Due to my current medical condition I am contemplating buying a mobility scooter so I can get around car shows etc without my good lady trying to tip me out of my wheelchair like she did several times last week at Ryhope pumping station. I don't recall seeing any modded ones on here so if you guys have any ideas then let me know. First problem of course is getting one to suit my needs. 19st, needs to be sturdy but light enough for my good lady to lift into the car. My initial thoughts were rattle can black satin and using the pinstripe kit I got off Santa..

You can get mini hiab arms for cars/people carriers to lift these scooters, could it be worth looking into? My scooter is 150 kg and non of the boot cranes I've seen for sale on eBay are capable of lifting that weight. I used to have a van and had folding alloy ramps (still got them) but a bit of a PIA to load and unload as you need around 3-4m of clearance as most disabled parking bays are such that you'd end up blocking the road. Now I've got a small trailer and better option. I've also got a small folding scooter that fits even in the boot of my Smart Fortwo Waste of time however to outside - I use it mainly for hospital visits / DIY stores etc where it's flat and smooth. BTW I'm 18 stone and your weight makes a massive difference in performance of scooter so try one before buying. Mine was something like £3600 new but I got it off somebody I knew after it had been used once (by their mother who then discovered sight too poor for a scooter and terrified herself) then left in storage so batteries duff. Also if second hand unless guaranteed then assume you'll need new batteries and budget accordingly - £200-£300 for a pair of decent not excessive. I made the mistake of buying cheaper set (just over £150 the pair) and they are already showing signs of loosing capacity. Last thing you want is duff batteries. I found manufacturers spec that says range of, say, 25 miles is based on a flat surface with light person riding. Even with new batteries that were fully charged the max I've ever got was around 13 miles and by them they were completely flat so wouldn't move with me sitting. Paul h

Started building this some years ago, sadly the bits got sold off and it was never finished. Would've left Colin Furze in the dust! lol

Good dude you don't look nowhere near 19 stone, unless your 6 foot 7'' when upright Always wanted to chuck a moped engine in one of those (Well I lie a bit, a fireblade engine) but that would need major major mods, a 50 or so cc engine I guess would fit with a bit more braking beef

Thanks for the info. I am still relatively new to this mobility lark so any tips will be gratefully received.

I guess the biggest problem is the sheer size (or lack of size) of it as it restricts what you can do to it. One does not want to overdo the bling. I think I still have a spare gold plated coffin embelisher at home that could look good on it in a Chicano Low Rider kind of way. About 6 inches tall by max 4 wide. It has a heart with veins on it, some rose thorns and a very small cross. Let me know if you are interested and I will PM or email you a photo.

Beware of overloading the motor when using ie steep hills or uneven ground. I too weigh a bit (18 stone) and whilst using my scooter recently one of the spring loaded battery contacts got so hot it melted through its plastic housing and left me stranded
