Hey Tommy, You bought that van from one of my best mates!! I've told him about your thread so he should be online soon. I've had many enjoyable weekends spent in that van. really pleased to hear that it's still going and it's gonna get over 60mph one day soon. Good luck with it. Are you intending to keep the Urban cammo paint job?? It was painted on the hottest day since records began, flying ants were everywhere, theres probably a few still under the paint. He might be able to get you the paint codes if your interested. Result! His name Ed L by any chance? If so he left a t-shirt in the overhead compartment. Yeah, over the last year (feels like much longer) I've had a lot of fun with her (known simply as 'Van' amongst admirers) - pretty much reached a cult status with it as my tour bus! Afraid that though the paintjob really defines Van for me, the bodywork is being eaten alive, and if it's going to last through its next MOT, it needs a sand down and respray. Oh well, paintjobs aren't meant to last forever - only leaves more scope for the next one (it's not gonna be one colour alone though I can guarantee). Choice of block is almost certain to be a rough 3 litre out of an Isuzu.

Wow Tommy!! Thats my van!! My friend Mofri is wrong as usual. I sold it to some students about 18 months ago. I had it for about 4 years and I did indeed do the paint job and I retrimmed the interior (badly, as you say) The paint is Dulux atlantic surf if I remember rightly. I'm so pleased to see someone doing something with it. I always wanted to put a 2.5 5 cyl turbo deisel from a T4 into it, but a rover V8 sounds like much more fun, how about a chevy small block? Seriously though I reckon a 2.5 - 3.5 Deisel (diesel?) would be about right. Hopefully it might go a bit faster, I did get 70 out of him once but it was one of the scaryest things I've ever done! I took him (definatly a bloke!) down the 1/4 mile at bug jam once - I got a 24.5! It was doubly funny because I was up against a bug engined Fiat 500 that did it in 11 seconds - he just disappeared into the distance! I'd love to come and see the work in progress and I'd be very happy to answer any questions/ appologise for any bodges. The only problem is that I live in Mexico, I'll be back in July...

Nice to see another LT on here ;D If it was me (it might be yet : i'd go for a later 6 cylinder turbodiesel, but i'd buy the whole vehicle and just swap everything over. I've been looking into it (mines got a motorhome body on it and a 65hp Perkins diesel, so you think yours is slow!) and looking at the ETKA VW parts catalogue, the later engine covers are actually smaller (hense why you see 3-seater cabs in later versions but not the early ones) so you'd not need to change the engine cover and have planty of room underneath (as far as i can tell from the diagrams - might be different in real life). They are certainly not as high thats for sure. Plus you'd get a 5-speed box and power steering. Try www.vagcat.com More pics needed too!

There we go then - the students only had it for 6 months before I got it last May. If I'd known the previous winner would be reading the topic I wouldn't have been so harsh about the interior. It wasn't actually all that bad - and suited me fine for a fair while - but damp from underneath came up and rotted parts away. At one point a mate actually fell through one of the rear seat/cupboards. The nice lady I bought it from in North London told me at some point the guy before had lived in it for a couple of years, and converted it to his needs - you I suppose! I'll check and see what t-shirt it is tomorrow; found it amongst the hammock parts (as well as a printout of an email with directions to 'cumfybanana'). I'm using it to rub oil into the bare metal for the moment so I don't think you'll want it back. As I said before, I'm looking for a good bit of power (V8 plans are scrapped), so I'm investigating what exactly fits. There's so much space though I'm sure I wouldn't have much trouble with anything. I'm trying to source a 3.1l diesel turbo out of an Isuzu at the moment; but it would be nice to get hold of another dub lump just for consistency. Hopefully will get it back to bug jam at some point soon! VWDan, you mean one of the straight 6's out of a late 80s LT? I could do that, but this one's a labour of love, which is why I'm not just buying a slightly later diesel turbo LT instead. Since I'm going out of my way to keep him on the road, I might as well make him extra special. Gotta say 65hp pulling a whole bloody motorhome sounds gnarly! I'm also gonna investigate the 2 passenger seats option; but we'll see - that's all low priority for the moment. And thanks for the link, very helpful! Top priority is the shell, before he ends up looking like a rusty climbing frame.

Turns out t-shirt is plain black.. nothing interesting on it. Currently wrestling with the wheel nuts - rusted on almost completely. I've tried soaking in WD40, bought an enormous monkey wrench I've been jumping up and down on. Nothing works. Any tips folks?

Cummfy Banana eh? hmmm, I used to work there making cars that looked like sofas and beds and things. I think those directions are probably the ones for my interview there... funny how these things come around. Try some plusgas on the wheelnuts, and a longer breaker bar. Chances are I was the last one who did them up wich means they will have copper grease on them and they really should come undone... good luck.

When you say monkey wrench do you mean an adjustable spanner?? Umm, I'm not suprised it's not working, you need a socket and a nice, big breaker bar. Halfords ones are good because if you snap it by jumping on it with 3 people, they'll just give you another. No, I've never done that!

Haha, no, dunno why I said monkey wrench - was using my big chrome socket set. Thing is, I was applying pressure by pulling up - I didn't want to jump on it since I broke my (older) bar like that (I get most of my kit off ebay, and refunds are much harder that way since people instantly assume you're a scamming curse word). Eventually I gave in and just started hopping on it, and luckily no breakages. All wheels are off - things are looking good. One minor hiccup though - managed to knock it off an axle stand moving the digger out of the shed - the stand ripped through the bodywork and there was much swearing and gnashing of teeth. Luckily, the 4 inches it ripped through was crumbling rust anyway - so I'm very lucky. Lesson One: driving diggers into automobiles can prove damaging.

Some piccies after today: Removed the panels behind the front seats - already the internal space feels much larger. Been wanting to do that for ages. Doors off, trying to find as much as poss to put off the sanding. Very tedious. Interior stripped out - still trying to get the dashboard off, but I can't find the last screw or whatever it is holding it in place. Need to pull up vagcat for more info.
