They have updated all the systems so now they all update almost instantly I'd like to think that's the case but I'm not sure it is. On the insurance side of things, for instance, I'd suggest that all the DVLA site does is check the car's on the MID. If the owner still has insurance on the car - likely if it's taxed - I imagine that's why it's appearing on the MID as opposed to the new policy you've just created. But, hey, as long as it works we don't care! Would be interesting to know how someone who has bought a SORN'd, uninsured, car has fared when they've sorted their insurance online at the buyer's house and then immediately gone to tax it.

The whole things a con really with the DVLA making a months tax out of every sale. I've bought 2 vehicles in the last month and noticed when you tax them online using the new owner slip it asks for none of your details, just a ref number and the reg number meaning the new tax isn't attributed to you personally until the DVLA recieve and process the V5 which with the best will in the world would take 3 days, maybe 5-7. If you drive a newly purchased already taxed car home the ANPR has no way of knowing who the tax is attributed to, however if you taxed it over the phone or online on the day it may cancel out the previous owners tax, not that it would matter then. At the moment I'm happy to drive an already taxed new purchase home and sort it out when I arrive home. As a side note I rang the DVLA recently about the tax on a historic as whilst taxing online it took none of my details and was told the tax stays with the vehicle as it did previously and they just update the V5. Not sure if that's true but that's what she told me. Has anyone actually recieved their DVLA tax refund on a car sold yet? I have. Its a cheque in the post that takes 7-10 days to clear. I sold one and bought one in the same month. Going through hell on earth trying to get the new car taxed as for some reason neither the online service or the phone one will let me tax it. Useful. Anyone know why a modern car would not be taxable online or by phone??

I bought a car on Sunday that was motd but on sorn, I insured it before I left but when I got there it was in the middle of nowhere so no internet on phone, drove it the 70 odd miles home including a stop for breakfast With no problems. Maybe but all those cameras you passed will have logged the reg unless the whole trip honme was out in the sticks? In the real world the V5 takes days to get to DVLA and be updated so as far as anybody IE police, cameras ect know the car is still taxed when you drive it home so just do it the next day when home ( IF the vehical is taxed when you buy it that is OBV), the V5 doesn't have a time section so as far as DVLA know the owner drove it to you taxed then sold it and got a lift home

Forget taxing it online or by phone. All new keepers need to tax it in the post office. No explaination why despite repeated asking. "It just is".

I hate this new system, i see that it stops (or at least hinders) nasty little scotes buying a car with T&T and driving it around illegaly without a licence or insurance etc but for the few scrotes it's going to stop it's inconvenienced and cost the general law abiding motorist a whole lot, it's all rubbish anyway, surely the only fair way is to tax the driver not the vehicle, then it's down to the actual driver to pay for their own use of the road (how many cars can you actually drive at any one time???) But then that would negate the real function of the car tax system which is to be just another system to keep tabs on everyone and charge us for the privilege... Much as I hate to say it the only fair 'car taxation' is the tax on fuel, the more you use the roads the more you pay and you can choose to buy a more economical car if you so wish...

Also, the rest of the DVLA website / phone line is also helping to prove me right by not playing ball.

I can only speak from personal experience mate and my experience first hand is that, as new keeper, the vehicle was taxed online and continues to remain taxed.

I SORNed my MGF online with the DVLA at the end of september - got the tax rebate (2 months worth) cheque through the post 5 days later.
the same day i insured and then taxed my audi (which had been on a SORN) online within 5 minutes, and received email confirmation almost immediately on my phone.
basically it's been working fine for me, perhaps i've just been lucky for once as normally anything i try and do turns to sh*t or becomes a massive ballache

Anyone know why a modern car would not be taxable online or by phone?? I've had this problem with a car I bought last month and taxed yesterday, it couldn't be done online or by phone because the previous owner had it taxed as disabled. You have to provide proof at a post office to qualify for disabled or to change the taxation class so analogue in-person taxing is the only way.

Hi, with some of the uncertaincy over whether the buyer is OK to drive the new purchase home while the system updates itself, I wonder if the way we buy and sell cars will change. With say the seller taking the car to present to the buyer, which should be perfectly legal. Once the deal is done the seller can then sever ties to the car there and then or when he gets home. The buyer is then left to complete the formalities at his leisure. The seller either makes his own arrangements to get home or the buyer takes him back in his car, just needs to be agreed beforehand. This way the transaction is back to being a bit more civilised and more importantly legal.

If technically you buy the car at midnight on the last day of the month i would assume neither party has to pay for an extra months tax as one stops as the other starts..... but i have yet to test this theory.

What I and VIP said. Only taxing it at the post office or 'losing' the tax (bar shelling out for a dead month) is poppycock.

I didn't make this up. I was refused by both the website, phone line, and when asking them I was told the above. It must be poppycock indeed as 2 people on retrorides say so.
