mass produced every mans car, standard styling, parts bin wheel upgrade, parts bin bigger brakes, stripped interior, tack oreintated suspension, roll cage, bucket seat, 2 litre twin cam on individual throttle bodies @220bhp. to me that ticks all the boxes of "cafe racer" however, if you parked it next to healey sprite on minilites with a stripe down the middle, then did a straw poll on which was a "cafe racer" (in the context of this discussion) everyone would point to the sprite....

I don't want to rain on your parade - cos there is a massive helping of ooooooffff in that Healey. But it is a very early 100 model and came from the factory like that, no bumpers, door handles, glove box, roof and possibly no heater either! Simplicity by design!

I kinda like the XK8, it has potential I've always felt it would be a very smart investment. Prices are chugging upwards now but ten to fifteen years ago these things were being tossed around for just a couple of grand. I wanted to grab one at the time, feeling certain the prices would rise sharply once they were through the uncanny valley. I never did though because I have a mortal fear of Jaguars in terms of the maintenance/repair/parts costs and at the time I was losing money in large quantities to a passing Alfa Romeo addiction. They look damn good. Almost e-type good in my opinion.

however, if you parked it next to healey sprite The Healey Sprite would be the obvious no brainer to aim a pointy finger towards, but I think the Mk1 and Mk2 Astra (by which I mean the square ones and the more rounded ones that followed) have something very nice about them. I think the Mk2 (ie the rounder one) could have a lot of its detailing stuff removed/replaced, and with the right stance and wheels and some tinkering... definitely a contender for a Brit retro cafe racer. (not sure whether I'm right in assuming 'mk1' and 'mk2' equate to 'the more square one' and 'the more round one') This is pretty nice... It's like a stubby SD1 = )

I'd like to add this, wheel choice could be a little opinion inducing, but I like it... They're the wheels I dreamed of having on my Dolly originally when I had my japanese power plant daydreams. Works so well on that, I love it.

Some research about them threw these out...

Loving the thread! Although certainly not "British" this is the first car that comes to mind when I think of a cafe racer [/URL]

This thread has got me into soooo much trouble. I've been looking for a nice 924 for about a year and then stumbled across this thread. The XK8 above really floated my boat... Fast forward two or three months and I went to see an early orange 924 (part ex trade in being sold 'out of the back of a dealer) and saw a nice XK in the main garage shop. Long story short, I'm going to be the owner of this... Sorry it's a bit modern(!). Any ideas how this could become a Cafe Racer?

Any ideas how this could become a Cafe Racer? Wait twenty years, rip out all the interior, fit a manual 'box, drive it flat out everywhere. *n

Top grammar tips! Bought = purchased. Brought = relocated Lose = misplace/opposite of win. Loose = your mum

Well, this what Jaguar did to it: or more extreme But the recipe is simple (but some what expensive): - Motorsport Alloys (wider and lower offsets) - Proper lows (coil-overs) - Aero (splitter, skirts and big wing) - Brakes (multi pot calipers, big discs)

If I were any good at Photoshop I'd have a go.

Change the rims to some black steels. If I were any good at Photoshop I'd have a go. Easy to do too as the Jag has the same PCD as Chevys and it should be easy to get 17-inch or 18-inch steels to fit - then just adapt some 60s Jag hubcaps and there you go!

That is lovely. I'll try and get round to starting my companion thread to this one with the details from Le Mans later in the week.
