dodgerover I believe that's the system, yes, showed me a sample of the felt itself and it's much more substantial than the shed roof sort of stuff. Guarantee was for 15 years, so it should be good. Choice of roofing was with advice from the roofer too, we need the future proofing of being able to extend onto the new garage roof when we get to that point, or at least have the easy possibility of it, and the felt is apparently a very easy system to do that with. If it were summer time I reckon we'd have a go at DIY on this. As it is, we need it up fast and done well, so that means calling in professionals and paying more than DIY would cost and that's fine. This is not the sort of project either of us want to be cutting our teeth on and there's too much to learn to do it well in the timescale we have. That may be different when the garage extension is done, that one is still up in the air as to what route we take for construction so we may well end up DIYing that, maybe even out of reclaimed materials. Ideally, we want to find a neighbour pulling down a garage like ours so we can salvage the bricks, tiles, and door to match what we've got so when it's extended you can't tell so much that it was other than original, but we'll just have to see what happens.

No one likes an unexpected expense, least of all when it doesn't involve at least a bit of remedial spannering. Still - better to get it done to a standard you're happy with that constantly have that niggling doubt in your mind about if your own work was good enough!

That said it would cost about £600 in materials to do a single garage and take no more than an afternoon (once all the old stuff had been stripped off) probably a lot cheaper than paying someone to re-board then felt the roof. this is the sort of thing. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Insulated-ROOF-Panels-NEW-80mm-thick-6m-long-PIR-27-50-m-VAT/254583815564?hash=item3b4660bd8c:g:-BMAAOSwFpBeqqS-

I've used EPDM for green roofs, it's great stuff and as dodgerover says really easy to work with.

Compression rising with oil in bore denotes broken/worn compression rings. Bottom end (unless it was knocking) will be fine.
If you add oil and compression does not come up then it denotes valves instead of rings.
Cylinders 2/3/4 seem fine compression - no.1 definitely has an issue.
Wood/felt roof will be nice & warm in the winter - maybe a bit hot in summer though. Good choice.

Roof update. We got very lucky and the roofer could get out quickly and do the roof yesterday. This was ideal because it didn't rain all day and his small team had the old roof off, the repairs done to the structure, and the new roof on, in just four hours. There's no way we could have done it ourselves that quickly and that well in that timescale. The day after the roof was done it absolutely threw it down and was windy enough here to throw some wheely bins about so it would likely have destroyed the old roof if we'd left it any longer. Now, the Lanchester (and all the other stuff in the garage) are nice and safe again and it's one less thing to be worried about. Fifteen year guarantee on the new roof so we hopefully won't have to even think about it for a good long while. Really hope we don't have any serious storms now because we need the big fence to last just a few more months so we can save up to get that done. Spending on the cars, and everything else, will have to stop for a bit too while we get everything back in line again. Updates on progress here are likely to be few and far between for a while now.

Excellent result on the roof
One of our flat rooves has what looks like felt, you know it's black, bituminous (is shiny and sweaty where it's torn), little fleck stones on it, however up close you can see shiny strands of what looks like glass fibre. Very odd I didn't know reinforced felt was a thing, it seems such a logical thing to do (compared to your average shed felt)

Nice weather, schedules aligned, free time... Well, we better make use of that then hadn't we? Original fabric and bracketry, new tacks, new rivets, new padding, and a new backing board. Fiddly work, and time consuming, but so worth it for the end result. We'll be doing a proper update and a video on how these go back together properly when we've got all the others done, we just wanted to get one side done first so we knew what we were doing before committing it to camera. Felt really good to actually complete a job on the Lanchester. Got in touch with the wiring loom manufacturer and they've been experiencing serious delays because of the impact of Covid on their business, which is fair enough, we're not in a rush for that since we can't do anything about it until the weather improves anyway.

Great result on the roof. Nice to have the peace of mind over that I bet.

Absolutely, it's a weight off! Finished another door card on the Lanchester, this time the front one. This is the one that had the carpet section hand sewn back onto the rest of the door card. The map pocket has shrunk a lot and took some coaxing with the iron and a tea towel to get it back to something like the proper shape. Really happy with the end result all the same. The minor wrinkles you see should mostly settle out, the light is making them more prominent looking than they are. I have learned that tiny tacks and brittle old fabric are not the most fun things to work with, fortunately it's been a rewarding process more than a frustrating one and these have turned out much better than anticipated. There will be a full and proper update on the goings on with these, I just wanted to get a little progress update out there today. Now we know how these go together and what obstacles we might face, the other two should go together much easier and maybe even quicker. If anyone wants any finecut tacks we've got several boxes too many looking for a home, there's way more than we'll ever need.

They look great, they look like part of a well cared for 70 year old car exactly as they should.

You're going to force me to end up retrimming my door cards, now. Those look smart! I do need to review the door seals first though, that being the primary cause of the trouble in the first place...

Oops, new car! 180,000 mile 1.3 manual City X spec Maestro. I can't see me getting the Princess sorted until the weather improves and my schedule eases off and I needed something to tool around in. This popped up and the price was right so I grabbed it. It has some issues, like the fuel and temperature gauge not working, and rear arches with filler in the usual places, but nothing insurmountable. We'll see exactly how bad it is when it arrives. I bought it on the strength of the photos, the honesty and reputation of the seller, and my dalliance with Maestros in the past. What could possibly go wrong? It's got a full year's MoT on it and the MoT history is surprisingly clean. I'm getting it collected by someone else because the aforementioned schedule precludes me from going up to Buckingham to get it myself, unfortunately. Looking forward to it arriving, I do like Maestros for being A Car so hopefully this one will help me out for a few months.

Just sorting out the delivery side of things. Work precludes me from having the time to go and get it myself so I'm trusting strangers on forums again. I really am a lesson in how not to do things. Whenever you see me buying a car, don't do any of the things I do, it's a stupid way to buy cars.

If we all bought perfect cars there would be nothing to write about!
Bear in mind a running 1.3 A+ is worth £600 nowadays and how far wrong can you go!
Looking forward to more updates.

Well in that case I've already made money on this car, even including delivery.
