OK, shamless one here, I have a bloomin great Oldsmobile with a trashed autobox. Getting said big heavy box out of said big heavy car is going to involve some moderate arze. Pillock & I had a little looksie at it last night and although the Olsmobile forum says the engine really should come out the top with the engine/trans attached we reckon theres space to get to the bellhousing bolts OK from top/bottom with the engine in place and drop the box from underneath. (to quote Pillock - "nothing that a well trained baby couldn;t get to anyway") I have not set a date to do this yet, having wee small child at the mo doesn't help but damn this has to be done. ideally next few weeks, one weekend. I reckon 3 or 4 of us (for the weight, the "here hold this that end" and the crack factor) would breeze the job no problem. If anyone fancies coming on down and lending a hand there will be tea & biscuits and swearing. Anyone with previous experiance of getting a TH400 out of a mid 60s Olds particularly welcome. LMK and I'll let you know when its going to be so you can roll out your excuses then

I'd be up for that AK. I'm in Notts so it won't be too far to travel. Not a clue about Yank stuff, but can lend my general spannering / chin stroking / tea brewing abilities. Most weekends I'm free, but best put in a disclaimer incase I'm elsewhere when you decide to do it!

just a little note, the input shaft on a th400 is about 4-5" long, so youll need to be able to slide the gearbox back a LONG way for it to clear the torque converter. don't know if that will be a problem or not on your car- you may have to undo the motor mounts and stuff so you can tilt the tail end down sufficently?

If it's a weekend when I'm free, I'd be more than happy to lend a hand. I'm only in Ilkeston, so just down the road really...
Cheers, Martin

I'm just outside Ashby, weekends are tight in May but evenings would be fine - I haven't worked on a yank tank since my Dad's Mustang.
PS was that you in Practical Classics this month?

LMK and I'll let you know when its going to be so you can roll out your excuses then If I was closer I'd do it, as I have plenty of previous yank experience including dropping the tranny out of one of my dodge pickups to swap in a new torque convertor, with the help of only one other, and then only for the first half of the operation (we got it apart, put the new torque convertor in, and then realized that the flexplate bolt pattern was completely different that I would have to go back to the breakers to get the flexplate as well. You should be able to do lift it with a floorjack and one person to steady it. This all reminds me of a funny storry I once heard. A guy is changing the gearbox on his Dodge Coronet. It's a manual A-833 which has a cast iron case and probably weighs as much as your typical autobox. Anyways he's got it all unbolted and is holding it up underneath the car while lying underneath. While he's benchpressing abotu 90 lbs of mopar gearbox, his cat spies a comfy place to rests, and proceeds to lie down on his chest, leaving him stuck, underneath the dodge, holding the transmission while trying to persuade the cat to leave. Moral of the story. no kitty doors on your garage.
