Hi, This subject came up on another forum (different circumstances) and it is a minefield. Earlier this year I did a CPC module and the instructor said that they had a group of DVSA inspectors in doing theirs, he was surprised at how little they knew and at one point they were arguing amongst themselves!! and they are supposed to be the controlling authority!!

The reason why the towing rules have changed again is because of the almightly cock up that said you could only tow 750KG but you could increase that to 3500 combined weight (dependant on the car),it was so badly written and explained that even VOSA bods and the police didn't have a clue what was right and it led to a lot of people wrongly getting tickets and their cars impounded for 'driving other than in accordance with a licence' so VOSA have now rewritten it to make it clearer. They seem to have made another almighty cock up then, as it still doesn't make much sense! Typical really.......

we have questioned this and not got a sensible answer: "If your VIN plate doesn’t list a train weight, you should not use your vehicle for towing" obviously many classics don't have a train weight listed - so the governments advice is that we shouldn't tow?!?

I thought I had this pretty clear, but now I'm doubting it a bit. Here's where I got my info: www.gov.uk/towing-with-carLicences held from 1 January 1997 If you passed your driving test after 1 January 1997 and have an ordinary category B (car) licence, you can: drive a vehicle up to 3.5 tonnes or 3,500kg MAM towing a trailer of up to 750kg MAM tow a trailer over 750kg MAM as long as the combined weight of the trailer and towing vehicle is no more than 3,500kg For anything heavier you need to take a category B+E driving test.

"If your VIN plate doesn’t list a train weight, you should not use your vehicle for towing"
That's because they can't prove whether you are overweight or not!!

Colin And it predates construction and use regulations, so you could argue that point but even the handbook for a 1937 Austin 7 has towing weights listed and IF it were to go to court that is what the police could use against you although in reality that is very unlikely and there are no records in law of this happening.
