Some great ideas guys.
Basically I think I want to have my holiday in the 1970s....
Butlins/Pontins sounds like a laugh but I don't think there are any of the old camps left like they were. Its all plastic water parks and kareoke competitions now. Most of the old camps are closed down and the ones that are left have had zillions spent on them. Still hear stories about cockroaches and the like though. And they ain't cheap.

just find a caravan site and find an owner of a caravan and rent it, or go camping, anywhere in scotland as wildcamping is legal up there, but not in england.
the mum went camping in the dales sumwer a few weeks ago and got woke up at 2 in the morni to the sound of seriously powerful rally cars practising on a night stage, they weer given free reign to go as fast and crazy as they liked apparently

Do not go to Butlins, whatever you do. Horrible place which some of my cousins have insisted on having their birthday parties in - brash, expensive and tacky.
However, what I would recommend is a static caravan somewhere like Ingoldmells (village to side of Skegness). We have one there and I absolutely love the experience, our caravan is an early 80s "Superstar" one in beige/brown. Some of the family want to trade it in for a new model and I'm fighting against it because it just holds so many great memories to me - the interior is full of fake brown wood and it all feels a bit flimsy. If they do eventually get rid of it, I'm going to see if I can buy it for myself and keep it in a big warehouse or something so I can put it somewhere when I can afford it.
It's just a brilliant thing because so little has ever changed in it, it still has an old 80s portable TV with an aerial that goes on the blink when it gets too stormy, ancient portable electric heaters with suspect wiring, flowery bed covers etc. Sat in there eating fish and chips while it chucks it down, hoping it'll ease off so you can pop down to the arcade and have a few goes on Lethal Enforcers. Retro holiday tastic!

has it been said just twice already? get that pimptastic 'avan, drop it on the back of a lean mean v8 machine, go to holyhead/fleetwood/stranraer, board ferry, take leisurely drive and stop around the south coast of ireland. guaranteed to be A) cheap B) friendly C) easy to find places to camp (sidenote: can give you details on place the exes family stays every year, not cheesy, a proper decent holiday camp type place thing :s) D) easy to get crispy E) wonderfully scenic F) suspension crippling DO EEEET!

How about the Olds and a huuuuge Airstream for a 50+ ft retro combo?
