we wont get started on the royale wax as its been discussed many times, but yeh, £7000 for that pot, gimme colorwax or turtlewax anyday. What?!!! Are we saying that this: ...is £7000?! Am I getting that wrong? Surely that'd make it cheaper to have a high-end repaint than to wash it?

....the life-long refill pretty much proving that the gunk in the tub is probably worth £10 and you're paying £6990 for the name and bragging rights. I mean, even if the stuff was worth £3500 and they're making 100% profit which is pretty common in retail, by the second time you asked them for a refill they'd be crying. I really do admire what the guy did to his astra, BUT it's a pretty stock standard car. How much cleaning etc did it take? Wouldn't it be lots more impressive to take a 1984 Ford Escort and make it that shiny? The p'sstake however is quite simply the funniest thing I've read on the interlyweb for yonks. I'm going back for another read right now

That Royale stuff is just a business thing, you're paying £7000 for the "license" to use it as much as you like (hence free refills). Detailers can then say to customers that they can use this type of expensive wax very few others can, which impresses people with huge reserves of cash, who then get them round to clean up their motors on a regular "contract", so they get their money back. Otherwise they wouldn't do it.
I think that's where some confusion and pee-taking has come in, I doubt very much the Astra owner has paid £7000 for a wash and wax. I would reckon he paid probably £500 for the detailing job and if you're going to spend that much on a new car, I reckon it's a worthwhile thing to do considering how long the protection will last. With regular washing and occasional waxing to top up the existing protection it'll look like that for years to come.
On the other hand, the spoof is SUPERB. Especially the cat testing stage!

The astra washing is the saddest thing i've ever seen. At the end of the day if he sells it in 3 years time its still gonna be worth exactly the same as any other astra vxr. It won't look like that for years to come, because I know exactly where the stonechips will be. Front edge of bonnet, front bumper, and front edge of the rear arches.

lol that was good...i can't really see why the bloke is getting so much stick though, on one forum it had people saying he was gay, and uses polish as lube...real childish stuff. So you didn't notice that the parka parody is basically saying the same thing? I don't think it's very funny either. Just me then...

I see two sides, I think some of what was written (in the spoof was funny) but the ammount of work he has done to take the mick out of someone online does suggest he has far too much time on his hands.
I didn't read too much of the spoof in all honestly. but I think it's a bit sad grown men making gay jokes.
also, I think the astra looked fantastic at the end of all the work

Yeah maybe, but having given my MR2 an half assd wash, cif'd off mucky finger prints, jet spraying and blackening the black bits, it mad a difference even to me.
and maybe the astra will be ok in years to come due to polish/wax protection? uv barrier? scratch protection?

Doubt it. the wax will all be washed off in a coulpe of months tops, so unless he keeps doing that level of waxing it will look like any other Astra in 3-4 months time LOL Now here's one on the business of how a good photo makes a difference... Note that the guy in the following link has basically given the car a wash with a pressure washer with commercial valleter's products, then he dryed it, and waxed it with Autoglym and then again with Meguiars NXT. No "measuring the depth of the paint with a special magic tool" or snakoil waxes or other things... www.talkaudio.co.uk/vbb/showthread.php?t=209542Or does the Astra look thousands of times better than that does? Hmmmm....

Hmmmm.... as the saying goes from a truly great book and film: "you can't polish a turd" everytime I see an astra now, i start to laugh, imagine going to buy that car in a few years time, and he bores the sh1t out of you about how he had it detailed, you'd just be going, shut up, its an astra, gimme the keys, I'm gunna run it into the ground till it carves its own trench into the road down to hades itself. Everytime i mention the astra to one of my mates he gets really angry, and goes off on a swear fest, its brilliant, I'm gunna mention it again tonight i think, just for a giggle. here are the links for the wax: www.vertar.com/zymol/zymol-atlantique-glaze/oh looky, £1,116 and this one DOESN'T get re-filled for life, thats all you get. oh roffles! small tub aswell think its 8oz or 230ish grams, not alot anyways, I'm sure gold cant be much more expensive. lol. www.vertar.com/zymol/zymol-royale-glaze/and the infamous, free refils though, lets all buy it and then get it refilled 500 times in a week.

As far as I care the original poster put a big long detailed post up on the net for all to see and has to take the rough with the smooth.
As the Akku man says this detailing thing has got a little out of hand on a lot of forums and sadly, like a lot of things on internet forums, you actually see people boasting about doing stuff wrong. There's giving helpful advice and there's preaching. The people to really talk to are the concours boys who many of which are still using Mer, Autoglym and Turtle Wax - because they care about having a clean car and not just defending their chosen brand on the Internet.
That Swift is a great example.

My sis and her BF met 'Mer man' on holiday, so we have stocks ;D just need summat to polish now, maybe that china blue.... I was intregued by the foam bath bit. seems a good idea. whats best to do initial wash with? I end up with tripple wax (from shop or cupboard) but seems silly to apply 'wax' while ya cleaning, what do cleaners here recommend for that real world clean?

what do cleaners here recommend for that real world clean? Just stick with the bigger brands and I doubt you can go wrong with shampoo. The more expensive ones like Autoglym and Megs claim to be wax safe and leave less suds on the car. Autoglym also claim theirs lines you drainage channels with a protective film. I'm using Megs NXT at the moment which smells of fruit so insects come land on your car while you're buffing it.

I use the Megs NXT wash. Its about the only thing out of their range I really found worth getting excited about. The clay bar was good too, but again, almost anybody's clay will do.
With the Megs NXT wash - make sure you use it sparingly! Too much and it will go really streaky.
I never found Mer much good. I have to say Mer glass cleaner is the best and easierst I have every used but am bvggered if I can find it anywhere now. Their wax-polish I found was not so good. It "cleans" well, but it doesn't protect, doesn't bead up the water properly.
I am also VERY suspicious of anyone claiming you can wax a dirty car with their prouct (where the diclaimer "waxing a dirty car will result in severe paintwork damage, although the car will actually be waxed...)
I am using a random selection of prioducts almost on the Mazda - 3M, Meguairs, Turtlewax, Autoglym and the gloss is good. (basically what ever comes to hand out of the garage "stash"!)
"The people to really talk to are the concours boys who many of which are still using Mer, Autoglym and Turtle Wax - because they care about having a clean car and not just defending their chosen brand on the Internet." well said that man.
