my 'new' daily: too many doors to GTi it engine rattles like a rattley thing, but it was 150 and has 8 months MOT It says on the V5 that it's a 1.1 but for some reason it only has four gears and from what i've managed to glean off the internet only the 998cc has a four speed box ... it has at least motivated me to get my bus back on the road cheers, Phil.

Personally I like 'em. It's sometimes nice to have a cheap car to bomb around in whilst doing up your "real" car - I did the same when I was doing the Benz. I had a Mk 2 Golf which I bought for a couple of hundred and criss-crossed the country in it! Great little car! ;D

1.1 four speeder sounds right: I had a J-plate Trio S a few years back and that was a four-speeder! There's alot of misinformation about these pugs it seems: My bruv's got a '91 five-door 1400, and according to the "official" source there ain't no such animal for that year! Looks a bit "sheddy" to be really retro, but maybe if you drop it a bit and put on some nice wide black steels, it'l look good. (I'll try and find some pics of my old one named Piglet!) Still a good choice of biffabout though - OK so the trim falls to bits, but at least they don't rust too bad, they handle OK and for some reason the exhausts always make them sound like they've got a much bigger engine....

My brother-in-law had MK2 Golf Formel E a few years back, with the '3+E' box.... he had a second hand standard 4-speed box fitted.... don't think he even noticed On the subject of beaters, I bought a 1985 Cavalier hatch for £100 while I did my Carlton Pick Up. It was great throwing all kind of curse word (bit of Carlton, mostly... ) in the back and not worrying. Welded up the rear spring mounts for the MOT and sold it to a mate's neighbour for £150....

... the only injury I sustained was a bumped head when I let the seatbelt of without realizing the car was upside down and that's not really the car's fault.

Someone has swapped the engine!
The 1124 engines were 5 speed in the 205 but older engines from the 104/Samba etc are 4 speed. Which is odd as theyt wouyld need to swap the subframe as well unless its a bit of a bodge so the engine could be a bit loose.
The rattling is the transfer gears, they all do it. It shouldn't mean anything...right up until the time the engine goes!!! (joke)
Note: Use ONLY genuine Peugeot oil filter as it has a non return valve to prevent oil starvation on start up. If the car has a halfords etc one on CHANGE IT! or you will be in for a new engine in jig time!!

Are you absolutely sure about that? I had a '91 Trio S with a four speed and 1124cc. My then-housemate had a '91 Zest with 1124cc and a five speed box. Both engines were exactly the same.....

The engines are identical. The gearboxes are v similar also, they fit under the engine. The 5 speed has a lump on the casing to house the 5th gear and an additional engine mounting point. You can fit a 4 speed into a five speed subframe but not the other way around

So how did I finish up with a four-speed one? I had a full history with mine with the original bill of sale that quoted it was supplied as a 4 spd from new. I'm really confused now.

No...your car was fine.
Some 1124 cars had 4 speed boxes some had fives. All I'm saying is that at some point the engine in spiny's car WAS a five speed and someone could only fine a 4 speed engine when the old one went pop. These engines generally get sold by scrappies etc with the gearbox attached as it's a faff to get it off, and to 98% of peole they 4 and 5's look the same! The 1360 5 speed engine on my Samba Rallye went boom and I bought another from a French "specialist"sight unseen (doh). What arrrived was actually a 1124 engine but with a 4 speed box They all look the same.
Later 205's had engines with the same cc but theyt were completely different designs and all 5 speed. They are not interchangable

OK, since you're the resident expert - what's the deal with my brother's one then. It's a 1991 J reg 1400cc five door GL with the re-styled lamp clusters etc. Except that in all the books of parts that my dad has in his shop (you know, those big bibles where they work out what filters / plugs / brake pads etc you need) there is no corresponding model. Wierd.

J reg 1360 5 speed sounds right. Would have the newer TU engine. Older ones were XS or XY engines.
Not surprised the big books miss it out as Peugeot reshuffled the range specs every 15 minutes!! Particularly towards the end.
The real givaway on spiny's car is the 5 speed gear lever!

I see. We get the same sort of grief with our Astra. It's a 1998 car, but a mk3 shape. A 1.6 LSi with fogs/alloys/pas/abs/posh interior (basically CDX spec). Again according to the books, there's no such animal!

the engine swap would make sense - the engine bay is spotless but has signs of tampering, eg a lot of the nuts are 'what you have in your toolbox' style affairs. i'm not that bothered, it gets me to work and is good on petrol. it just not any quicker than my van

two last points
1) Check the oil filter -really
2) If (when) the heaad gasket goes. Pop into Renault and order up a set of pistons and liners for a Renault 14 (same engine). Swap them over and bingo 1558cc. All these motors are essentially the same with the cc being acheived by swapping piston liners around!! That should surprise a few hot hatches!

When the head gasket went on mine I called it a day and sold the car - I needed a bigger one anyway. I wonder if the unsuspecting foo's I flogged it to (for the same money I'd paid for it) ever made it home......70 miles in a car with a knackered head gasket and no temperature gauge! Hahahahaha. Buyer beware, and all that stuff...all they had to do was check the oil and they'd have realised I was doin' them up the kipper!
