We're soon to be moving into our first home, but it doesn't have a garage!! I'm used to having free use of my parents, but that won't really be practical anymore because of the distance.
I did consider just getting a shed to keep everything in, but it would be nice to have a garage so that I've got a bit more space and I can keep out of the elements.
Just down the road are some council garages which seem quite good and well secured. I've also read that council garages are pretty cheap.
However, they don't have any services; which actually renders them pretty useless for anything other than storage.
I was wondering if anyone has any solutions to it? I know I'd have to be careful about making any changes to the fabric of the building, but I have seen fairly simple 240v systems made using automotive batteries, cheap solar panels and some sort of transformer?
Also, it would be useful, but not essential, to have running water. Ideas?

Check conditions of tenancy. I rent a council lock-up and it strictly prohibits anything other than parking / storage. No working on cars etc "what so ever". In fact a couple of years ago we all got a letter reminding us that if caught working in them then tenancy would be cancelled immediately.

That may be the end of that then...cheaper to buy a shed!

I used to rent 5 at one time, but then the council/housing association started clamping down on storage of non roadworthy vehicles/working on them/people using them for storage other than roadworthy cars/people using them to store business stuff etc. The rent wasn't that cheap either by the time I gave them up £30 per month 10 years ago. But they were only around the corner. Basically beware of the busybodies, as they're the ones who usually dob you in for not playing by the rules.

Trouble is, you cant swing a cat in the average council lock up. Some are bigger than others and it depends on the car you have/amount of tat you accumulate but they are often, as mentioned, tight not to mention damp and rodent infested!
I have two on 9 quid a week and despite the leakiness and infiltration of rats and mice get on well with them. This is largely down to the garages being within sight of our flat and knowing all the neighbors. I work out side of the garage mostly with an extension lead dangled from our top floor des res and keep all in eye/earshot sweet by being considerate with the racket and preforming the odd oil change/service or whatever gratis.
The council have no beef unless someones on there case in my experience.
You can get a generator, it would need to be a quite one though!

Mines the same, only storage of roadworthy vehicles. I had to give the registration for mine and notify them if I change vehicles. That and it took nearly three years on the waiting list to get one. In fact I'm not sure why I bother with it.

many years ago I got evicted from a council lock up for using it to work on a car after A local council bod drove past and saw me, I couldn't deny it as we were lifting the engine out as he stopped to take photos, I had previously received a letter reminding me that it was for the use of storing a roadworthy car.

Look for a unit. I rent a lockup in an industrial area, it is the middle of three with curse word access so no good for a business so we rent it contract free for cash. Costs £160 a month and can make as much racket as I like at all hours.

I rent a garage, Expensive for what it is, And my next house must have a garage so i no longer have to pay the extortionate rates for a council garage with a leaky roof. All the other tennants (bar 1) use theirs for storage of stuff rather than cars. Our tenancy agreements are actually quite simple. "they are designed for storage of a motorvehicle. the council cannot accept liabilty for anything stored in the garage, be it a vehicle or otherwise, they are used at your own risk" (or words to that effect) BUT, ive just broken a car in mine, Use it to store all sorts of stuff, And havnt otherwise ever put a car in it!, I changed clutch outside it before, Do all my servicing there (as our rented house has a drive but the tennancy agreement says no vehicle maintanance ) I wouldnt reccomend it unless you have a very lax council... And the garages are well lit and secure.. as people try their luck. I live in a villiage and the door has been kicked on all the garages more than a few times!

Just rent a garage with electrics and water on site. Check Gumtree and the local press until you find one. Council garages are difficult to come by anyway in my experience.
I rent garages for a living and see loads of creative uses of them - cannabis plantation, car breaking, motorbike repair centre, minicab repair, food distribution centre, etc etc.

Spot on point made above, it's all down to your neighbours and how "interested" they are in what your doing. It's usually an old boy with nothing better to do but it's certainly true that the vehicle must have t&t on it to get one in the first place. Obviously after that it's your call. We're about £40 PCM in Aberdeen.

I've got one my MX-5 lives in. I've been out there working on it a fair bit without issue, I must check the tenancy to see where I stand officially, but we've lived here over a decade and I've regularly seen people working on cars/motorbikes/parade floats etc. There weren't any questions about my car when we rented it, but then there's also always one or two empty garages in this set, so I guess they're not really in a position to be kicking people out on technicalities if they're not filling them all to start with.
Mine's also bone dry, with a streetlight directly outside it. It seems like it'll come down to your local council really, as it sounds like some are more accommodating than others.
As for power and water, I've resigned my self to a cordless drill and a bucket. Power would be a huge bonus, but I think using power tools much would more than likely attract the wrong attention pretty quickly.

Private lock-up's often don't have the same restrictions as council items. I used to rent two (in Leek and belonging to Premier Garage - VW agent). It was a case of "anything goes". I scrapped a Volvo 1800S in mine using a Stihl saw to cut it into small chunks. Owner's agent came around to collect rent from other tenants (I paid mine direct) and wasn't the slightest bit bothered about what I was doing.
