An uncle, who died the other year, spend all his working life at Longbridge. He told me with a continuous production line you couldn't stop just because you had run out of a particular part so it wasn't unknown for vehicles to need quite a bit of remedial work at the final stage. For example he told me about the Mini production line where Coopers could be fitted with drum brakes on one side and disc on the other just so the car would still roll. I've read about this elsewhere with dealers finding Marina's with mixture of drum and disc on front axle when doing PDI !

How often do you think BMC cars ended up with parts meant for another model? I see A60s, A40s, ADO16, Minis...

You've probably already seen it, but here's a video of the Trabant production line.

AFAIK Volvo still use that type of box - at least they were a few years ago. Great thread by the way.

I am working in Saarlouis at the Ford assembly plant for Focus, this is a picture from 73 of the engine decking line you can see a Capri in the foreground and Escorts in the background, it was built in 1968 producing panels for Renault then it went to Ford ownership, Ford was then concerned that the UK wouldn't join the EU so started escort production there because of import tariffs into the EU. They now build all Ford focus models for Europe here and soon C Max which is moving from Valencia. i went down the line today and found the point where this photo was taken becuase the floor track is still used!!

This one is rather sad, after over 90 years of stamping production in Dagenham was the very last panel stamped before the plant closed on 26th july 2013

RS200 were built by Reliant for Ford ! It amazes me that such exotica like Miura, Montreal, Daytona, Dino, Stratos and A110 were built on a production line. I suppose I expected them to be individually built.
