I got a lucky with mine, totally encourages me to pursue my interests. Last December I was allowed to buy a GTR, Datsun 510 and a VW T2 in the space of a few weeks... mind you, I am the breadwinner and I'd of bought it all anyway regardless As andyborris said... past & present. Life is too short to have conflicted interests with a partner.

My wife doesn't drive, so she doesn't care too much about what we drive. She doesn't like the Porsche very much though - she thinks it's loud and smelly and not especially comfortable (and she worries that being lower than most moderns it's not safe). My 5yo daughter loves it though, and she comes to shows and the like with me.

Used to have a SWMBT (tolerated) but when I spent my 40th birthday cash on an old car she filed for divorce so now I do what I want.

I met my missus at a classic car meet, which she started and used to organised.
The last vehicle she brought and paid for herself was a 1955 Citroen H Van.
Think it's safe to say she has no problem with old cars.

The past two and current girlfriend all love the Dolly, as do most of their friends, with one exception, who just hated me in general tbf. The vibrations help.

my swmbo is cool with the old cars, only rule is it must remain roadworthy and moted as i had a mk3 astra cabby for years which spent most of the time off the road being modded. changed that for a mk1 mx5 which she loved but with having a 6 year old daughter and a 2 seater car it wasnt getting used so changed it this jan for a bmw e21 baur which she hasnt driven yet as its quite heavy and rattily so she doesnt fancy driving it yet but when its sorted out a bit I'm sure she will. she used to have a mk2 xr2 then a mk3 xr2i and would love a s1 escort rst but funds don't allow at the moment. on the whole she don't complain about my hobby as long as there is enough cash left to eat each month.

mostly my 4x4 s have been too high , sports coupes too low and the ten days of recent Reliant Robin ownership did not go down well but being on a lifetime journey of the highway i came with the hobby so tolerated and provided the vehicle is usable complaints are few. However life would be dull if we all watched football, went to the pub or played golf every week end. At least I'm around the house somewhere either workshop or laptop and i do my chores and my hobby is self sufficient not using family funds which goes down well.

Mixed reactions from various SWMBOs over the years : No interest as long as it goes. I got bonus points for anything that looked new/shiney/sporty to impress her mates "I thought you said it was a scruffy old Nissan - that's nice!" (seeing the Nissan 200SX for the first time) "No idea what it is but it's got pop-up headlights so it must be posh" (another Nissan 200SX) Happy to let me do my thing, as she was allowed to do her thing (she had an early Landrover when I met her - now running and Iveco camper so not all bad news) Liked anything with comfy seats that were easy to get into & out of, BMWs were always popular. "Old bangers aren't safe" ( but is/was happy to forget that and go for a drive) / "why don't you get rid and get a sensible modern"

Mine is developing an interest in motors now she's got a license and her own car. As with all Filipinas though, it must be new and bright and sparkly! Having said that, she'll happily jump into the RR for trips as I won't drive hers any distance, but she really doesn't "get" the interest mine generates wherever we go. "But its so old" is her normal response. Interestingly though, her family prefers mine to hers. People of exquisite taste no doubt and the girls don't care as long as they can fall asleep in the back 30 seconds after setting off to anywhere.
When I first got it with a knackered battery, it used to do all sorts of random things such as the wipers would sweep for no reason, doors would lock and the interior light suddenly come on, she was convinced it was the work of a ghost! Low voltage is not an understood concept when the alternative explanation fits so much easier.
She has no problem with me working on it either although she was heard muttering about the fact that my parts shelf has now become a parts cupboard!
So, new for her, old for me. Everyone happy.

I've had "the" car (Vitesse) longer than her (25 years vs 23). It has taken us camping in France many times including honeymoon and whole family to Switzerland in 2009 (kids now too big though), so it is literally part of the family. Other old cars are less well tolerated though as the newest member of the family fleet is 2001 the definition of old is usefully loose! My now departed 2.5PI was not liked as it ate my money and my time and made me very grumpy and hard to live with.

I'm lucky, swmbo prefers older cars as they have more character, the only time it's an issue is when she has trouble with harnesses and full cages. She has also been known to say newer cars make her feel sick and they don't smell to good. So when she's not calling me curse word, I'm onto a winner.....

We've generally had old cars, because we couldn't afford anything else but obviously old ones (for want of a better phrase) were generally not well liked because of the risk of breakdown, cost of parts and all sorts of other things. She loves the Granny though, it's amazing what electric windows, a sunroof, aircon and leather seats can do

If I'm honest I got lucky. Back in 2005 I was running around in a rather splendid little mid seventies Japanese future classic when my broad announced that she was carrying the next generation petrolhead inside her. She followed this announcement with, so you're going to need something more family friendly! I sais to her I'd need her to specify. So she said it needs to be as new as possible, cheap, seat four, and be from a mainstream manufacturer like a Ford or something. I went on a massive internet hunt with my new guidelines for a family car, and managed to bag myself a dealer demonstrator 2005 V6 mustang with just 117 miles on the clock. I kept it to myself until it arrived at the docks. I then took it home to my now heavily pregnant broad. When she saw it she said what the flux is that? To which I replied, New as possible, it's brand new, cheap, it was £8500 including shipping, taxes, etc. Seats four, and a mainstream manufacturer, a Ford... I followed that up by grinning at her like an idiot and saying I nailed it baby!! She just shook her head and laughed at me. I told her not to worry, we could get her a Volvo or something. I was then informed that if I was keeping the Mustang, there was no way on earth she was having a Volvo... we did eventually find her a car she liked, and we bought it, it was a 1993 Ford Thunderbird!! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones, who found the right girl... having said all that on the odd occasion one of the old cars breaks down, she has been known to have a bit of a moan... retrorides.proboards.com/thread/167739/sludge-tank#.VF69CWBFBcsBut I wouldn't swap her lol

She liked the Polo, but didn't like me spending time on it. She never drove it, or even went in it, though.
Then one day she was a passenger, she couldn't believe how quick it was, wasn't expecting it, or the noise. She wasn't quite as happy after that but more the point was she just wanted it working, instead of me playing with it. But it's my toy and hobby, it didn't get in the way of family life. She didn't want me working on any cars.
We're no longer together, but the car was not to blame.

My wife tolerates and to an extent encourages me, she'll come to an event and look round with me for half a day then sit in the car for the rest of the day. She's even suggested a holiday to France to go to Mulhouse, I couldn't quite swing it to include Nurburgring, Stuttgart etc as well but we will stop of at Rhiems to look at the old pit buildings.
But then she's got a horse and we've spent a shed load of money on equine related activity over the years.

The other half is completely besotted with her caged, stripped, compomotive wearing, satin painted MGB GT. Short and sweet. She quickly realised that although the corsa and the Ka she had before were a bit characterless against something so.. Shonky. But she loves it all the same. In fact, It makes ME look the old car 'hater', having a 2000 hyundai xg30..

bear in mind when i met her i was driving a senator on air and LPG, she knew what she was getting herself in for! especially as she googled it before i turned up at her parents in it, and the only pics that came back were of herses. plus i put it into the armco and a lorry on the way to our first date.... now, 7+ years later, she rocks this, tdi sport properly decked on coilovers with a 105hp/157ft/lbs remap- we discussed the possibility of her moving on to something else reacently, and she said it actually made here want to cry at the thought of selling it as she loves it so much. my work here is done....

I'm another lucky one. When I met Faye i was just putting my 1952 Land Rover on te road so she new what was coming. Luckily, she loves it - really enjoys spending time in it (unless it's the winter) and helps out when I give her things to do with it. Doesn't like the safety aspect of it though, demanded I fit seatbelts and is still badgering me to cage it... Luckily the Capri then arrived, so the Landy wasn't the only ay to do long trips any more. She's a big fan of that, the designers at Ford literally made the fishnet Recaros for a size 8 girl and with plenty of leg room she's more than happy in it. Very much not a fan of sliding it around though but I can forgive her for that, tend not to when she's in the car these days. She's cool. She lets me get on with it, wants to learn a bit herself, takes a passing interest and wants an E30 despite me having had no involvement with them
