OK, so I am still driving a borrowed car, still using the bus, still waiting on my "daily" coming home and thinking that if the Mazda has to come off the road at all Em won't drive any of my yanks so I should maybe follow the advice everyone is giving me and get something "sensible" as a daily... So I happen to see this Mk2 Scirocco for sale. Looks kinda tidy. IIRC they are pretty cheap for a 80s hatch/coupe thing, Random thought for the morning is that I should maybe torcj the Chrysler for ithe insurance money and get the VW. Who knows what about them? What's a man need to know? Here's some random pics off the web www.northwestvwclub.org/events/bugin/Bug%20In%202002/23-charcoalgrey-scirocco.jpgI quiote like this white one...

they are great cars and really cheap.... this one belongs to a good friend, he is storing the car at my workshop, so i can use it if i want : and after one day hard work : and the car is still original; factory stereo etc... the only down side is, that the headroom is to small for me, especially as the rocco has a sunroof.... so i'll buy one and fit the 1,8l injected engine, gearbox and power steering in my Mk.I Jetta....

A friend of our’s might be selling his dad’s maroon Scala soon, owned it a long time and it looks really tidy. He reckoned they’d only get a few hundred for it, which surprised me – 8v injected lump, nice interior, seemed a good car to me.
Are values for MkII’s really that low? I suppose they fall between Golfs and Corrados.
They’re taking it up to Stamford Hall this weekend, might try and sell it there.
I’ll post a pic tonight, plus maybe scan a few other oddities I found recently when sorting VW stuff to put on eBay.

mine had a year's ticket, couple of months tax, Weber, 1.8 replacement engine, electric windows and full factory leather interior, VAG alloys, no rot.
£90 off ebay, was gonna be £100 but speedo didn't work, cable wasn't connected.
couldn't fault it TBH, went like stink, easy 120+. stripped it for parts when the MOT ran out and made several times my money back.
went back to running mk2 polos cos the missus was happier driving them and there's more in scrappies.
filmiget (sp ?) is local to us and knows all there is to know about these, maybe worth a trip over ?
i think i've still got a few bits lying about.

When did you own that one Jack? I regularly used to see it on Ipswich Road, then it popped up once or twice in the ECA auctions. After giving it a look over I remember thinking it didn’t look as smart as it initially appeared.

After giving it a look over I remember thinking it didn’t look as smart as it initially appeared. I owned it for a little while in 2004, bought it in June and sold it in October. My brother used it to commute to Diss from Norwich for a bit. Sold on Ebay it to a guy in Newmarket. At speed with my brother at the helm. (anti stance?)

They are really, REALLY good cars. Mk1 Golf handling for Mk3 Fiesta prices. Spares are readily available, because they're a b'stard VW lovechild you can find most stuff on the shelf at GSF or Euro or, better still, the VAG breakers in Basford I bought my storm for £475 (but they're the probably one expensive model), spent £6 on spares in the year I had it, and sold it for £450. Other people on here I know have bought a runner for double-digit prices and had no hassle with them at all. Likely problems - the fuel filler rusts and contaminates the tank (worst case is a recon filler pipe, a tank flush and a new lift pump if it's screwed that), the clutch cable pulls through the bulkhead (repair patch available, most cars already have it on) and they rust around the windscreen in which case haggle hard, or bodge it up depending on how long you want to run it. If the windscreen has rotted well then you may well have a fusebox or carpet (or both) full of water. Mine used to fill the under-dash tray with rainwater and throw it into my shoe the first time I accelerated hard. 4x100 wheels-a-plenty, consumables are off the shelf, nothing expensive in a service really. The bodywork isn't bad for a Karmann-built car at all, no real rust issues but bodykitted ones will naturally be slightly worse than the earlier non-kitted ones.

I had no problems at all getting a classic policy for a Scirocco, £250 for a year including breakdown cover and I live in a fairly high risk area. You've normally gotta be 21+ though.

I had an 83 1.8 Auto, was a decent enough car although the 3 speed gearbox was so sluggish. They have a nice driving position, curse word dash and buckets of 80's charm. Sold it after a month or so, it had served its purpose and done a couple of long journeys around xmas.

So if you built up 2 years on your mum's policy as a named driver, only Direct Line will accept the 2 years NCB, any other insurer will treat it as zero once you start your own policy.

yeah i know about that, but a no claims with direct line is better than none atall, and direct line give me cheapest quotes out of tonnes of insurance companies so ill stick with em, they seem to know what they are doing and iv heard no wrong doingd from them
