I've recently discovered there are a couple of 50cc endurance scooter races in Australia, and they look like an absolute hoot! They vary between 3 hours and 24 hours depending on the race and are aimed at 50cc production scooters.
Being a big fan of retro vehicles and silly endeavours I would love to enter either a propper retro stepthrough scooter or at least a retro looking scooter. Are there any 50cc stepthroughs from the 1970's/80's capable of 80ish km/h with a little tweaking? are any of the more modern retro-style scooters capable of such feats?
I know it is a long shot but I love the idea of getting out there on a proper vintage or vintage style scooter and competing amongst all the modern looking things.

I can't help you with information, but where are these races? I'm assuming they're all in the Eastern states? Do you need racing leathers? If you can do it in textile gear and jeans, then I'd be keen to have a go. I'm not buying leathers for it though.

would a Honda C50 be fast enough? they look like the C90/C70 and can be tweeked using pit bike parts. An Aprillia rs 50 is a bit sportier than you want but they easily reach 80+km/h with de restriction. I guess you could remove the fairings and streetfighter it.

I'd rather loose by a mile cause I built my own car than win by an inch because someone else built it for me. Your car is your story, so don't let anyone else write the book.

You need to have a very very careful read of the rules as to what is and what isn't enterable, for example RM and CR50 engines are usually not allowed in the 2T classes and there was also a 50cc 4T that you couldn't use so everybody builds to suit the rules, the best thing to do is go to a meeting and have a look - if its like the UK ones its usually a right good laugh, can remember if leathers were required or not though. There is a hell of a lot of engineering goes into making those bikes not only go well but also last the distance......The speed difference is quite impressive, When I saw it i'm pretty sure it was on an oval track.

Thanks guys.
Waveman - 24 hour is QLD, 6 hour is South Australia (Mt Gambier) Still working out what the requirements are for each.
Skraps, I'd wondered about the Honda - easy access to tyres etc, stepthrough frame so should count, haven't found much about their speed/potential though
Dodgerover - I'm still looking into regs, from what I've seen so far it is basically stock 50cc scooters with restrictors/exhaust/carby/tyre work, nothing more allowed. Haven't seen any separation between 2T and 4T in the Australian one I have been looking at, nor any rules on scooter age.

I went to the one at Lakeside (Qld) last year. Some fella had a decent off and needed the ambulance called.
I've got various Japanese scooter mags. If you need hotting up bits for them (fiercer CVT clutches, bigger fans etc) I can give you sites or brands to look for.

What was the Lakeside one like to watch Sciclone? that is a 24 hour right? Hopefully the injury wasn't too bad.

They used the short motard/training course, rather than the proper track. I don't know if it was 24hr or not, but this is the layout they used. www.smallwheelsunday.com/ (scroll down to the Google Maps with outline. It's the red one). Some of the really low and wide scooters were bottoming out on the concrete at the hairpin, but the guys doing that (including the one that crashed) were also on the heavy side.

Great idea. I'd think you want a four stroke engine. May not be as fast but will require less fueling stops and is far more tuneable if allowed.
We did a 5hr with a honda express. the engine was fubar but it ran. We got pulled when it began to smoke.... the complaint was that the marshalls couldn't see the course!!!!

Jonw I'm trying to get a list of what has run previously to get a feel for speed expectations, but from the hints I am seeing I think 2T will be a requirement in order to keep up.

I'm one of the first "Sixteeners" - those that were restricted to mopeds when 16 rather than the 250cc motorbikes mates who were a few months older (in same school year!) could ride. These mopeds were unrestricted and would fit your requirement albeit quite expensive over here now. Some mates, despite being allowed to ride 250cc motorbikes, had 50cc motorbikes and again quite nippy. They have all but been forgotten but other than Honda were two strokes. What about a Vespa 50 ? Basically a small frame Vespa so excellent spares availability.

If look at a more modern Chinese retro style scooter, if you find a two stroke it'll have a minarelli based engine that is really tunable.
A Yamaha aerox would be my choice, i had one at 16 and it'd do 0-60 in under 9 seconds, I had it dyno'd at 18hp but it wasn't strictly a 50cc. You can however buy mid-race 50cc kits, with pretty wild porting and a single-ring piston. One of those alongside a 19mm carb, high revving pipe like a Yasuni c16 or Stage6 r1200 would easily see 65mph+, provided you had it set up right (it'll be very revvy so light rollers are a must, probably around 4.0-4.5g). An aftermarket variator like a TopRacing or Malossi kit it essential on Minarellis too.
You could also go for something geared like an old-shape (pre 2006) RS50, or anything that uses a minarelli am6 motor, they're pretty high output in terms of hp/cc.
