right bought a 1978 chrysler avenger this morning, from first glance it looks great, look abit closer and not so much, multiple shades of red, the odd repair and the original 1970's beige velour seats. so my plan is to turn it into a fast road car with the possibility of stage car. so first things first,i hit the internet, full superflex polybush set for it should tighten it up abit, and a safety devices 6point bolt in cage, it will stiffen the shell abit. while the interior is out to do the cage i will be stitch welding as much as i can then repainting as i go. future plans are gaz coilovers to help it handle, then for the power department a 2.0 duratec on bike carbs with some form of aftermarket ignition. should make for a rather lively little car, well thats what i hope

Where did you buy that from? Weirdly recognise the plate from a car a neighbour had in the very early 80's. They had a green one too.

Looks great, the late model Avengers don't get enough love tbh. And Serck plates too, keep those for retro feel! Plans sound good too. RWD fun Is there nothing that can be done tuning the original engine?

i bought it off a chap down near skegness who had it for about ten year from what i gathered, then person before him had it for 2 week and before that i think it was the origonal owner. i could go down the route of the original engine and tuning it but theres a limit, with it being a 1600ohv, you are fairly limited on getting power out, it is much cheaper to put a modern engine in thats better on fuel and faster and will give better cruising speed. will hopefully be starting work on it this coming friday, as i will hopefully have room to work on it, if i get my mg zr sorted. was also told when the previous owner got the car all the inner wings were blathered in grease, guess which bits are believably solid.

currently trying to decide which engine to use, duratec- light, more power as standard, bit more expensive, don't mate up to a type 9 box with out a bell housing zetec- cheap, bit heavier but still only 5kg more than a redtop, less power as standard both of these are readily available with a 2.0 zetec crate engine being £650 any other engines to consider?or any other points to be made?

physically wouldnt be room for a straight 6, and staying away from turbo's as its making a simple car into a complex car

Hmmmmmm, engine choices...!
I suppose anything will fit within reason, it just depends on how much you're willing to do to make it all fit in place...
How about a V-Tec Honda unit?! I'm not really that clued up on engines so I don't know what'd be best but I know that the Zetec is a very popular choice for a myriad of reasons...!
Failing that, you could always pop a Rover V8 unit in there I suppose...!!!!!!!
Anyhow, as I said, I don't know about engines and such-like so I will just wait to see how this project of your plays out... I can't wait!
Good luck with it all, I sense good stuff here...!

I'm wanting to stay away from variable valve stuff so thats v-tec out, i think a vy will be abit tight on space and i want the revvyness of a four pot.

Nothing complex about a CA18DET... its borderline agricultural! ...complete drop in engine, box, diff, prob... pretty cheap and readily available as people bin them for SR's. Easy to maintain (being such a simple engine), cheap to fix when it blows up, cheap to get all the powaaaaz from... also reliable (if maintained and not ragged) and fairly ok on the go-go juice.
But that's me, I'd do anything to stay away from a mangy ford engine and give my car aids.

I do like the Avenger shape, even without the L shape tail lights it's a great looking car. The last Chrysler one I remember seeing was the one my old chemistry teacher had back in the early 80s, blue with black vinyl roof - also on a T reg.
Keep the updates coming.

think I'm going to be using a zetec now just for ease of parts, brand new crate engine thats a 2.0 is only £650, will buy a second hand one while i get it in and up and running, just going N/A for the noise and its abit easier. that and the zetec bolts up against the type 9 gear box if it came from a pinto engined car.

still waiting on on the cage to come cant wait to get it chucked in, in other news the £351 worth of bushes came, so it looks like I'm going to be busy. while all the tie arms and control arms are off i will get them powder coated by a local lad that is very good quality. got a 2.0 zetec for free off a mate as the condition is unknown, could be goosed could be good, if its goosed i can use it to mock up the engine and mounts, then rebuild it into a high comp snorting monster but then put a used engine into it to get it on the road and running.

Tidy looking avenger that Drake. I had a Talbot Avenger for a while, but sold it as preferred my Hillman version. The Hillman/Chrysler/Tablot pushrod engines are capable of decent power. Mine's a 1600 Sunbeam Ti lump that's been lightened and balanced, road rally cam, ex-works big valve head and twin webers. It's good for 8000rpm and even with the standard 4 speed box, is capable of over 125mph, only on a track or private road, of course ;-) One of the weaknesses with the drivetrain, is the cross pin in the diff. I've snapped a few over the years in various Beams and Vengers. Looking forward to seeing what you do with this and how well it goes with a more modern lump in it.
