Covin, 911 Replica buildup, Winter update, or not?

I couldn’t agree more.

I’ve given up with fast cars. Since I’ve emigrated to the US I’ve owned some real crazy HP cars, including a Hennessy Viper Coupe. My uncle had an early MG midget at the same time and the midget was way more fun to drive.

For that very reason, I’ve just bought a cross flow Caterham to import into the US from the UK.

It’s all about the sensation rather then the actual speed!

Day started with a repair to the "solar Spa", high resistance on the low temp side sensor, so a quick fix there first...



Wife said how does it go from 90% finished to 30% in the same hour?


Lots of playing with the door latch to make it work, without binding when locked.
Ditched the bike cable from the door pull and went "NZ style" with some fencing wire.






Then started tackling the front drivers side lights, LED H4 bulbs, park and indicator all done now.



Flasher would not work....seemed after a cup of coffee, it all become instantly corrected?...and started working!
ACF'ed all the existing connections to reduce problems.

Worked on the dash board...small amount of smoke escaped, but not enough to stop it working. 
EMAS make 16mm buttons and LED lamps, so I installed them (note the Green one)






Then the other end...no brake light yet, but everything else works, but think that's because it does not have any master cylinder brake switch...yet.

So next jobs is to find a 50mm right angle pipe for the fuel filler, and new electronic ignition to make it start easier, then I can turn it around and work on the other side's electrics and door.





Maybe LED bulds are in order for some locations in the future...
So all up, glad with the progress.

This Corona break has been good to me, by my hands I built a conservatory, 2x composite decks, and got the 911 back on this road....the Covin was always next on the list to get some love. 
100% I'm now planning on getting it on the road, and then I will play with the cosmetics then....All in all, not in a rush.

Sold my Flux mig today, to get enough funds to get a cheap Tig and try to learn how to Tig, so I can make brackets and stuff for the Covin.

^ You can get dual stop/tail led bulbs, I got some for a big single cylinder road bike I had - vibration was killing normal bulbs so fast I bought a full box of 24 as spares!

Can't remember where I got mine (Aldi/Lidl ?) but eBay has some listed

Got the glass from the attic, and washed it down


Beat it into place, but the old window channel rubber fell apart in my hands, so have to find some of those

Offered up a Boxster door skin to the door....Hmm...almost fits?



Kids are at Grandparents tonight, so we are off for a cheap dinner soon, and maybe a Spa Later, if I can cool it down enough, set the Centeral heating pump to lowest setting, to stop it getting too hot today.
(Solar heated spa, so need to remove the cover on hot days!)

So today, I needed to turn the car around to work on the other door and side.
I don't know what part this is but, I think it goes here....?


So needed to install a mini tank, as using the 5ltr jerry can each time was not so safe. So got a mower tank, and filled it up...2ltrs approx
This way if it goes stale, I can get rid of it...will connect the main tank, but no need to yet.



So had to move her out, farting loads, has not run right for the last few starts, but got her out.





Turned her around,



So checked the float bowl, as it sounding like it was flooding?
Pulled the top off the carb was empty, into the Ultrasonic cleaner I won as a prize a few years ago.





Seems to work well...look at the buildup on the bottom.





Still not fixed, in fact, it used 2ltrs fuel in 8mins running...so not sure where its all going, more investigation needed. My thinking was, maybe the fuel pump has failed and the fuel has gone into the sump...so removed the fuel pump, pulled it down and into the Ultrasonic cleaner, 



and cleaned it up,




Really, I cant see the reason for the excessive fuel usage yet, fuel pump looked dirty, but OK and no problems I could see by eye....I have to dig deeper 

Thanks for your advice, will remove the pump push rod a replace pump with an electric one.

Some forward, some back...today is a "going backwards" day...

I got the electric fuel pump in, and it started and ran better, but not as it used to....so stumped there, tried to reset the Fuel idle jet, no difference, carb is icing too, but both sides of the heat risers are hot, so expect that is working?



Feeling lost, I moved onto the Passenger door, installed the new handle, like the other side, installation included cutting new holes in the door.



Trying to get some pics of Covin window frames, as I don't like the way it sits....but the Covin forum is now gone, and on facebook Covin people are very quite, or post nothing useful.

Now the frame is out, while trying to figure out how to make it fit better

So the last few days efforts, involved starting the car several times, to hope it had fixed it own idle problem...no such luck.
So today, I need to sort it, so planned to remove the inlet manifold and make sure the heat risers were clear,



Then it turned out it was a bigger process than removing the Alternator with fan, all the gubbins around it, and the inlet manifold....Turns out you need to remove the "doghouse" too....at least thats how I could saw it.

100% I had decided I would not go under the car today, so after some head scratching...I looked underneath and the answer was clear.
Remove the exhaust system, and I have the same access to the heat risers, and its only 6 bolts!



Last time I was down here in the exhaust, I had drilled some holes for the heat risers as it didn't have any.
Turns out I can get bike cable outer through the risers easy, without any black on it, so its clear and clean.

Doing some research, I see the newer Air cooled heat risers have a small pipe on one inside, turned into the exhaust flow, and the other side, away from the flow, to encourage the heat risers to work better.
So I clearanced the holes into the exhaust system to full size,



Then mounted a small triangle wedge over the hole, inside exhaust on the inside, to create a venturi effect on one side of the risers, stuck it there with pigeon poo welding.




Reinstalled everything and it worked correctly, idled perfect, risers got hot, no carb icing....left it running for 20mins.
Happy with my days work, I washed up and planned to go out for a cheap dinner...Ridzio Rico with my daughter
But needed one more test idle before I left....now it does not idle again...so the whole day seems to be wasted.

Ho hum.

These are the days that get me down...
So off for dinner with my daughter and the answer should come to me at 3am tomorrow morning....i'm sure?
