol

Thats an electrical short, if the motor can spin over bumps you must have a short in your wiring somewhere...

My pick up does this occasionly, there's a dead spot where the brushes sit on the motor and i have to spin it manualy to get it started but it's like once in a year it happens, other than that i fix em in the summer before i need them mine so good i have to keep it on 3/4 or it boils me me the plug in heaters are next to useless IME, anything powerfull enough to work would blow a lighter socket fuse, the MIL had one in an old Lada she had and it was quite frankly curse word !

Hi, if the motor runs with a shock from a pothole, it could be the brushes worn and not making proper contact. Still sounds like a strip out though.

Also check the flap itself. Even with the blower off there should be a hint of warm air when driving. If not, probably the flap is damaged. It's made of sheet metal with some sort of foam pad glued onto. This foam dissolves over the years and the flap doesn't seal off properly, so cold air gets in even with the control at "hot".

Here's one I prepared earlier (like ... 24 hours earlier ) The old crumbled foam has been binned and replaced with modern blue stuff (which was a mousemat in it's previous life!) The cost? 40p in materials + 1/2 day stripping the dash to pull the heater out, and about 2 weeks worth of hi-caffine coffee! Was it worth it??? er No - it's still "just about warm"

Fan motor died on my E30 just after I bought it, annoying as I'm fussy checking all that stuff when I buy a car. Had a cracking offer from a certain Scottish BMW man on here for a reclaimed motor but as it mainly lives in its garage over winter it hasn't been enough of a pain in the ass to move itself up the to do list. When it is out in the cold it's coats on but that's all part of the charm, plus being a cab it's got a separate fan driven rear demist, although this is like trying to heat the cabin with a mouses' chuff! My tip, get yourself a good micro fibre cloth for cleaning steamed up windows, far better than those stupid spongey things, and on frosty mornings start your car 20 mins before you need to leave.

We just use a mains blow heater on a long lead, put it in the car in the evening and then turn it on 20 mins before you leave in the morning, not only is your car ice and snow free it nice an toasty as well, the wife loves it

..or moved into tech chat. slackerTHEpinstriper, I'm sure that there would be someone in Rotherham that could give you a hand to sort this!! Its a simple fix but just a bit of a lengthy process to get into the heater. We all have to start somewhere with car tinkering. Grab a haynes and have a go at it. If you get stuck, take pics and we will talk you through it...
