I wonder where the heck that scrapyard is that they film Scrapyard challenge in? I know its a fix and they "seed" it with the stuff the teams need for their projects but I was watching it a few days back and the yard they were in was pretty retrotastic...
PB Cresta FB Victor 2x Morris Minor RS Turbo series 2 Renner 21 "Quatro" 2CV VW Beetle 105E Austin Mini Some sort of mashed Farina Allegro
etc
(those are just the ones I recognised/could ID/can remember)
So is this a real scrappy - I thnk not really. In which case did they just round up a bunch of cars, heap em up and that to "dress it up". some of the cars are stacked like 5 high - probably as a "wall" to protect against spies or prying eyes during filming.
More cars wasted for telly or what?

I saw that the other day as well Alistair.......and I was wondering along the same lines as yourself. It looks like a different place to the older series, or maybe just redone somehow? I spotted the Minors, Beetle etc, and I think a Skoda Estelle as well?
I agree that it doesn't look like a real scrappy, more along the lines of a set really as you say. I reckon they've wasted a fair few motors on that show over the years. I particularly felt sorry for a poor little DAF that got butchered on one show.

Its a scrappy near Reading (The later series were anyway). Ive been there REAL mix of stuff there. All sorts from RX7s to moldy Firebirds. They don't let you anywhere near the set however. But the 'real' section of it is full of random stuff. At least was last time I went which was about 2 years ago

Looks to be a stone's throw from me on the Army base in Bramley, Hampshire according to en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scrapheap_Challenge (see 'Locations'). EDIT: As above, used to be filmed at Wokingham Car Spares near Reading.

When it was filmed at Wokingham Car Spares you'd always see dead bangers there with 627 on, the number of Terry Coke who always had their name painted on his cars (he may even have run the place?). I see they actually work in buildings at the new place.

It is seeded, but really the stuff there lasts for an entire series or more and they just plonk something like a 'handy' DAF tractor unit, running and drivable complete with fuel in the tank or whatever it is they need to complete the challenge, on top.
There was a VW Beetle that popped up in pretty much every episode in the early days. I guess if they're already in the scrapper there's no harm done, the stuff they don't touch doesn't get mangled so if it's a real scrapyard they should still be there in the same condition.
Incidentally, the environment agency would have a field day with the number of supposed scrap vehicles (the seeds) that aren't depolluted. They all seem to have batteries and fuel/oil in them!

A few years ago I was involved in one of the teams that produced a Robot Wars robot for several seasons. There was quite a strong crossover between the RW teams and the SC teams. Anyway, both shows are/were a total fix. The teams that make the best telly go through, their robots don't get pushed in the pit by the house robots on RW or they just happen to "find" the good bits in the SC scrappy. Moral: never trust ANYTHING you see on the box.
You're right though, good stuff in that yard.

Bang on. He's pretty sound and always has interesting stuff. Most of which I've posted up on here over the years.

On this sunday's scrapheap challenge on channel 4, I spotted a VW beetle gearbox in the foreground of one of the shots. Sad how I recognised it

Do I understand correctly that an MZ was used on there recently?

Interesting - I actually went on the Scrapheap site to find out where the scrapyard that they used was and was told that it each time it was put together just for the programme.
I guess that it wouldn't be much good for TV if they had a challenge and then one team just went and got a non-runner started and then won!

I like scrapheap challenge, but usually only the ones involving a car or van. Anyway, I was going to say on the last series there was a black TR7 outside one of the garages, didnt look too rusty either!

That would explain the metro and the 800, maybe the american scrap in the yard was filmed to give them impression of a stateside yard.
