Thinking about various threads that have been posted recently, about Nova GTEs, 205 GTis Ect, I remember a comment in Street Machine (RIP) a few years ago about how the boy racers in their 1700 Burton crossflow powered MK2 Escorts were spoiling the chelsea cruise....
In ten years time will we think that Tupperware'd Saxos are cool..... ?

I sincerely hope not! I know what you mean though, and I have no doubt that until lately I've been a little hard on Novas, especially since the chavvy tipes are starting to move onto newer and sh*ttier cars, I mean a modified Nova can be a great little car, as long as it isn't wearing wheels too big for the arches, a silly bodykit that scrapes speedbumps, and more sh*t cheap "ICE" than you could possibly ever need, where a much smaller decent sound sound system would do a better job, but as I said it seems that 1.1 Saxos and the like are the new chavmobiles. But still, I can't see me ever admiring a poxy nedded up Corsa in 15 years at a classic show and wishing I used to have one of them instead of my Imps! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D I mean come on! ;D ;D ;D ;D

I think they will become classics. I mean, not so long ago stuff like a Mk3 Escort with body kit and louvred rear window was slated right left and centre but now people are doing cars up like that as classics or Retro-style cars. No matter how little we think of the nedmobiles now (and I include myself in this!), it's inevitable that they will be looked at with rose-tinted glasses! "Blue LED washer jets... ah, those were the days!"
Slightly off topic here but did you sort that fuel problem out on your Vaux Mattblack?

As the saxo's etc get a bit older, the local "neds" around here are indeed moving on. As their young little brains strain to work out what to buy in order to stand out, the thought occurs to them "the newer the better", and since they are all apprentice pipe fitters earning about 4.25 an hour the result is a horde of lurid purple, body kitted, slammed Kia's, Dawoo's and Hyundai's.
Aah the good old days of the Saxo. I miss them.

I think either mint original or tastefully modded hothatches will become classics, but anything with headlamp "eyebrows" should be in a crusher by 2015.

I don't reckon Saxo's and the like will ever really be Cla**ic or Retro, as they haven't revolutionised any thing or moved the game on in any benficial way.
The 205 GTi set new standards in Hot Hatches in the 80's, but 106's, saxo's etc. are not noticably better than this in any way, and Corsa's are undoubtedly worse...
Some of the V-tec Honda stuff might be revered in a few years because they do the business....

I can see what you mean, I mean the sixties racing or rally legends like Minis, Imps rear engined Fiat Abarths etc are renowned now far more than duller, less sporty, but no less worthy cars like Hillman Minxes or Morris 1800s, which are lovely, and no doubt classics, but don't have the same recognition or demand. The more special 80s cars like the Pug 205 GTi or Audi quattro are the same way, while there aren't many people who take Austin Montegos and Volvo 740s to shows. In a few years from now I think I might have some respect for some of the more interesting cars that are modern at the moment, like the current Skoda lineup, which I think are very nice cars considering that Skoda had to work with existing front wheel drive VW platforms that weren't built for that sort of car (eg the Octavia's got much the same running gear as a mk4 Golf, yet is probably a better car) and I have good memories of some of the mk3/4 Astras and Vauxhall Zafiras that members of my family have had and asked me to maintain etc, which are painfully dull and not particularly special, but are not bad cars, and I might stop to admire a tidy one at a show in a few years time if I see one, instead of getting snobby about it being a 90s car as people are doing to 80s cars at the moment at shows. But a Punto in a bodykit with 50 Cent screaming out of some huge speakers in the boot will never mean anything to me I have to say, neither will the current rubbish like new BMWs, which are fast no doubt but aren't all that special. I think Imprezas and Lancers have their futures assured too, since they're the sort of cars that people are growing up drooling over nowadays, whearas there are people on here that probably grew up drooling over forest arched Minis, Imps and Escorts, and children of the '80s like me (I have an unnatural like of Maestro vans and Scania 111s as a result! ;D ;D ;D) who remember quattros and mk 2 Golf GTis running around still fairly new.

Has anyone seen the new skoda octavia? Defo one of the dullest cars on the road. The old one was not very interesting but at least it was nicely proportioned and qiute recognisable, the new one is so obviously rehashed generic VW gloop i cant think of any reason to move my eyeballs when one comes past.

"Blue LED washer jets... ah, those were the days!" Slightly off topic here but did you sort that fuel problem out on your Vaux Mattblack? If by "sort it out" you mean "put it in the garage and forget about it", then yes....... ;D Hopefully I will be doing loads of work on the car over winter, including a good clean out of the fuel system. I seem to have stired up some debate with my comments, my original thought was the irony of what were once boy racer cars being seen as cool. I supose it's like the saying goes, "It's not what you do it to, it's what you do".... Personally, I'm more into the more "traditional" rod and custom styles, but scince I discovered this site my eyes have been opened to things like Euro look, which I didn't know existed. Grey primered Mk1 Golfs on whitewalls? Bring 'em on!!! If you read the "The UK's No1 hot rod magazine", its all about the RWD/FWD divide, but things aint that simple, IMHO.....
