Quick question, it's taxed and insured but doesn't have an MOT (and would fail one at the moment) can I drive it to a place of repair (body-shop) who will also sort out an MOT when it's repaired? You can drive it on a direct route there for repair , as long as it’s pre booked with them & they have your registration number on their booking system . Hopefully you’ll get it back on the road soon . Great thanks, that's what I thought but always nice to get confirmation.

Due to lack of motivation and time, pressure from current workload, and pressure from SWMBO, the MX5 has gone...
... but only to the bodyshop/garage! The instructions are make it structurally sound (sills), sort out the handbrake and get it MOT'ed. Should have it back in a couple of weeks, it'll still look rubbish but will be a sound base to work on. Then I'll be able to use it through the summer before deciding what to do next. Just driving it for 5 mins this morning reminded me of why I want it back on the road.
The pressure from SWMBO was get it fixed or get rid, but also she wants to drive to work in it!

Was thinking the other day that you’ve been very quiet, so this sounds like a good result! Looking forward to more updates (on the MX5, there are other forums for updates on your wife And my wife doesn’t let me on those forums! )

I'm looking forward to getting it back, not in time for the weekender unfortunately. Had a quote for a respray as well, that's reasonable, so that might get done in the winter, need to find the brightest red I can (Ford Racing red looks good).
I'm, not allowed on Mum's net either...

Progress report, visited the body-shop this morning. Initially greeted with you might not like what you're going to see! Actually the rust was about as bad as I expected and not as bad as some I've seen on here. So far they've pretty much finished the passenger side, putting in the sill and closing panels I supplied. On the drivers side they've cut a lot out and will need to put in the rear section of sill., Then put on some lower wings, the arches themselves are all good. Anyway some pictures... my_mx5_125 by Mark Palmer, on Flickr my_mx5_126 by Mark Palmer, on Flickr my_mx5_127 by Mark Palmer, on Flickr my_mx5_128 by Mark Palmer, on Flickr my_mx5_129 by Mark Palmer, on Flickr my_mx5_130 by Mark Palmer, on Flickr The standard of work looks really good, they normally work on Range Rovers, Jaguars etc, but normally have a 'classic' in the shop as well.

That's not too bad for an early MX-5, to be fair. Also, it appears Klokkerholm panels for MX-5s fit a damn sight better than the ones I had for my T25* so it's nice to know they're not all total fox-picture * re-reading that I realise that might sound a bit ambiguous; no, I wasn't trying to get MX-5 panels glued onto a VW van I was trying to get T25 panels from the same manufacturer stuck to a VW van

Went and had another progress visit this morning, I had to buy tyres for the Disco from the same estate, it's nearly finished body wise. Both sides now fully welded up, they've used the whole sill panels, lower wing replaced, a splash of red spray paint. Wings will be primed (2 pack) and the sills fully waxoiled. Then it's off to have the handbrake sorted and I should get it back on June 1st (expect it to start raining from next weekend)! The slightly less pleasant part was getting the bill, this is after spending £400 on 4 tyres for the Disco, mumble, mumble, cough, £2,200 and that doesn't include the handbrake fix and I supplied most of the panels (good job SWMBO has just got a new horse that I paid for). I would thoroughly recommend Autocolour in Royal Wootton Bassett for any repairs modern or retro, may not be the cheapest but the quality and service is brilliant. Tell them I sent you, I might get a discount of the re-spray then.

That does look like quality work and its good that they let you look at it in progress .You can see its as good underneath where it counts as on top . At least you know its been done absolutely right and gives you piece of mind and something to show anyone if you sell it .

The paint finish at the moment is just temporary, when finances have recovered I'll get them to paint it properly.

Ouch, that’s some money!! Proper passion money, many would have looked for a different car.
Many years ago I used to get tyres from the same place I suspect.

Well I was hoping to get it back today but there are delays getting the handbrake sorted (no issues, yet, just the garage is busy). Shame as I'm off on holiday next Friday so that'll be half of June wasted Many years ago I used to get tyres from the same place I suspect. ABC Tyres (now Wiltshire Tyres)? good prices and service been using them for about 25 years.

More delays.
Been on holiday this week on my return I visited the garage who had sorted out the handbrake but not done the MOT as they didn't know I wanted it done (despite that being my initial query). The bodywork is all done bar the waxoil and the wings are only in primer (waterproof).
So having sorted that out and found the missing front numberplate, determined that it will pass with no rear bumper I left them to it and it failed! Some minor issues, sidelights, wiper blade, wrong colour indicator where I'd changed a sidelight unit. Also unbalanced front brakes and inconsistent idle, emissions were OK. Nothing that a good Italian tune-up wouldn't cure as it's been stood for about a year. Except I can't do that as it's not MOT'ed or taxed, catch-22.
So I'll be collecting it (after it's had the waxoil treatment) sorting out the minor issues, fitting the bigger 1.8 brakes I've got (after I've built up the calipers and ordered discs/pads), clean out the idle valve and ragged it back to them. Just seen that I can get a 15% discount from EBC through the MX5 Owners Club, so it'll be their grooved discs and green stuff pads.
At this rate it wopn't be worth taxing for June (except I forgot to put it on SORN when the last tax ran out), there's a track day at Thruxton on July 5th that I'd really like to do.
Frustrated...

Did a bit a preparation today for sorting out the above issues. When you're going to rebuild calipers there's nothing like a clean organised workplace... this is nothing like a clean and organised workplace So after a bit of sorting out (ignore the mess near the camera it's the bench that's important) Then a delve around the parts I've got and this is what I've got to work with; - 1.8 front carriers and calipers cleaned and painted
- Bigg Red seal kit and new nipples
- Existing pistons as they're not marked
- New caliper slider pins
- New pad retaining clips/springs (although I think these may be wrong)
I've also got a 2 sets of used discs and 1 set of used pads, but I think I'll buy new discs/pads. Oh and a full set of Goodridge braided (but black) flexible lines, Goodridge stickers and some brake fluid. The flexible lines came with new banjo bolts. Rather annoyingly I also found 2 handbrake inner adjusters that the garage had to buy at ~£10/each! Hopefully I get this sorted out and fitted in an evening. Mark

It's back (sans MOT of course); looking even more of a Shed than before but it's all solid now! The paint that's been put on the sills and wings is temporary and the wings are ion 2-pack, waterproof, primer. Now just the MOT to sort out, visit to Halford's this afternoon for some bulbs/wipers and tomorrow brakes. This is the list of shame; Oh and this just happened yesterday with my Alfa (who said they were unreliable, well mine has had top end rebuild and replacement gearbox but apart from that).

Following on from luckyseven have a musical interlude, Yes Phil Collins very much of his time, although I was in a student house where you could hear 4 people playing Face Value at the same time. I do know it's a cover originally by the The Mindbenders, al;so covered by Petula Clark, in a medieval style. Any way that's not what I love, this is... actually its the dimples that do it for me... EBC turbo groove discs with green-stuff pads. This is what they're replacing; comparison of disc size, they are bigger (1.6 to 1.8 discs) and fitted, looks good and should perform well, the black is an anti-corrosion coating that will wear off. and hidden behind the wheel Was it straight forward, of course it wasn't. I had to put the calipers back together and for the life of me I couldn't get the dust seal on, ruined one of the new seals so went inside for lunch and a look on YouTube. After watching a video fitted it in 5 mins! but now I was a dust seal short, spent ages trying to get the dusts seal from the caliper I'd taken off but couldn't, took other caliper off but pushed the cylinder out before I disconnected the hydraulic line. So one caliper fitted with a seal that has got a hole in it and one with an old seal. After that it was all fairly easy. Got SWMBO to do some brake pedal pushing and bled them (needs doing again). Clearing up guess what I found, 2 old but serviceable dust seals, grrrrr I'd sorted out all the missing, wrong colour lights and it seems to be idling OK now but by this time it was too late to take it for a re-test,. So need to re-bleed the brakes, fit rear bumper and take it for a re-test on Tuesday (I'm away on Monday). Might get it all back together for a track day on July 5th.

MOT passed!
and it's perfect convertible weather (not).
It's a funny thing mental health, it's only a car but I feel as if a weight has been lifted and now I can just enjoy it (OK there are a few jobs to do both necessary and unnecessary but there's no pressure).
and now Taxed (despite not putting it on SORN when the tax ran out in March it renewed from June 1).
