I watched the excellent Bob Hoskins movie "The Long Good Friday" the other night and as there were some fine retro cars in it, many new at the time, I noted down the number plates in the hope of finding if any survived. The results are interesting. None are currently taxed, the dates they are liable are shown after the details...
EOY102T - Ford Cortina. 1/8/93 YPD596T - Jag XJ6. 19/84 NLC999P - Mk1 Granada. 1/2/94 HS10 - Rolls Royce - not found on database (was blown up in the film) POU206M - Renault 5. 1/1/85 NCD815M - Yankee Ford Fairlane. 1/4/2000 RPK530R - Volvo Estate. 19/2/93 RAP911M - BMW 2500. 1/12/85 THX260M - Mercedes 220D Hearse. 1/9/2001 TUV598S - Citroen CX. 1/11/88
I thought the yank Ford would be well dead as it was being used as the "lap of honour" car at a banger track... that it lasted to 2000 is a wonder. I presume it made a less auspicious lap or two. Or maybe its somewhere awaiting restoration or something...
The Volvo estate has a date of liability half way through the month, so I asume it was written off and the tax cancelled. If you cash it back normally its gone back to the start of that month IIRC.
I assumed the Merc hearse would last a while as professional vehicles like that tend to have long lives and low miles. Interestingly the DVLA say it was white.
The Mk1 Granada did well to get to the 90s, although it was also a professional car being used by the same funeral director as the Merc hearse.
Even the Renner 5 lasted longer than the Jag XJ6 did!
Am I just a sad case but I'd love one day to find a car in a cool old movie or TV show thats still on the road. (Heartbeat DOES NOT count!)
Anyone ever have any success?

This is from the Sweeney: Taxed up to August 2007! Also from the sweeney, made it to 1995: Just 8 years for this 7 series: Interestingly all the Fords I checked made it into double figures, none of the brand new BMWs did. The old Fairlane is a massive surprise, it could indeed still be sat about somewhere.

I'm not surprised the Roller's plates aren't on the database Alistair, HS (Harrold Shand) 10 - could well have been made up! I'm surprised they didn't put false plates on all of them. I'm sure I read about that Torino ages ago. I thimk it was a b@stardised Batmobile replica and it's in a museum somewhere. All time top film by the way. Some of the Minder and Professionals Capris survive - well documented I know.

I remember doing something similar for the cars in a few Fawlty Towers episodes. The Maxi that the coppers had in that episode with the con man lasted about 5 years I think from the date of liability.
Does anyone know where the 1100 that John Cleese thrashed is? That must have survived - does that museum in Keswick have it?

No idea if the HS 10 plate was genuine or not. Thought it might be as I'd have gone with HS 1 if I was making one up. However, the car meets a firey end anyway.

Do you think they blew a real shadow up in that? Been worth a bit then, surely?

This MK1 Escort from The Sweeney, liable from 1985, untaxed! Got the guts thrashed out of it, 1.1L! Better luck with exotics? This example from The Professionals liable from 1991! Still untaxed though. Another Professionals, liable from 1984, no luck again. Mainly here for autoshiters to remember "THAT" brochure. The current leader of the pack is this fine example of J-tin, a Hiace from Keeping Up Appearances! All the way to 1992, probably now sat on Onslow's driveway. With a dog in it. One of the biggest problems is the more featured cars (tried Richard's Rover 216 but sadly failed) tend to get fake plates, so background vehicles are your best bet.

Update for picture alone, Rab C Nesbitt! All the way to 1997! Check out the beacon!! I'm inclined to think it was a normal Cavalier made up to look like a police car, real police cars don't appear on the DVLA find do they?

I'm inclined to think it was a normal Cavalier made up to look like a police car, real police cars don't appear on the DVLA find do they? Yup! I once sat bored watching "Real Cops Are Dead Cool vol 48" or somesuch real life police show. And I was tapping in all the police cars, or the cars they'd pulled over. All the police ones were in there, ranging from panda cars to motorway T5Rs. I think it'd cause no end of grief if they were DVLA-exempt once they were finished with by the force and sold on the the public.
