look for rust. lots of it. even in good nick, pull the carpets back and look, they rot in awkward places that get overlooked. 520 carb will have the desparately unreliable and thirsty 4 barrel carb. however, a quick change to an e34 525i 12v engine would see 175 ponies and loadsa fun ;D all bolt in too. I'd have it over a vw, but then thats just me. imagine a dusky met. blue version low over a set of 16x8" pentas and four pot brakes on 'em are curse word unless new, remote servo's leak and are a pain to bleed proper. diffs are pretty damn indestrucable. 520 shoulkd have rear drums, so at least the handbrake will work, park on a hill with confidence.

I went to look at an old 520 once - it was green with a green interior and the old dear had been running to the post office in it once a week since about 1982. It was still f*cked though.

535i? expensive and non-existant engine electrics if they go wrong. convert it to motronic e32 if it went tits up. storming cars tho. close ratio dogleg 'box and LSD as standard IIRC. I'd have the 520i and 2.5 it myself, depends if you want a project. 535i already has great suspension, bags of power, reasonable brakes, alas a curse word poor handbrake. project or instant wow?

From what i can tell a 1978 should be a 6 pot yeah? Thirsty you say, it would be a daily so may be a prob. How thirsty are we talking? Ive heard conversions are easy, but that would be a long way of! If its in good nick and has 10 months MOT it shouldnt be too rusty (i hope) Its about 400 miles away so i'd be buying blind and driving home ;D

Good info there, the 1978 520 is not an i though. I guess the project or instant wow depends on the 520's final price. I think I'm going to do it, insurance allowing ;D

sorry 'bout the "i", just habit, I knew it was a carb, because I'd said earlier about the 4 barrel. they're ok when they work right. just highs of 18mpg when they don't. yes a '78 would be an m20 six pot, early 520i's had a 2002tii engine on k-jet, very rare. putting an e34 525i lump in is a weekends work. its the same engine! 7 wires for the efi, mounting the fuel pump and running a return line would be the hardest part. if you can afford it, the m535i is the one to get if you want to sell later/ not kick yourself if its cheap. its one of those once a lifetime cars. it'll be more costly to maintain tho. might have a conversion to a weber 38dgas floating around at work. is the 520 man or auto? manual would be much better.

Matt, i can pop over early if thats any good?
The 520 is manual. The 535i has come down to £2100 but its still a bit rich for me even though its well worth it!
I may have a punt on the 520 though, if it goes cheap enough.

It will never happen though. I'm determined to buy it but its too nice to mess with. It will get slammed, maybe rimmed and thats it.
Speaking of which, do they readily except some stick action, or do they put up a fight? Coils all round i asume?
Do you guys want to see it?
