OK, here's a thought. Why do you have to do something thats "different"? Yup this is also true... when you see Big Ron's Mk1 Golf pull off Euro Look to perfection. But everyone loves to see something interesting... and its nice to be the first to do somethin ...

knowing the yanks someone will have done a real salt lake racer on a Spit.
Aplying a style to a car that it doesn't natually go to can work really well if you have th right vision.
Some time ago Street Machine ran some "Motorvation" pics of a Mk1 Carp done as a Kustom / lead sled. You'd need some balls to do it but Steve Kirk's illustration of it looked awesome.
Likewise you could do it do a Calibra, maybe...

AK has made a good point actually. How much of a priority is being unique? I like my cars to appeal to more than one audience, which is always going to mean compromise, but at least it's not embarrassing. Lots of people think my car is just a nice old car, but others notice the ride height and wheels (when I had them!). When I'm driving it along I get thumbs up signs from grannies, hot rodders and people in vee-dubs. It's nice to have a car with a varied audience...I could make it more fashionable, but my Mum probably wouldn't like it anymore and I like the fact that she thinks it's nice. I was once talking to a friend of mine about dream cars and he said he'd like a red '57 Chevy, I was actually surprised at his choice and said 'in red? surely that's a bit common', his answer made me think, if his dream car was red, why would he choose another colour? The car would sit in his garage, outside his house or in the supermarket car park for nearly 300 days a year...it just isn't worth putting up with a colour you didn't like just in case there would be another red one at a show you attend once a year. When it comes down to it, your car should be whatever you want, it's no good being unique if you don't like it.

unique isnt important to me really, i tend to look at cars and try and get a feel for what they "need" doing to them, i knwo that sounds i bit arty farty but thats the way i go about it. there can be little clues found in any car which i think steer u to do certain mods.

people who try too hard annoy me, just do what you want to do, for yourself, not to impress people, get over yourself. as long as you like it it doesnt matter, for something unique at the moment can only really be done ad hoc, get the idea, do it, because you will forget about it. make sense?

actually, while on the subject of 'looking right', I'd like to ask slater...
what process did you go through in 'designing' your fiesta, mini and metro?
was it a case of 'listening' to what the car 'needed' or more "let's see if *this*works..."?

i agree with all of the above, check my ed38 build thread.... it is possible to do something totally different to everyone else. my cars got curse word loads of unique touches...... i think the downfall most people have is trying to search for a unique mod.... cause u end up looking at other peoples cars... so its not unique haha if u get me? if u think of something just do it ;D www.edition38.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=72671

i like the idea of using a well established style/scene and applying it to something new. like giving my classic 70s british sports car an early 50s rod style. not seen it on cars like mine and frankly, i love it! ;D (still needs glossblack flames over the front though) most importantly though, do what YOU want to your car, to make it how YOU want it to be particularly the little details not normally seen on a particular make/type of car can make it cool. I reckon we need to make the distinction between modding a car for aesthetics and modding a car to suit a particular purpose or to overcome something that is effecting the performance in whatever your ride is adapted for.

Interesting topic this Personally, I like to be different, but not necessarily unique. What's made me want to do my imp taking inspiration from this: and apply it to something like this: is more of a compromise more than anything. Kinda, making the most of what I've got. I would love a restocal style VW, but I can't afford one. I can however, afford an imp and I can afford to play around with a bit because if nothing else the imp scene is so much cheaper. I don't think I will do it 100% properly, because I can't afford new chrome everything, or to keep everything spotless. So maybe those who are very up on their "restocalness" won't approve, but as long as I like it, which I think I will, I'll be happy I guess! I haven't seen an imp taking this sort of inspiration before, however I'm sure it has been done at some point. If it hasn't, maybe thats because someone tried it and it didn't work- I'll find out if so! Personally thats what I'm quite into at the moment: Mixing different cars/scenes etc. This I think will produce some very cool, different maybe even unique modded cars! For whatever reason be it to be different, or like me, can't afford to have exactly what you want, so get as close as you can with what you've got!

What about mods you have to do but don't want to?
For example i'm gonna have to weld in the new rear arches an inch higher on my volvo as they hit the tyres cos its so low. Would look a bit better in the standard position, but the rest of the car looks better lower.

yes its narcissitic, but dash it,its mine I like it and it sticks out like a stripper in a convent. despised car, yup tasteless vinyl roof, yup pointless suspension, yup impractical wheels, yup learning to do it all myself made it all worth while. People can mock it for all they want, but I did it, and I like it. narcissism over Point being that you gotta do what you want to do, that is the uniqueness of it all. At the end of the day if you dig it, thats all that really matters.

Good on yer phatphord, not quite my taste in cars, but well done for having the balls to do it! Doing what you want to your car because you want too. Not to please the baying crowd. When I started playing with cars, we used what we had or could get hold of. YTS wage didnt go very far! Spent many hours in scrappies looking for bits that might fit or be adapted to fit. If you want to build an ' off the shelf ' custom, then do it, cos thats what you want. By the way there are some seriosly cool cars on here that I would happily have sold my granma for!! It wasnt what it looked like that mattered, it was how it went.

you'll not see another one of these to me its not about chucking cash at your car, easy to do to follow the 'formula' for your car. the necessity to do things on the cheap can lead to the most inventive of mods, very much in the same way as hot rodding roots. the best ones are always the little mods that make you stop and say 'oooh i didnt think of that' admittedly doesnt stay unique for long!

I'm trying to be *slightly* different by wanting Torq Thrust Type Ds rather than Type 2s for the Amazon.
I also think a hefty slam on Ford Magnum 500 rims would look the tits.
I haven't seen an Amazon with either to be honest, and since my mechanical abililty \ physical strength (ask ghettoeddie) is pretty limited I though I'd concentrate on wheel 'jewellery' for the moment while I improve to the stage of being able to drop either a B230FT in or some kind of V8. My friend Angus also informs me an mi 16 engine would fit.... wouldn't suit the car IMHO but would be interesting and dare I say it, 'unique'.
Presuming 5 x 114.3 to 5 x 130mm adaptors exist I also think an Amazon would look good on a set of Porsche Fuchs.
I also have a strange compulsion to fit my C4 with 16" gunmetal grey Watanabe F8s \ RSs, simply because its a modern shape and a classic wheel design... I reckon it'd work.

my mk1 escort was satin black with flames, not in any way unique, but parked in a row of pastel coloured ones at shows it stood out from miles away.

Volvo back as my main squeeze, more boost and some interior goodies on the way.
