Awesome project, will be watching with much interest What's it going to sound like starting/spooling up? I've been around Pratt & Witney PT6's in the past, they sound amazing when they hit the start button

IT'S ON! The handover is on Wednesday at 3.30ish in a murky, rainswept (I checked the forecast) car park where I shall be handing over a white envelope for what, disconcertingly, looks quite like an early Soviet bloc nuclear warhead in its travel cradle. I do hope the plods turn up to see what's going on. If so, you may see on the evening news that a couple of policemen are recovering from a 2 hour monologue on the vagaries of the Brayton Cycle This is so knicker-wettingly exciting that I just had to share. Photos later.

Got it home last night quite late. The transport cradle only just fitted inside SWMBO's Defender 90 with centimetres to spare. So awkward to get at that she elected not to help me get it off last night so all I have so far are the shots below. This morning I took it into work and got it palleted up and hidden away safely until the manual comes. Squeezy squeezy Starter motor, oil filter Over the top I iz now an authorised person First jobs. (1) Measure up to see if it will actually fit in a Spridget. It will but there's lots of drive, exhaust and inlet issues. (2) Make up kit to static run it. There's shedloads of funny connectors and threaded unions to sort. (3) Make up control panel for static running (anyone got a 60,000rpm revcounter lying around?) (4) Part disassemble to remove air starter (would make a huge centrifugal supercharger) and to see if the inlet casing can be rotated so it feeds from the top. (5) Buy loads of silica gel bags to keep the innards dry while standing. (6) Start looking for a Spridget. If I can get a pre-60 project it won't even need an MOT to get it on the road

We used to have Rover gas turbine units used for supplying the ships fire main during machinery outages in the RN, and they sounded great -if a bit of a curse word to start (hand cranked if I remember correctly), of course nothing like the ships main turbines (on a Type 21 they were the same basic engine as fitted to Concorde, and we had two!), the sound of them spooling up will never leave me), I raise my glass of vino to you sir, mad, crazy, whatever it makes most entertaining reading, and of course I look forward to seeing the MOT pass with the emissions.... It is for threads like this, that this site is fantastic

This weekend Matthew I shall be a turbine measurer. Sadly no log book in here The technical end. From top centre clockwise, oil filter, fuel pump, oil pump and starter motor. All gear driven from the starter motor when 'cranking' and then the compressor turbine after self sustain is reached. Not the foggiest what this does but when the manual appears all shall be revealed. Serial numbers Fire suppression 'horseshoe' around the main casing Need lots of this to avoid internal corrosion Engine mounts are going to be pretty easy to fabricate. Oil in and out. Oil not only used for lubrication but also to help cool the main bearings. Looking down the exhaust chamber. Multiple mercury tube sensors. The big vanes are static and you can just see the the power turbine behind them. From the top Inlet of the centrifugal air starter Fuel in and fuel return Starter motor. Will run the turbine up to around 15-16,000rpm unti it self-sustains Gubbins Everything is lockwired Air inlet. Needs to be rotated or remade so it's vertical. Needs to flow 2.1 lbs. of air a second at full chat. Burner nozzles. I think the igniter module should fit here Once the air starter is removed we will take power from here through a single stage helical gear reduction gear box. Another shot of the air intake. A mere 1869 hours on the clock in possibly 40-50 years The business bit.

Some of the photographs make this look really big, but even the pictures that make it look small make it look bigger than will fit in the front of the SpridJET. Are we therefore to assume it's going in the boot or something?

Are we therefore to assume it's going in the boot or something? It's 28.5 inches long and about 18 inches high and wide and on engine location you're wrong on both counts It's going to be like this but obviously in a Spridget Remember the hillclimbing I want to do? Truly mid-engined Does the Affably Amorous Artist fancy knocking me up a concept drawing/sketch???

The triple A could be persuaded to create such a sketch... That's going to be quite a passenger!

It is for threads like this, that this site is fantastic I was on Machine/Gunnery trials on Newcastle when Battleaxe or Broadsword went past, cracking piece of kit, Was also on Sheffield when they were running engine/propeller max speed and crash stop trials, that was an interesting day or two.. Ian, I used to know a couple of Engineers who used to work at the Lucas Hemel Plant, then I think they were at Leavesden building engines? Ill ask

Wow! What an utterly amazing piece of kit! I could look at something like this for hours and often do; whenever I’m at the Science Museum I always end up on the top floor in the aircraft bit studying the huge variety of engines they have there, the detailing on military / aviation stuff is just exquisite. Congratulations on the purchase and best of luck with your ambitious, barking and inspirational plan. Having followed the Goddess thread, I’ve no doubt you’ll see this through!
