I have heard about similarities times before, but the YB is a Pinto with Twink head isn't it? (not my field at all BTW!! ) is that the similar bit, same designer To me the Vaux lump was always just a GTE/calibra engine. never given enough credit I guess and they go pretty cheap don't they? .... Ford YB was a turbocharged 16v Pinto all developed by Cosworth after Ford saw their development Pinto 16v conversion. The GM XE/LET engine was co-developed by GM and Cosworth, Cosworth designing and building the heads (eventually these were produced by GM themselves) Beware what you read on the Vauxhall forums, major BS on there about the XE and LET development imo. The Cosworth name was in no way exclusive to Ford, they did a lot of engine development for many manufacturers.

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

Anyone read the book about Keith Duckworth + Cosworth?? Fantastic story. I like the bit where he's sat at his desk and someone gives him an Avenger BRM 16v cylinder head, he looks at it for a minute or two and shoves his fingers in the ports to check it out, then simply dismisses it as being pez compared to the Cosworth BDA head (turned out he was right).

Nice to see a carlton back-to-front dizzy cobbled onto there with a bit of ally plate! That ought to work pretty well when combined with the turdblowa. It looks like the factory manta bracketry way of dizzy mounting to me... So long as the toothed belt is at the right tension it should be ok though i'd reckon? `you shouldn't encounter too much resistance off a dizzy?

right enough, but a carlton dizzy is going to make a lousy job of sending the sparks at the right time. Specially with a turbo, the timing curve is going to be all over the shop. Surely he ought to have kept the standard distributorless set-up?

If you are building a fast road/track escort than I can understand using an na. XE/LET to power that, cause of the ease to find a good one and price of rebuilds plus the fact that conversion parts are already avaliable. But using an Turbo XE/LET to power a Sierra seems like a bit of a round the house way to do it? Surely the cost of putting an LET turbo in to a sierra would at the end of the day be similar to the cost of putting in a YB, plus the headache of fabricating engine mounts, exhaust etc? Still at the end of the day its going to be a fast Sierra and thats all that counts!!!!! You can get a 302 in a Sierra, I'd do that Anyway I agree with Alistairk, on this one 302 would be sweet........ now all I need is a written off mustang

Sierra - here we go again! He has an illness, it's not his fault.

I don't mind cross polination when it makes sence, eg mini with vtec or red top. but this boggles me a bit, I don't find it offensive or anything daft like that just seems odd not to pick a ford engine. cool motor tho Vtec or red top in a mini are a right non-sense conversion in my mind, they sit too far forward and cock up the handling and balance of an otherwise very good little car.. Whereas an LET into a rwd ford seems to make sense, especially as cosworth engines seem to go for silly money non sense conversion?? 160 bhp in a car which weights 700kgs, if thats non sense then ill take a large plate of non sense with a can of silly things to wash it down with. havent heard any of the people i know complaining about the handling with their v tec minis

Yes, but your peoples who lash thousands of hours and quids on VTEC conversions are hardly likely to shout proudly
'YES! I have finished it! It sucks major donkeys knob!! What a waste of chops!!!'
are they?

160 bhp in 700 kgs will make for a fast car. IF you can get the power down. Also, when most of that 700kgs is hanging fore of the front axles, it'll make it an understeery pig. Try driving a stock seat cupra with the stock 220 odd hp round a track. then try driving one with no back seats or interior, and 300 hp with a horse tied to the front bumper round the track... ** ** i havent actually tried this, but i reckon it'd illustrate my point quite nicely. Option A will be better
